Balik kampung. In-law in the typical type of person. Must go back. They are in pontian, johore. 3rd day cny travelling to s'wan. My mom always grumble as she don't have any sons. Something that she don't look forward during CNY. Have tried to negotiate with hubby that we go alternate year so that we get to spend time with my mom during the eve and 1st day. but susah la. His old man later sour face with me. :(

But i suppose....its to create the spirit of CNY for people.

Hmmm...since when you have this feeling? Since you are married or way before that?

Have you ever wonder what it means? As for me, it's really symbolic. Giving as in giving 'ang pow' iregardless of the amount really mean something. It does bring 'joy' to the kids, reminding ourselves of being in a rich culture of give and take (ada pergi ada balik - direct translation), symbol of blessing one another (Chinese believe red means good luck - true or not it doesn't matter, at least you show that you do concern about their well being), symbol of prosperity and passing down of generations (that's is why elders gave red packets to their juniors)....and many more.

As for wearing new clothing...what's wrong with that? It's another symbol of a NEW BEGINNING at every NEW YEAR...with new hope, aspirations and etc.

Traditions don't just exist for nothing. They are our teacher. It must go on. Call me OLD Traditional China Apek but remember where you come from when you are successful.
