just want to know how much most of you think is JUST enough to live a comfortable life in kl...

1. if you're married, then the question relates to combined income since the income will be to support family
2. if single, then the question relates to single income

JC

I guess it depends largely on the commitment (i.e. bank loans) as well as FAMA bank reserve (backup nia)... :D

It depends on your needs and wants...

KoChun
01-18-2005, 12:38 AM
Haiyah, why all answered 'depends' nia. Really so difficult to answer meh?

My answer.
1. Married, MYR10,000 per month
2. Single, MYR6,000 per month

Remember, KL standard nia.

This thread should be interesting. It's kinda late now (1am) to engage in this sort of topic but as an entree..let's say if your Net Asset Value is more than your Liabilities you should live comfortably. Will elaborate in detail when I am more sober..yawn! :)

Have lost touch with that aspect of home....i am guessing only
For Single person only

1)House Payments (1.6k monthly)
2)Car (1.2k monthly)
3)Gas/Petrol (RM200)
4)Food($500)
5)Utilities($250)

Then 6k should be very comfortable...

Twice a week....haha.... :D

Oops, thot u were talkin abt dat...sorry....

Well...it is very dependent on two of your assets, house and car....in which individual do have a choice on what to buy.....

I guess, apart from these 2 items, RM2k should be sufficient for a single person and do add RM1k per kid. So for me it would be RM6k for 2 adults n 2 kids...House n car is another issue altogether....all dependent on what you buy and aso ur loan tenure...

Hmm,

House Loan RM1.3K
Toll RM460
Utilities RM750
Groceries RM500
Petrol RM350
Car Loan <too scary to print>
Wife not working <priceless>
2 kids <depend on whats advertised on TV>
Big Boys Toys <look at '2 kids' section>

...the rate this is going and factoring current salary, I am totally screwed in 3 years.

Bottomline, its never enuff! Never ever.

hmmm.. to live in KL, to be able to live comfortable as in, able to rent a room in BU, drive a reasonable good car ie honda civic and have extra $$ to spend... single will have to earn around 5-6K. But bear in mind, women and men's need are different. If the woman likes to spend alot.. then 6k also not enuf. Same with men who has a materialistic gf, 6k also not enuf. But if the man and woman are both down to earth and shrewd, then 5k is more than enuf.

as for married couples, to be able to rent a house (not room) in BU, drive a Lexus (4WD) and having 1-2 children, it will be at least 10-12K (combined income).. hehe...

that is to live real comfortably!

That is possibly the easiest one. Housewives don't need to drive to work (you save $$$ on petrols), no need too much ICI (another $$$$avings), no need office attire ($$$$avings), no need to travel so much ($$$$avings), many more....easy lah. But if your wive (housewive) got mahjung kaki, you better watch out hor....20K per month might not be enough though. :D

For husbands to do that, husbands must earn at least a 5 figure income, baru boleh..

Give u an example. My uncle and aunt, both UM graduate. After graduating, uncle went for pilot training. Aunt became system analyst. Aunt worked for 4 years before giving birth. Uncle then kept being promoted as there is a great advantage in becoming a pilot with a degree. Plus he's smart.
So now, aunt and uncle has 3 children, aunt stopped working for many years already, both owns some shop lots and a condo in Subang. Living comfortable well.. but they only own a car (proton wira) from then until now.

My point is, both my uncle and aunt, came from a very poor family. No inheritance, no nothing. Yet, they worked it out themselves and became successful. All becuz of that book which I've mentioned before in some thread.. "Your money or your life" by Joe Dominguez.

Speaking of that.. pilot is a great job, put aside the risk.. hehe :)

Unless and until you migrate and earn the USD's and bank in 50% of your salary to my M'sia A/C then you can retire after 10 yrs when you came back to KL. You worked 10 yrs in the USA and we had to slouch 40 yrs (no change in currency rate) here. Keen to try it out? :D

Not sure if you heard of US 401k...but if you just contribute 6% of your income and wait 30 years...you could easily make USD$500k for your retirement. Of course...if you contribute more(higher salary)....USD1mill is a possibility

Rule 72 says your capital will double in three years if your annual return is 24%(not necessarily 3 yrs depending on your annual return rate).

