Toll...hmmm...a never ending story and issue. I think at this point of time it is not realistic to ask the government to abolish the toll which only profiting a small number of ppl (ie the toll concessioners majority shareholders) and not the ordinary street pp like us. What we should now look into is to ensure that every sens we pay to them, the services render to us must be on par. We should demand for a better services not showdy services... It is my hope oso to see the government spends more to develop the public transportation that to see more highways and roads been built. To me, building highways/roads is only a short term solution to a long term problem. We hear now and then, the road been widen and bulit to ease congestions and by the time the road is ready for traffics, the number of vechiles on the road has increased substantially. What do you guys think and have to say abt this? Hencefore...vote for me, to see these changes...:D
Prime Minister position up for grabs. I wonder who wants it?
But it comes with one condition...in order to keep it..must post picture of yourself that looked like PM for 1 week minimum!! :D

i think their claim of making loss every year does not justify they should increase the toll. number of vehicles on the road are also on the rise. if they make losses, their problem lar. how can they make the public pay for their own mismanagement.

By the way, wat's the reason for the increase in the toll? i wasn't following the news closely... wat, the coy has been incurring substantial losses? from wat? the 'upgrading' of highway facilities? we're paying for the damages caused by the landslides? rentals for which they were unable to collect from vacant shops along the highway?
u can ask semi value to consider building another highway? or upgrade/ restore the trunk roads....hahah more competitive, price should adjust downwards... i'm cranky already, slept at 3 and have to work on sat, maybe tt's why...

Cheh, see what u've got first ma... like LT, i dun have to do everything by myself wat... if i'm offered the post, I can always use my ma chai wat... this is wat i can do... firstly, trust me, i may not like all these, BUT i have the ppl's interests at heart. I plan to hire a team of full time researchers, surveying on the latest craze and taste, getting the most updated movies from all over the world, deliverin to the public the most updated h*ardcore stuff on a weekly basis....and at the same time airing all the classics... not enough? i'm thinking of setting a motto for all ladies, "if you have it, flaunt it!" Closer to home, Pamela and her fren yasmine bleeth (she mentioned she starred in Baywatch) had kindly agreed to help 'launch' it, they believe tt will get the temperature rising. TT's how i got this idea bt a beach foam party at the official opening ceremony. and keeping in mind tt we should make it as transparent as possible, our theme will be 'BARE FOR ALL TO SEE'. Also, Paul van dick will return my favour by spinning at the party.
This is just a brief of wat i'm gonna submit as a proposal for erotic planning... making u guys h*rny enough??

i agree that it is a dangerous item that can be abused. why banned it completely? we can always classify it under controlled items. sell it only through proper channels and keep it away from underaged childrens. take all necessary precautions but not to the extend of banning it completely. by banning, it does not resolve issues of illegally purchased fireworks.

Ya, I think this is a good idea. However, there are things need to be done before it can be made controlled item. For one example, Cigarrate, it was meant to be sold to those above 18 but at the end of the day, we are talking abt unscrupulous businessman , the lackadaisical enforcement agencies.... we see students, kids under 18 buying it. Unless these things have been tackle, I dun see we firecrackers can be allowed as controlled item. My two cents worth....hehehhe

Today's issue : Government department frontliners undergo courtesy courses. What you guys think abt this. Basically, I am no no for the government staff regardlessly whether they are frontliners or the backliners..NO BREAKFAST after 8.00 am. Take your breakfast BEFORE 8.00 am and NO TEA BREAK in between. How long will you think they will last? How long they are going to sustain that courtesy? What role can the public play? (No prize for the correct guesses) And most important...which company get the contract?

I think alot will depend on the department heads... bad staff performance will not reflect well on the dept heads. The surprise checks by the heads is a pretty good move, let them have a taste of their own medicine. But then again, it may all be words only, no action...

