As encouraged by Kochun and co. i've started this thread. So, do feel free to post The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly (Anybody remeber this piece?..) memories of the times in our school band. Posting here is NOT limited to ex-band members only; everyone can post and comment. Some simple rules of posting.
If u are and ex-band member, please state
1) Period of membership (year join - year grad/leave)
2) Highest Rank acheived (e.g. Recruit, Private, Lans-C., etc.)
3) Office ( e.g. Drum major, band leader, sgt-at-arms, seceratary, marching director... etc.)
4) Instrument(s)
For non-members, do feel free to post abt ur opinions, or anyone u admired from the school band, or abt Mr. ACS (a.k.a Drum Major)... etc.
As a non-band-member...i always envy the members that can cabut from Add.Math class to go to funeral!!! :D

I'm a band member...the most ciplak you can find...Never really learned to play anything although I took up the clarinet...so all I do is pretend to play the instrument as I march...but nvm, I still get the the same amount of ang pau...:D

Basket, so many non-bandmember here. Must come in to support dt a little lah.
As an ex-bandmember, I truly enjoyed the years of gruelling, fun, practices and band camps in Teluk Sekadih (Pangkor). To answer dt's questions,
1. 1989-1992
2. Corporal
3. Treasurer
4. Trumpet
I added another point.
5. Most memorable moment/achievement
Performing for the official Opening Ceremony of Sea Games in Lumut, 1989.
Note: Dino preferred to go for funeral rather than attneding Add.Maths class!!!

Forgot to mention. Band camps at Teluk sekadir was damn bloody great. Too bad chicks not allowed.
Year 1994 was a memorable year. Became band champion for merdeka parade. 1995 became the official royal band performing at the grand stand. *Clap clap*

Simply tembak nia. It's Hwa Liek and Wai Huat (cornet). We have Heng Hui (horn) and many more. Tony (trumpet), Jeffrey (flute), Li Ling and Siew Ling (both sax), Peter (drum and asst drum major), Sea Hing (drum and drum major later), and a few more. Sorry, I can't remember all of them. I remember euj was in the bad too, but unable to recall what instrument he used to play. Sila (clarinet) was in the band too.
Do I miss out any?

Actually when I look back now, I've no idea what possessed me to join the band. Tried the flute..after blowing awhile, start to pening-pening lalat...
Haha...and I was taken out of the field during a performance on the sports day once because I was going to faint...the green field suddenly looked like computer screen. All because of one old man who gave a super long speech under the shade while the rest of us were all standing under the hot noon sun...So inconsiderate!

hi folks! got to the bus station way too early.. so kena wait for my bus, i found my way to a cafe and here goes my stuff...
1) 1995-1998 (my mr. Ling put 1994 for me in the cert. i told him the mistake.. he said he did it on purpose :D )
2) Corporal 1998 ( but in my cert.. Mr. L put Sgt Major wor... :D )
3) Instrument Q.Master Asst. Clarinet sect leader (But Mr. L put Band Advisor in the cert coz i was Guru Sandaran after Form 6 :D )
4) Clarinet
one of the first lesson i learnt in the band was Acting/Pretending to play/ "Ciplak". becoz the moment u can march, those seniors will put in on formation. And mr. L alwyas encourages the newbies to "ciplak". So, Kochun n Dalady, ur actions ar to a certain extend legal.
As for keepig fit, hey, onli the guys turned uo the "ample" ones la e.g. Ming Jye(Tuba), Eddy & Tai Keng (Percussion). the gals i thnk still okay wor... Irene, Chin Yin & Yoke Li (Clr), Caroline (Sax), Hera (flute), (Clr).. okay la.. i nothing to compare with the other glas.. that i admit... i think without the marching n all the funerals, i'll be more extra...
I continued in uni. Continued playing clarinet while at the same time learning oboe. Was principle oboeist with BSUM (Band Simfoni UM), then UMSO (UM Symph Orchestra) & UMWO (UM Wind Orch), finally MUSO (Malaysian Universities Symph Orch). Also performed flute on ocassions. But i stopped last semester. I was unofficially the human resource manager for UMSO. Recruited a couple of ex-acs bandmembers to help out with our concerts on certain occasions...