Yup, possible why not. I am a firm believer. :)

I think we need to focus on both saving & earning. The more you earn the more expectation or things that we would like to have. Upgrading our life with better food, holidays & etc. Almost impossible to say the magi word "Enough"

Agree but the primary objective would be to earn don't you agree. I believe we have heard alot of advise from our older generations saying that the key to become rich is through savings and buying rubber estate lands and other forms of investment. However, with most people income today, you can hardly buy any estate land. Buying a house itself is already so much of a burden. Saving becomes secondary when you have earn the money. Of course, we have to control our desires in spending more money with a higher income but that too is also difficult.

Having read through the postings in this thread, I get the notion that money is never enough. Oh, how true it can be.

But, I'd like to re-iterate what I mentioned before (in other threads), contentment in what you have is the key. You may not be earning big bucks, but living comfortably, where you're secure is enough (at least, for me).

You see, you can make yourself a slave of money when all you think of is just earning extra bucks (under conditions like working extra hours, sacrificing your social life and friends, family).

It's important to be wise stewards of our finances. No doubt, money is never enough, but when you know how to live within your means, you will never face lack.

People who start working, getting their first month's salary surely feel like they're rich, because it's like the first time you're earning big money for your own.

Once you see the world and the pressure that comes with it, and begin to follow the trend, everything becomes a race of gaining, and what diffentiates people from the others is through the possession they have.

Oh, sometimes it's sad to see comparisons made this way. Money sets people apart.

If you ask me, if enough money changes me to become a selfish person, not caring, and stepping others down so that I may gain more, I'd rather not have that, and be some one who is always thankful for what I have right now. I would never want to regret any decisions.

Very true daboss, the more we earn the greater temptation to spend more.

In many scenarios, society pressure also plays a great role. You can;t expect a taukeh driving a S320 eating at a hawker center or staying in a terrace house. Later the suppliers, the bankers will start queuing at the door chasing for payment... heheheee

You are absolutely right....the more u earn, the more u spend, u buy bigger house, bigger cars , go for better hols....so in a way, it is never enough.... :D

Moral behind this is make the best of what you earn and spend wisely. Whatever it is, most of us are earnin more than our parents and if they manage to provide well for us...surely we can do better for our kids as well....

That's exactly what the book says.. ppl, please go get the book and read... you spend more when you earn more, not becuz you have the money, but because of how much energy and effort you used up to work, therefore you wanna "pamper" yourself in a way... thinking that, "I've worked hard and I do deserve something"... this is a very wrong thinking. If you wanna save money... you should be aware and conscious of what you buy...

to use a cliche, life is short and you're only young for a while. i did that saving thing when i was out of uni, but now i've decided to enjoy myself because i'm only young for a while more and you just never know when the fat lady's going to sing for you. having said that, i'm probably going to start saving again soon. :)

haha...so sensible... :)
depends where you live.
in perth, where i live, renting is relatively cheap, eating out is not that cheap.
in melbourne, renting is more expensive, eating out is cheaper and better than perth.
in sydney, renting is the most expensive, food is also expensive.
i guess, the good thing about australia is that it's such a lovely country that you don't really need much money to live as long as you don't mind missing out on overseas holiday and branded stuff. there's a lot of out-doorsy stuff you can do like surfing, bush walking, rock climbing, picnics and all that.
what about where you are?

earlier in this thread, already mentioned rent in dublin (where i am now living) is very high, plus dublin is one of the most expensive city to live in europe... but luckily with EU expansion, costs for travelling have been reduced and the open market competition makes it great as there are always cheap no-frill flights and holiday packages, plus the strong euro currency currently, things are seemingly cheaper elsewhere so we don't feel the ouch in travelling and purchasing abroad... i do a good bit of travelling, but tend to stay with friends so that's reduced cost again... :)

You are paying in advance for your future. So, with this investment which you have put in, you will see returns soon. Even in business, it is the same. Mgnt look at 2 things, ROI & TCO to determine if they have invested correctly or if they have purchased wisely.

daBoss also talk cock in this forum. He is raking in his returns from the time and effort he has spend preparing for the real world. Buff and warhammer is another example. All pretending to be tight so that they dont attract attention. Kidnapping case is now so rampant. If you know what I mean.

