KoChun

If you turn the word 180 degrees, it reads as CHUN in mandarin, meaning Spring.

When we turn it upside down, it means 'Spring has arrived'. Also look like 2 hands receiving something (health, wealth, joy, happiness, career, friends and etc)

Sila
02-17-2005, 08:41 AM
aaaah very auspicious and meaningful! is the chun in kochun the same chun in spring?

So far, so good, Sila. A little bit busy just now.
my workday today was like yesterday, except with more swearing...yesterday i worked on all these documents proofreading, editing, whole day. then today this morning i discovered that my microsoft word apparently mogok yesterday. saved nothing. i had all the files listed but 0KB. call the helpdesk they couldn't help me, all files were Unrecoverable. ada ke, they ask me "are you sure you saved your work? did you say "Yes" to the Save prompt?" i wanted to KILL them!!!! of course i am not stupid enough to not save my work. it's saved - timestamp all correct but at 0KB. obviously there is something wrong with the damn application!! so today i had to redo all the work from yesterday, plus try to figure out what's wrong with my PC. tonight i just defragged this bugger... gah!

The thing about Lobsang Rampa was he discussed buddhism in his books... bloody misleading.

From my second year in Uni onwards, i stopped reading religious crapology books. If you cannot explain to me something scientifically (nevermind the empirical proof, just a decent theory will do), then i consider it as crap. That's how i realised Geomancy, astrology, divining, etc are all crapology!

Sila, Have you read the Demon Haunted World by Carl Sagan... on how our life is dominated by these pseudo-sciences?

dino, dream was into these books back in form 1-form 2. ahead of his time being philosophical and metaphysical.

i thought it was all bull - it's funny how i was prepared to believe there could be Clark Kent and Superman and aliens from outer space, and magic, but i couldn't buy into this kind of spiritual/foretelling sort of thing. sampai sekarang i'm like that lah - reading this book By The River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept and it's OK and a should be a fast read but having so much trouble getting through it. the cynical side of me keeps saying "WHAT???" and "Who would do that??" and "No bloody way!!" :o it's like a treatise on love and spirituality and i can see what a beautiful concept it is but you know what, i live in the real world. at the end of the day, bills are due and love is wonderful but it is give and take and not just all happy miracles! so i am having lots of trouble getting through this should be quick book.. :(

He wrote only one fiction, Contact, with his wife Ann Druyan. (Made into a movie, with Jodie Foster in it. As always, The book is way better than the movie).

Carl Sagan was a real scientist, as in an academic. Checkout http://www.planetary.org/html/society/tributes/ for more info. . This guy was a real overachiever. Pity he already dead.

I have almost every single book he wrote... my favourites are Demon Haunted World, Broca's Brain, Contact, Cosmos... but i particularly like Dragons of Eden. Brilliant!

Its his and his wife's theory on the evolution of human intelligence. You'll be interested to know why he called it dragons of eden though... something to do with serpents. But i think the snake and eden is a "lost-in-translation" issue from the bible, sagan was wrong there... probably.

I switched to non-fiction during uni days... we had a really good library in UTM. I even read the Apollo 13 flight report (in a book form of course). Non-fiction is really enlightening when presented by the proper writer. I'm even reading histroy textbooks now from my father's collection... If you're into history, stay away from this guy call Felipe Fernandez-Armesto. I bought 3 of his books, history presented solely from a western viewpoint, judged by technological achievements and progress. He totally misses the point.

I liked HG Wells books on history better... and he was scientist!

Hey Sila...how come you keep staying in hotel ah?? Company pay isit??
yah - they require me to travel to the client site so they pick up all my travel tab lah. i can get an apartment here and get them to pay for it but that would be too lonely lah. this way i have ppl downstairs who are nice to me, and i get Hilton points (the fast way to a free vacation my friend, is to collect airline points and hotel points). when i go on vacation all my airfare is free and all my hotel stays are free oso. very nice. went to hawaii twice like that, jamaica, and also key west (i think i paid for the ticket to key west since it was under USD200). but to go to malaysia on free ticket is very hard - must book over 1 year in advance. so i just pay the money to go home and keep collecting airline points for those trips oso lah! :D

heehee your dad is smart - that way your sis can get experience and learn how things are in the world independently - then can use all the experience at your dad's company! :D my relatives all thought i should have become a lawyer because i am so loyar buruk!! :D

that is the hardest part lah dino. after i get married maybe end of this year or something i am thinking of hanging up my traveling shoes. be a real married woman. go home at night like a normal person. but of course, the money aspect is very nice. not that they pay me a whole lot, but certainly for now more than what i could make at a "regular" job.