2. always skipped promotion test so i think i was always a private. :)
3. no position
4. euphonium. it's like a smaller tuba.
5. getting paid RM5 to play at a funeral.
Do I miss out any?
wah, ah chai! how come you can remember until so detailed. so impressive. i can't remember anything except that peter was on drums and khay sern played euphonium with me - well not with me, but he also played euphonium. :) were you in the band?

i was in the band in form 4 - 5... didn't have what it takes to be a scout so i took the easy eay out to join the band - played the tuba... nearly got hernia during funerals... :D
but those were 2 good years - earn money during funerals... lotsa barbeques, parties, etc...
Was in the band too...
Forgot my rank but played the bass drum and rotor drums...
Most memorable was the SEA Games opening in Lumut and the Ipoh City Inauguration...:D

What instrument are you playing back then, Ausman?
Oh I started with something.... I think is trumpet... then didn't make the cut... later move to precussion ended as CYMBALS....and sometimes Tenor Drum.
Most memorable moments was to get angpow at funerals and BBQ.

yeah, it was quite a sight... imagine daboss hugging that huge instrument and huffing and puffing into it.
and he was also slightly smaller size then, although fitter... all the girls in school were swooning over him... ;)

Oh, I didnt realised there's this thread.
Anyway, my contribution:
Year: 1991 to 1995
Section: Baritone (in 1991 for 6mnths), Sidedrum/Percussion (1991-1995)
Highest Rank: Forgotten liao, I think it is Corporal
Post held: Percussion Section Leader (1994/1995)
Advantages: To be able to train and to be trained in the art of marching, perform in concerts, on-field marching, occasional funeral marches, performing live on national TV during Ipoh Merdeka celebrations, musical extravaganza, improved one's time management (as I was also actively involved in badminton for school), band camps at Teluk Batik, etc
Disadvantages: less time to study, more tired at the end of practices, will miss those nice shows on TVs, etc
Just like GarLoon, 1994 was the most memorable year because we got the Best Band award during Merdeka Celebration. Then 1995 Merdeka as the royal band performing at grand stand and at Sultan's residence.

Yah yah, I remember. There is also one morning while we were packing up to go back and it was raining and there's much wind. And we saw a huge water tornado from afar. We were also trapped because of the high tide and much water from the small stream that made it much difficult to cross over, and I think someone lost their slippers because of the strong current flowing out into the Batik...hahah...those were the days...

hmm.. seems like many ex-members had drop by. i think there r lots more but still belum contribute yet.
to comment on those who througout their band career changed instruments a couple of times, let me quote from my uni lecturer...
" ...you move ppl around to find the best match of instruments, however when that fail (read.. buta nota muzik), you give them two sticks and send them to the kitchen banging pots and pans (percussionist).. and when everything fails.... you take one of their sticks away... and put them right at the front.. either as the CONDUCTOR or the DRUM MAJOR..." :D
that kinda of solve the mystery as to why most Mr. ACS were percusionists ehh... :D