[EDITED]

But, my advice is to start working as early as you can. Studying forever won't make you rich. With all the knowledge but without applying it means nothing.

Hm.... don't worry lilian, there's definitely a greater advantage for doing PhD now. You are NOT missing out anything now as your years ahead will be secured and you will earn back everything that you loaned. To have a degree is ALWAYS better than none, especially when you are able to study. Ppl will never know if they will earn big bucks even if they start working early, and without an appropriate degree. It's only so far you can go with a normal qualification especially in an environment where qualifications are highly regarded.

Also, it's proud to have Sitiawanist having more and more doctors/professors now :) :D

However, it is tough when it comes to financial. it's ALWAYS an issue! It's a bit of a burden to have to pay back 4-year loan for studies, especially in the UK!! that's like at least RM300K?? But I'm sure you will earn it back :) It wouldnt matter if your degree is far more important than the money...

For undergrad, definitely cheapest would be local Uni laa.. but many ppl seem to not have good impression on it. If your English is fine, you shouldnt need to worry about anything. You can still continue your studies with a degree earned at local uni and then do masters/PhD elsewhere...

You dont have to be the top 1% to make your millions. Bill Gates didnt even finsh uni and he is one of the riches man in the world.

One of the riches guy from my year was busy fighting in school instead of studying. He now owns his own contracting firms for the construction industry. I think he also millionaire at 30 yo. Build from scratch.

If there is a will, there is a way. If you do deskbound jobs and not customer facing jobs or revenue driven jobs, the prospect of earning money is much lower. But end of the day, it is not how much you want to earn but what job gives you the satisfaction.

For woman always got short cut to riches and fame. Marry a man who already has that and you shall inherit riches and fame immediately.

PRC=People's Republic of China. A general term used to describe those chinese girls in Malaysia. Most of the time, you'll find them in Pubs and Karaokes. They can be pretty sweet thing who make you fall in love with them and than they give you all kinds of sob stories (like in those days where your grand parents actually send money back to china to repair houses..etc) and before you know it, they have your credit cards and atm cards!!

So, it is wrong for me to ignore them? kena farked for nothing by my friends.

hmmm.. to live in KL, to be able to live comfortable as in, able to rent a room in BU, drive a reasonable good car ie honda civic and have extra $$ to spend... single will have to earn around 5-6K.

I say 10-12K not enuf for the BU and Lexus lifestyle!!! No need to factor in insurance kah...if got kids already...The premiums can be a real killer.

yup, just consider this...

bu house - rm 500K - monthly installment - rm 2.5 k to rm 3 k
for a car like lexus - i would think monthly installment - around rm 3 k

just car and house oreidi rm 6 k. haven't even considered children, leisure, etc.

also, need to consider income tax and epf deductions, i betcha for income around rm 10-12 k, tax + epf will be about 30%...

just car and house oreidi rm 6 k. haven't even considered children, leisure, etc.

also, need to consider income tax and epf deductions, i betcha for income around rm 10-12 k, tax + epf will be about 30%...

how???
buy a hse in bukit jalil n drv a sorento.... :D

a little bit lor... but it's fun this way, no...?
since you started the thread, maybe you want to conclude and close it..?
it will be enough when you have enough to buy your friend a bmw.

the point i am trying to get is human beings are designed not to be fully satisfied. there is always something that we want more.

conclusion: never enuf.

hey..please...I do my share of the housework...the one thing i hate to do is sweep the floor. I would rather vacumn them....but washing toilets n moping floor is my expertise...But I must say Anne is better with the kids...