The sad truth is that it has been a norm for a long time and to change something as difficult as work culture, it takes a lot of courage, good leadership, dedication and time. Agree with Wai Yeng that in order to have a major change, usually the leader has to change. In most private companies, they don't even bother trying to change the leader cause it is near impossible. What they do is just get a new leader.
Coming back to the role of the public, we cannot do much if our complaints cannot reach to the proper channel and I am sure there are plenty of them already. Most of the time the complaints mysteriously vanish into thin air. Setting up a committee to take such complaints seriously will definitely have a positive effect. This committe should be as independent as possible to avoid favouritism. Something similar to corporate audit committees.

Errrr....very interesting but.....i think the problem is that management sets the example. If your boss keep going for tea break of course laaa you also assume that role of tea-breaking. No matter what it is.....the best solution to this problem is top down instead of bottom up!

i agreed. the top management have to change 1st before the lower management. majority the lower management will tend to follow what higher management ppl do. if the higher management ppl is kind and helpful, surely the lower ppl will follow their culture and the way they do.
in the end, if need lower management to change, then the top management should support them all the way... not critisize and simple set this rule n that...

again it voice down to the company culture e.g. Americans vs Japanese. Americans are more laid back and work in a more organic manner and the Japanese as you all know are like robots.
i disagree with the fact that the boss is consider a lousy boss if he does not allow people to makan or chat after the specific hour. at the end, we are paid to do what they want us to do. and of course if the rules are already being set, as an employee we should follow. communication and proper implementation of code of ethics could solve some of these problems..

:D hehehe. for me consider a unconsiderate boss coz only my department is kena while the rest of the department, they allow to eat their food and etc, as long they finish their work. my unconsiderate ex-boss want to be action and 1st person to set the rule so that the higher management ppl know about it...
at the end, even my MD and CEO dislike him coz he's NATO and simply promised people. :D

I think generally everyone think that the changes should starts from the top to bottom. I remembered many years ago, in a seminar, one young malay guy can up and say..."Sekiranya kepala gerabak keretapi tida bergerak, bagaimana gerabak di belakangnya bergerak. Sekiranya gerabak belakang berkeras untuk bergerak, maka akan jadi malapetaka" (I think no need translation lar). Then I remembered, two years ago, one of my friend said : "The damn bladi boss won't do anything to change. They are in that comfort zone for too long. If i were them in this position, I dun think i will ever make any changes that not benefiting me" Here we see resistance from the top and how do we overcome that resistance.
GL also pointed up that many complaints went vanish, which i agree very much. Where is the transparency we are talking? To my opinion, you need a revolution ( i know the word is hard) to change the whole system.

hmmm... interesting to note the American VS Japanese way. Maybe we can discuss this issue further. I tend to agree with you that the fact that boss should not be considered lousy if he does not allow ppl to makan or chat. Here we see resistance on the ground when the boss tried to implement such move.

if u get RM20K salary and then there is a restructuring going on, i dun think u want to do it IF the new position didnt benefit u much or added more task on ur job description.
2ndly, age also does matter. if u r in the comfort zone and going to retire, i dun think they want to move or support the new idea of the young one.. :D

Yup, I guess it does not confine to the boss but oso certain old guard which refuse to move from their comfort zone or worst they arel ready to pound the new staff and impose "join us or against us" situation. Here again how are we going to change the whole work culture? I guess if you put in everything aspect you say in my own shoe, I will do the same lar. You need courage to do so.

for any company/government to move forward, it is important not to remain status quo. how can we progress if we do not change for the better. if we do things as the way we did 10 years ago just because we are comfortable whereas our competitions are always moving ahead, where will we be for the next 10 years. 20 years behind them??? maybe even more. it is all in the mindset and to change that will be the biggest challenge.

