my cousins can speak all the family dialects plus malay even when they were just toddlers... lagi impressive was they can switch dialect/language based on the person in the family they speak to without sweat...

sila.....u must try to atleast speak to ur kids in malay so dat they will not loose their mother tongue. Both my nephew and niece (Dayang & Irwan) they can under stand malay but they refuse to speak the language...they rather speak in english and mandarin.

in perak dialect, "wan" is the same as "mak" meaning aunty.

Sulong is eldest, and in perak the tradition is Yong (short for "long"/"sulong") to mean eldest sister, Yop is for eldest brother (this is what i call my brother and sister-in-law). Bongsu does mean youngest, so can be manja - my youngest aunty i call "Wan Chu" (Chu short for "Su"/"Bongsu"). also can be youngest is "Cik", short for "Kecik". i've chosen to be "Wan Cik" instead of "Wan Chu", both of which would be acceptable for my nephew to call me. but somehow, because i am (as some of you can be witness to) not at all small or petite, i thought "Cik" short for "Kecik" would be a funny oxymoronish thing to go with.. :D

subsequently, in thirty years or whatever, when my nephew has a child, his kid can call me "Opah Cik".

oh yeah, in chinese culture, we inherite the ranks too... we do have our strange asian quirks but they are good quirks.. that's what make us special... we're different by race and culture, yet we're quite integrated in many ways... i really enjoy these unique customs we have..

the aussie accent is difficult - the vowel sounds are so hard to approximate. i would need a tape so i can imitate the vowel sounds and work very hard before i would be able to do it. i'm currently working on a southern accent (like Georgia and Lousiana types). worked in north carolina for over a year, and i started getting it in my ear.

i can do an OK boston accent since i lived there so long, but it's hard to maintain it. i have to pick a sentence and think about it before it will come out Bostonian.. :)