ACS (a.k.a Drum Major)... etc.
Ok just got to read this thread today.
I'm an ex-band member for 2 1/2 years only
1) Membership from Form1-Form3 (1991-1993 first half)
2)Highest rank i think was a Private
3)Drop out sudah mana ada office. jambang adalah.
4) first year play trombone then later ask for change and got cymbals but later change to trumpet instead.
Reasons for joining band of course: (1) Girls- especially the special someone, (2) Girls, (3) Girls. :D
Reasons for playing for funerals: (1) Girls, (2) Ang pow money, (3) Chrysantemum tea in packet after the hot march.
Reasons for drop out : alasan study for Form 3 mid-year exam konon but actually lazy to go band practice. zzzzzzzzz at home. After the exam, go for the practice again but sudah berkarat because all the while was a 'ciplak' band member who only know how to play first few lines of any songs and then lost count. Decided to drop out terus cause cannot cope at all. Forever poor timing and can't read taugeh well. How to go for promotion test. Till now try guitar still poor timing and can't read taugeh well.
Memorable event : Merdeka day parades in ipoh. There's one year i think they make a mistake on the winner band and 1st runner up if i'm not wrong. Darn.... how could they anounce wrongly. ACS Band Extravaganza, Sports day event and all the band camps and outing are memorable and fun. Thanks to Mr. Ling and all the seniors who take care of us.
Most admired Drum Major : Of coz my brother Tang Yu Hoe lor.
Most admired girl in the band: Can't reveal to u lar. I know u know can liao lar. Shh...Don't tell k.

i think one of the top reasons boys join band is becoz of the gals... it's a tradition, i think.
as for cannot keep time, our lecturer conductor in uni always say this, "difficult to count... pakai calculator!"
haha yeah yeah..... i'm TYS (True Young Single).
Tak boleh meh.... no rules says cannot pilih own bro as Mr. ACS mah. Somemore he also top student in his Fifth Form mah... of coz i salute him lar. Some more this year got ang pow from him. hehehe.. But ur english too chim lar. tak faham apa is nepostism. you speak english make me tau hing hing lar. i only know how to speak bahasa rojak and bahasa pasar lar. can explain wat's that ar.

hmmm i dunno the cantonese phrase, but i'm thinking this has nothing to do with band, but more to do with jlove's "reasons" for joining the band.. :D

having a digital/analog metronome and having a live-n-kicking metronome (conductor) is the same ..if u can figure out the timing-notes division in the first place... so, calculator or even abascus is a good alternative..

my uni lecturer cum conductor is crazy about jazz music. His composition n arrangements are full of syncopation. he loves to give us crazy off-beats and half or quarter beats... so, in order to subdivide the main beats into smaller division, he always say, "susah mau kira, use calculator!" :p

yay!!! this has been revived!
haha okay for me
1) Band member from 1997-2003
2) Highest Rank Sgt Maj
3) Positions : Trombone SL, Conductor, DM
4) Instrument : Trumpet, then later on trombone for a while, drums for a while (when the asst dm took over) most of the time playing with some stick or other :p
5) Memorable events : Getting 3rd place in state band competition in 2000..Previous years, we din qualify, so we were quite the underdogs...i think i screwed it up cause going into the competition we were actualyl ranked 2nd behind Nan hwa. But it was wonderful to suddenly scare the sh*t out of all the other bands. Subsequently that year we had band camp in kem biro tatanegara in kuala kangsar...one of the years where we had the most outing
Other fun things were trips to ipoh with mr ling to watch the other school concerts..
some interesting facts
ang pow during my time was standardized to rm10. payment to band was rm1k
band camp was held at teluk batik (one night affair) until 2003 i think..which was shifted to genting..after that i'm not sure
The band is schedule to have a concert beginning of next year 2007 to raise funds for new uniforms....perhaps us oldies can form an alumni band and show them how it's done? hehehe
Hmm since the time i joined the band, the uniform changed about 4 times i believe with the latest incarnation being the white blue outfit that chris c posted in another thread

who's hera? i remember for sarah's year there were lotsa chun babes in the band...hahahaha but no lar i din join band because of girls (how silly of me) but instead got challenged by my mom..
was a scouts troop leader back in primary school but brother was a band member..s.o when it came to acs i wanted the best of both worlds....haha but of course can't la....i remember always being impresed during extravaganza when i was a kid..anyway when i asked my mom..she said..if want easy life join scouts (since i alreadyt have the background) if want hard life join band...so i took up the challenge lor..haha and never did regret it :p
oh i was given the title Centennial Drum Major.....tho not sure wat's the scope of that. During the centennial year, i organised the ACS Concert which i'm told now has become Nostalgia ACS...that was one great night...and one remarkable feat that until today i feel is quite miraculous...was any of our alumnis at the concert?