You know what's said about Malaysia nowadays? It's a dangerous place. News of road crimes / rape / murder are reported in foreign newspapers. Some guy from the Police Force in Malaysia, father of an acquintance, while on a recent trip to the US to visit his son told stories of all sorts of crimes taking place in Malaysia, reported and unreported in the news. Now another acquintance who was at this 'story telling' session forbids his gf (my fren) to drive to KL for fear tt she'll get kidnapped, raped or murdered. Then, the expat from IBM who was killed in her hotel room in KL was / still is a client of my employer's. The MPV belonging to a colleague of mine was stolen during his trip to Malaysia last year.
Now i'm wondering... has Malaysia really turned that notorious, or has it been this way but the crimes went unreported?

you know currently we are going through a massive crackdown on illegal immigrants. my worry is that most of this illegal immigrants have gone into hiding in the jungles and plantations. most probably, many will not be able to be caught. for now, they may have prepared some food and money for this escapade but how long can they last in the jungle. in the end, they will be very desperate and the only option is to steal. eventually, the people of malaysia will be at lost if the situation is not controlled properly. anyone has other thoughts on this?

m'sia attitute is tak apa situation. as long the situation havent gone worst yet, they wont take action. "G" only take action when the case is already happen.
for e.g. canny ong issue. straight away take action and become front page almost everyday last time. this time i must praise the "G" but to extend how long. what i think is, they take action when they like it... some case they take it so seriously, some not. izit fair to other victim? i dun think so...

AGREE again.
I am particularly interested with the attention given by the media towards Canny Ong case. What if let say the same thing happen to a woman estate worker somewhere in the plantation. Will the press give the same highlight? Is LT trying to say that the G take quick action because of the highlight? Is that true?

from what i observed, i mean me only... if something is highlight in the newspaper, then only "G" will take action. for e.g. the letters column where the reader send in the complain about certain issue, then on following day and so, i can see some of the head of the department in "G" will respond to it and get it fix ASAP.
press does have influence to make the "G" to take action unless the "G" *ahem*...

well for every 1 case reported, 10 cases goes unreported. same everywhere in the world. :)
I have an American friend(he works as financial advisor for some Wall Street consulting firm) who did business dealings with Malaysian companies and he said, he hates to deal with Malaysian companies because he cannot compete without putting some money under the table to certain authorities(he says this people expects to be bribed). His problem with this is that if the US govt someway finds out that a US company bribes to gain advantage over competitors, the responsible party will be in trouble. So whenever he has business dealings involving Malaysia, he tries to avoid it.

Afterall the public has a choice of not giving the under table money and bring this issue to the higher authorities. If the public kept on giving...I don't see why they stop taking....and once they start taking...they will ask from the next person....and it became a norm. I suggest that the public should put their feet down and demand for a better services from the government rather than going the easier way...i.e..pay to settle the problem... and would anyone take the trouble to lodge complaint?

It is sometime very hard to go the Legal/proper way to get thing done because we live in a society which is full of greediness and tendency to get thing done quick and simple. This is a very typical Asian culture where a lot of time self interest come first.
For example in the business world,at this point of time if we dont give some Kopi money we might end up losing to our competitor. For example things like bidding for "G" contract,it is almost a must to pay kopi money or you are some big shot to obtain it .
The other issue is also the low pay of "G" servant in Malaysia. For example is the diff of Prison or Police Officer of Malaysia and Singapore.I ever heard from the Officer from Malaysia quite a num of Traffic police rejected a promotion because once they are promoted they will not be able to go on their Bike for patrol anymore which will subsequently deny them of side income.I think the Malaysia G are doing the right thing in increasing the civil servant salary in Malaysia but there is still much to be done because the salary is still too low to curb the act of corruption.Just for your info a grad with 2nd class honours with National service in Singapore salary start at about 2.9K .
My Humble sharing:)

CH, I agree with what you say. And we admitted that typical Asian culture where a lot of time "self interest come first" ( I'm not too sure how many will agree with me). But don't you think it's time for us to change this bad element? Maybe the culture has seen Asian success for many centuries but do we think we want this culture anymore?
I can understand how low pay the Malaysian G servant got. But they must also understand that before going into service. I have people without fail to ask me whether they join Police force can allowed them to take bribe or not. You see, that is the public perspective on the G services. Any comment?

Those who did actually did join on their own accord; planning to make a difference usually find themselves disappointed.
As for the typical Asian culture, I doubt much will change given the current situation. How much impact can the small fries make with the big fishes still going about with it? We are really in need of a leader who dares to shake the very foundation at every level, not just making an example of a couple of small fries.

