well, truth be told, i dun like teachers - period. they think just because students are 'kids', they (teachers) can do as they like... i know that there are some good teachers around (maybe even many of them)... but students need respect too...

most of the teachers i know... pui! pui!

sorry ah if i offend any of you who are teachers (just consider yourselves as one of the good ones that i mentioned...)

I believe lousy teachers give a lot of homework because they do not know how to educate young minds....thus...using huge amount of homework to justify their existance!! Just my opinion.....not meant to direct it at all teachers.

i believe good education system should encourage students to be involved in active interaction... it's not about lots of homeworks or not, it should be to instigate the students to be more creative and be more curious about their topics of learning...

Yup.....stimulate their young minds not bogged it down with hopeless amounts of homework.

that's right... piles of homework restrict the amount of exploration a student can do, especially in term of amount of time available... there should always be room and time to learn things of interest, not just doing homework in monotomous fashion...

although, to be the devil's advocate - until i did my undergrad, and became more specialized and therefore interested in the subjects i was taking, i just did homework because i had to. if i had to think creatively about things like physics, or geography in secondary school, and have "creative assignments" about these subjects that i absolutely don't give a sh*t about, then in many ways i would prefer to just have some assignment from the workbook that i needed to complete to pass the test. i guess it's a matter of interest?

i guess doesn't really answer the volume of homework question..

LiLiaN
02-12-2005, 05:16 AM
that is when teachers should work to encourage students to explore... i realise that will be very tough, especially considering the class size in schools in malaysia are kinda big... in ireland, most classes consist of about 20-25 students only...

Sila

i suppose then we need to find out what the parameters are so we can think through the opinions:

* How big the class size?
* Subject taught is mandatory or optional?
* How much homework is being assigned now, that parents are complaining?

i guess the last question is the most important to me. what is the volume that these kids are being assigned now, that is too much? you can't eliminate homework altogether - in a class of 50-60 students, without doing some extra work at home you can't really learn the subject.

if i were a teacher and didn't have to assign as much homework, i'd say yaaaahooooo! less grading to do, what. but if this means that the students are learning less, then maybe that's not the right approach?

i am not saying not to give homework at all... just need to consider that there are several classes every day and there need to be a reasonable combined amount of homework...

I think homework is a must but not if it takes up hours to do it. I recall having 9 subjects to take during SPM and dumb student like me end up copying homework anyway. :D
Also Kitykat...please respond in proper English...it hurts the brains reading your version of English... :o

it's all a balancing act, looks like! no easy answers. sorry kittykat. but on another note, i cried pretty hard at the end of Mr. Holland's Opus! maybe you need to watch it like dino said, get encouraged and think outside the box!

i also found having lots of homework during SPM (10 subjects!) really discouraging, somehow only managed to barely ploughed through them... really admire most of my classmates then who even attended a good few tuition classes and still managed to finish every homework given... maybe i was just lazy...

Start sending my eldest to school when she was 3 y/o. Was looking forward to homework but her teacher doesn't encourage that as they doesn't want to pressurized the kids which I think it was wrong. Kids learn fast and they will be able to adapt to them. By year end, she still can't write but can read pretty well. She is able to read "Peter and Jane - book 2A". By 4 y/o, the teacher started to give ABC writing and still no homework. I have tried to give her some exercises myself but she refused to practice them. She only listen to her teacher. She even make me write the doted lines all over the 36 squares cos she's too lazy to write them.

By 5 y/o (which is this year)... ah... relieved. I am starting to feel the parenting role in helping to coach my daughter in her school work and she doesn't even complain much about her work. What is that few lines of ABC to write? Sap, sap, soi only la. Within few minutes she is able to finished them. At least, she get to feel the head start of "school & homework". This is part of schooling life. Better to start them young than late.

I even started sending her to Arithmetric tuition which she is looking forward to it every week. One thing that i've treasured is sitting down with her while she's doing her homework and chatting with her about school, teachers and her friends. I can feel the bond thru homework which i wish her teacher would give her more homework.