But the Ribena I bought was manufactured in Malaysia! My parents also, never allowed us sisters to drink anything other then water. Eating out, no drinking. Want to drink, go home and drink! As a result, till today, when I go out I don't drink anything other then the chilled tap water they (restauranteurs) offer. Habit liau.

no no not editor.. my main job is as a process modeler. but for my client now, i am writing user manuals with regards to the modeling tool we use, and helping to establish the standards that they will use as well as the templates in the tool. so have to edit/proofread the documents and make sure it's right, that the tool can do this, and that the templates match the user documentation. i have to finish this quick lah i hate it. aim to finish by end of tomorrow. then i can go back to my process modeling! :D

i promise if i wrote those user manuals they would be much more useful! ;) unfortunately with those bestbuy crap, i am in the same boat as you (that is, either on hold for hours to get their helpdesk, or taking the screwdriver and taking apart the damn thing to see if can fix it myself)

process modeling? u're an engineer then? I hate writing user manuals as well.
well i'm definitely not an engineer. i deal with the process side of things. i ask the very "simple" questions: that is, Why do you do this? What is the goal? (i.e., the goal is not to "enter data", but to "process order"). i create process models that directly helps the business to achieve their goals - how do you do something in order to achieve your desired business goal? is it the most efficient way? can we reengineer your processes to increase your productivity or lower cost, or both, or solve a bottleneck in your process? what are the pieces of data that get manipulated? then you can evaluate your application portfolio and consolidate/etc. that's kind of what i do. if your company does not have clearly outlined processes, then there can be much opportunities for improvement.

actually we are linking Processes to the Data models you system analysts do - that way you really know you are building something that the users will use and need to use, and that the business goal is met. a lot of the time, the business users donno how to tell IT what they need, and tell IT the wrong thing, then IT comes up with stuff according to the written requirements and it doesn't fulfill what the business users want! but not IT's fault - they are following specs. so what i do helps to join up the 2 sides :D

Sila

i actually love it - it's like a big giant jigsaw puzzle - fitting in all the pieces. if cannot see the picture, how to make changes, right? plus, the work then can double up as training material, and all that good stuff lah! :D

janicejoy

YOu must hold a REALLY important role, Sila. Respect man! What did you major in Uni?

Sila
02-22-2005, 12:35 PM
takde lah - i do it cause i like it. i'm good at spotting patterns and speaking my mind (sometimes to make a change you have to ask the simplest question: i.e, "um, so why DO you do it this way then?". often the answer is "because that's how we have always done it"). and must have muka tak malu because clients don't hire someone like me to make them feel stupid, but to guide them to come up with the right answers, and they feel they collaborated with you and because they have ownership of the answers, then they want to implement in properly instead of saying "this is some random solution brought in by some consulting company". kind of mental game there ;)

i actually did econs at uni - what i do now doesn't really have much to do with econs really. i sort of fell into this by accident when my mum told me after i graduated "get a real job or come back to malaysia and waste your time" :D it was october, i'd graduated in june, and was still working my part time job and hanging out with my friends... so i got a job lah..

janicejoy
02-22-2005, 12:40 PM
Did you start off doing that or were you undergoing some sort of training?

Sila
02-22-2005, 12:44 PM
my first job i worked as an "operations analyst" - mostly we wrote procedure manuals. after 1 year of that i switched jobs and in my new company i used the same skills (interviewing subject matter experts), learned the new modeling software, and started into process modeling. so no formal training. :D all on the job only...

janicejoy
02-22-2005, 12:46 PM
So you'd stick to this job for now and many years to come?

Sila
02-22-2005, 12:51 PM
well i dun think i'll stick with this forever even though i love it. because in this line of work, you go where the clients are. which means i travel almost every week. not really the kind of job i want when we're ready for kids, you know? since i started working, i worked 10 months in Richmond, Virginia, maybe about 2 years in Charlotte, North Carolina, 6 months in Hartford, connecticut, 3 months in chicago, 6 months in Buffalo, new york, and now going on 3 years in groton, connecticut. crazy lah. i've done short stints in San Fran, Phoenix and Denver. so i'm ready to hang up my traveling shoes. i might be able to trade my experience in with a job at a local company doing the same thing that i do now - but if not then i'm ok with that. this wasn't exactly my first love. i might think about goin gback to school or something...

janicejoy

I was thinking along the same line. Also thought it would be cool to have a DR in front of my name and when I was doing my masters i aimed to be one before i turn 26. Well, it's obviously too late now since I'll be turning 27 in October. Also, realized that I don't want to come back after work and realize that I have more work to do. Been studying for close to 7 years ...so enough is enough. Time to have a look at my career and see where I want to head to.

Sila
02-22-2005, 01:17 PM
i haven't even got a masters yet - but can do that in the phd program if i need to lah...unfortunately stuff i am interested in doing for the rest of my life probably cannot earn money ... so? now i go to work, make a bit of money, pay my mortgage lah. what to do? when time comes to change my lifestyle and work without getting on a plane, then i might switch it around and do something completely different. the good thing about this job is i work with ppl, so i'm fairly good at talking to ppl and conducting workshops, draft sessions that sort of thing. can use this skill to do other things (maybe anthropology? ethnomusicology? donnolah...) :o see how lah... or maybe i'll be lucky and there might be a local company willing to pay my rates to do what i know how to do and help them get their company in order... or not. we'll see lah...