First of all like what all you guys are saying the Top management got to take the first step. But I would say this will be a long issue if not everlasting. This is due to the fact that a lot of people on top there would not stop living in this kind of comfort zone.I can tell you that you can hardly find any company which have not giving Kopi money somehow or rather.
I would only say we can reduce the rate of corruption first, and that should be our Gov foremost goal because to prevent it alltogether would be near impossible.First of all the education must do an important part too , for example in changing our so call Asian Culture.
Personally I would be happy if our country corruption rate is down by 50%.I would say that itself is already a very heavy task.I can say even in country like Singapore there is still corruption .Its just that the rate is low and does not involve the mass public most of the time.
Another problem is a lot of Police officer or government servant already plan to take bribe before they join that particular service. They already know of the low pay but at the same time they also know of the "Side Income Available". But if the pay is high like in some developt country like Hk or Singapore [Asian also :)] they will have to think twice because their stable and good paying Job are at stake. On the other hand if their Job are too low they would not even mind losing that particular Job.

I think I can sum up that everyone agree that the changes must come from the top and there must be a political will to do so. Yee Kin says that it is hard to change the negative "Asian Culture" but Chee Hong pointed out that it should starts from education. However it should change, it should not be a drastic change that we Asian lost our own identity. At this point of time, I am still wondering whether taking bribes or offering bribes is part and parcel of Asian Culture. Whatever it is, we Asian should take pride on our own cultures.
Thank you for participating on this topic.

Roti canai and batik spacebound
BY GEOFFREY LIP
KUALA LUMPUR: By 2007, the first Malaysians will be launched into space and they will be taking with them a piece of home – batik and roti canai.
National Space Agency (NSA) director-general Prof Datuk Dr Mazlan Othman said the astronauts could exchange culture and food with their foreign counterparts, as they would be spending six to eight days at the International Space Station.
“We will have a programme called Batik in Space and we will also launch a programme called Roti Canai in Space to see how we can bring Malaysian delicacies up to the space station.
“We will research ways to bring our astronauts' favourite food into space.
“These we can bring to Houston, in the American state of Texas, where they will study how it can be brought into space,” she said yesterday at the Exploring the Solar System exhibition launch at the National Planetarium here.
She said they would also consult ulama if the astronauts chosen were Muslim.
“If they are Muslim, we will have to ask how he or she would perform their prayer rituals or where the kiblat is. You would need an ulama for that,” she said.
Russia is expected to send Malaysia’s first astronaut into space as part of a scientific mission on board the International Space Station.
Dr Mazlan said the Russians are expected to be in Malaysia by the end of the month, and the astronauts' names would be announced by year-end.

Listeners want favourite foods for space debut
PETALING JAYA: While Red104.9 radio listeners thought it weird that roti canai and batik had been chosen to make a space trip with Malaysia’s first astronauts, many nominated instant noodles Maggi Mee and yong tau foo to be included.
Other items that made the list were papadam (thin lentil flour wafers), pickles (achar), chee cheong fun and chi-kut teh.
The poll was based on comments via SMS and phone calls during the radio station’s weekday morning show The Kickstart hosted by deejays Shareena and Tim.
“There were some listeners who asked the question, 'Are they going up there for a picnic?',” a statement from the deejays said.
There were also more down to earth suggestions from the listeners. Topping the list was the symbol of Malaysian unity – the Jalur Gemilang.
On Tuesday, National Space Agency (NSA) director-general Prof Datuk Dr Mazlan Othman said that Malaysian astronauts would be taking batik and roti canai with them to space in 2007.

And suprisingly....it appear in Utusan Malaysia today :
Anak penjual roti canai kedua terbaik STPM 2004
Oleh: MOHD. KHUZAIRI ISMAIL
Ibu bapanya berpisah kira-kira 13 tahun lalu ketika Teng Teng berusia enam tahun.