hmm
good question
to answer that..theres basically two reasons i feel
1) they dont like the previous uniform
2) evolving with recent trends
in terms of trends there's a certain mvement for the uniform...now the bands are immitating uniform designs used in american drum corps or dci which essentially is a two piece thing, a top which doesn't reach the waist and a jumpsuit like pants.
as for not liking the previous design :p well, the former uniform was beige and during tze ming's year it was changed to some cocktail suit like thing with cumbabands and a bow tie...my comm din like it so we refashioned the uniform back to look like the beige one which was a jacket like look and brought back the tie..later on we changed to the red outfit to go with the times
i think curent committe doesn't like the white uniform that u just posted..that was changed about 2 years ago...change from red to white but no other change in terms of design.
as for the money...generally members pay but certain members get subsidised like outgoing committee members cause it's not fair to ask them to buy the uniform fo ronly a year...also the band does subsidise the unfirom cost..during my time, members paid rm 50 for the top although it costs us rm 30 so if u calculate based on 80 members, that's quite a large amount

time for the older brother to speak
1) Band member from 1993-1995 (went on to the SJI Military Band in Singapore!)
2) Highest Rank : Pencuci Tandas (always almost fail the test coz I am not a morning person)
3) Positions : erm, 1st Trumpet - can play until high high C lehhhh
4) Instrument : Zenith Trumpet, Jupiter Trumpet with the swinging valve, and finally inherited Samuel Tan's T10 Jupiter press valve trumpet
5) Memorable events : Playing Ketahanan Rakyat (which sounded like an inverse of Colonel's Bogey march) in Ipoh as a warmup piece. James Ling who was the DM at that time threw the mace at the highest note of the introduction and almost killed the entire band + himself when it hit the power line... we won that year... and played in the grandstand the next year while laughing at the way the commandos did their drills
Hmm - during my time, almost all gals sported minis leh - just like Nan Hwa (I think until today ah, NEVER CHANGE their black n white colour scheme at all after 20+ years mannnn!!!)
i remember the PGS girls and the Ave Maria girls.. *drooool*.. AND THE Ave Maria drum major with the tight yellow pants *nosebleed*
the trumpet section was always too loud and had to stand at the back of the band, so our cheekopek senior who was a sargeant always gave the "ke belakang pusing" command for us to enjoy the view of PGS and Ave Maria girls

This comes to prove that we have HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES RITE?? Well, lemme see.....I think that the beige colour scheme that we have and the buttons on two sides of our tops lasted from 1985 till 1995 it seems (just that in the early 90s girls all pakai long pants instead of minis lerr :D

After the beige uniform was the jacket type uniform..that was in use until 1997 if i'm not mistaken..when i was in form 1...that was quite smart
among some of the other alterations we did to the uniform was removing the stripes on the pants...that was i think in 1999 or 2000.....haha..becuase the stripes only served to look good if the band is marching in unison..which is seldom the case then. so at least if all no stripes, who salah hentak you wont be able to tell :p
as for band tshirt, when i joined the band the tshirt was the one designed by low tze liang.....was used until around 2003 liddat when the new round neck tshirt was brought in to fit with the current uniform. different from the past, where we wore school shirt under the uniform, now we wore tshirts
since then, i think there was new band tshirts every year that i've lost count..everytime i go back i can't identify the bandtshirts at all..haha
oh there was also a special edition black colour tshirt ...for my committee members only..hehe

some do wear skirts (not mini skirts)... and actually I have one senior that was commonly called "free show"... no points for guessing why....
the funniest thing is when we practise in the school hall, mr hong would be at the hall in front of the stage walking about.... and only after the entire practise, he'd come on the stage and say "you girls should make sure that you sit properly"... again, no points for guessing what he was doing walking around the front of the stage
