hmm... i just completed a course in organizational behaviour and one of the topics was on online communications... where one of our senses (sight) cannot be used...

my thought went to the forum - how many of us have been influenced by the use of avatars? i mean, so many of us did not know each other before this place started...

e.g.

when dalady saw the penguin in song's avatar, she thought song was a girl for quite a while...

i had this high society impression of lilian when she was using the lady with the tatoo as her avatar... now, with her current avatar, she's so much warmer...

i dun even want to talk about sila's toadie avatar :D... now with her bubbly avatar, dalady commented that sila's a very friendly person...

and my 2 all-time favorites... alka's godfather avatar (seriousness and respect) and kochun's god of gambler's avatar... tabik!!!

to go back to the topic daboss brought up, i've been thinking about it. since this forum has been on, we make judgements and decide what people are like based on what they post. their avatars, if not their photos, become a tantalising hint at what they are, or sometimes a barrier to what they are. look at fulat - it's really hard to tell what he's like based on his avatar, and to judge a person just by what they post is a very lopsided way of forming an impression of someone you've never met. (sorry to pick on you, fulat - but you came to mind).

then you have the people that you know and love and have known and loved from ACS until now, and have kept in touch. when euj had his koala bear and dream with his crazy man avatar, and ray with his dog and his dragon et al, it did not affect my impression of them one way or another! because i knew them then, and i feel i still know them now and the avatars is just something i look at to know they posted something. so their avatars completely did not affect me (i'm sure it's the same for fulat's close friends, i'm sure his avatar is not something that affects their opinions of him at all).

but i think the avatar is especially important for the people we just met on the forum - when everyone was putting up their pics as avatars, it seemed i could then respond and chat with EVERYONE. and not be shy. and even daboss's dancing banana is so happy-go-lucky you know he must be nice and approachable.

so i guess in my long rambling way, i'm saying keep on posting the crazy avatars and do intersperse it with pictures of yourself (thanks janice!) :D even if for a short time.

it depends... there are some forummers that i find the avatars don't "match" the way they're presented through their posts... but at the end of the day, i do admit using avatar as a way to form a mental image of how the other person is, unless it's someone i know e.g. my yearmates....

The reflection could be the positive image the person is trying to potray, or even the opposite characteristics, or something one wishes to be/have but are not/do not have,... it could also be a fantasy. Whatever the choice is, it will be related to the owner's personality, whether it's the positive or the negative reflection.