Hmm...Fascinating news!
Maybe they should have astronaut suits made of batik prints.
Do we even have enough funds for these sort of programmes?

What she say is very true...the import duty has in fact decrease which actually make the car more cheaper. However, they g decided to protect the local car maker, hence they imposed the excise duty which is not restricted under AFTA to make our local car more competitive in terms of pricing. It's just a manipulation...korek lubang to tampal the other lubang

Hmmm.....the funding....first you have to know that this is a joint programme between Malaysian and the Russian government. The Russian will do everything from training to sending the Malaysian Astronaunt to the space. In return the Malaysian government will buy Sokhail Fighter Jets from the Russian and also sending oil palm to Russia by barter, viz the Russian are getting the oil palm without paying a single cent. That's how the get the money.
And it's not the Malaysian are going to build the space center, rockets or any training center. Just send a Malaysian, roti canai and batik then the rest you figure it out lar...

ISSUE: IS EXAMS AN ILLUSION OR REALITY IN MALAYSIA?
The objective of STPM is to pass people?
How do you explain the fact that 87% of the students passed the examinations of the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) recently? When during your grandfather's time only 10% would have passed?
Are students getting smarter? Or are STPM questions getting easier?
Let me put things in their proper perspective.
During your grandfather's time, they would ask exam questions like:
In what year did Parameswara founded the kingdom of Melaka?
The correct answer was "1402", and they found that only 10% of the students managed to answer the question correctly. This didn't go down too well with the authorities, because the objective of the exams was to pass people.
I mean, what's the point of having exams if people fail?
So later, they found another way to ask the same question:
Parameswara founded the kingdom of Melaka in the year:
(a) 2001
(b) 2004
(c) 1986
(d) 1975
(e) 1402
Tick the correct answer.
The results were better in that 20% of the students passed. But it was
still not good enough, so the authorities tried a different tact a few years later.
Parameswara founded the kingdom of Melaka in the year1402. True or false?
Well, half of the students guessed "True" and the other half guessed "False". Fully 50% passed. The results were getting pretty acceptable by now.
Most other countries would be satisfied with a 50% passing rate, but not us. We are a better country, because we are a boleh country. The authorities then cracked their heads and then came out with this one:
Read the following sentence carefully.
"Parameswara, the cousin of Proton-Iswara, founded the kingdom of Melaka in the year 1402." Underline the name of the person who founded Melaka.
60% underlined "Parameswara", 30% underlined "Proton-Iswara" and 10% underlined "1402". Hooiyoh......60% managed to pass!
So krever! But for some reason, the authorities were still not contented. So last year, they came out with this gem: One day in the year 1402, Parameswara founded the kingdom of Melaka. Then he went home to have dinner. What did he eat?
13% handed in blank answers, 57% wrote "Maggi Mee",
and 10% wrote "Kentucky Fried Chicken", and 20% wrote "Tree bark".
the official answer was "Food" of course! After the marking was over, it was found that 87% of the students had passed.
87%............now that's pretty impressive!
I don't mean to insult anyone or downplayed the "achievement" of the recent STPM achievers or anyone who had taken such exams. But let us discuss it intellectually and study the impact which it has to our society...and unfortunately, in this discussion we do not have multiple choice here. :P
The implications? We have overcrowded Universities, lack of skills among young graduates and thousands of unemployed graduates.
What do you think?
where did the article come from?

The above article doesn't reflect the actual questions of STPM but rather set as an example on the direction and format of the questions being asked in the exam in recent period. It may not just confine to STPM but also other public examinations.

I totally agree. It would be home if you are still in the same industry as the degree you had obtained. need more survival skill man than the knowledge.
now adays... fresh grads are so picky. perhaps, uni is so much easier to pass and get a degree, skill workers are getting lesser... wrold had changed...
wow.. talking like an old lady here.. but it is true... some fresh grads' response, you can never believe it!!! It shock you most of the time!!
U ask you question " how come you are unemployed for 6 months?, they go.... aaaa.......after like 30 seconds, they ask.."can you repeat again?"
Can u believe that?
