Here goes....
Does anyone think the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy did justice to the book?
My view is they certainly were a visual fest, but its tantamount to cheating yourself of you dont read the book as well..
Anybody care to comment or rebut?

Sila & I are, for sure. Both the books and movies are great in their own rights. There's no way they could have fitted the Council of Elrond in its entirety into the movie, for example, without putting 75% of the movie audiences to sleep; neither could they have given Tom Bombadil screen time without messing with the pace of the movie. However, I do have a problem with them not having the Scouring of the Shire at the end of the movie.
Pop quiz: Who else are among the 5 Wizards (Maiar made flesh) that came to Middle Earth from Valinor to help overthrow Sauron apart from the White Wizard Saruman and the Grey Wizard Gandalf?

Radagast, I think for one.Dunno who the other 2 are, yet. U check out Encyclopedia of Arda website often? Agree with you on the purist level on the exclusion of the SotS, but put on the movie buff cap, it'll be an anticlimax to the ending if they did put it in, I guess PeteJack gave us a compromise by having the 'possible' scouring as part of the "Mirror of Galadriel" scene
Also, Ultimate Toys are taking orders for the Statue of Sauron by Sideshow Weta, that thing is HUGE!!! and the price .... ALSO HUGE !!! Want, want, but pay, pay, pay, you Die ! Die ! Die ! starving....

i am a fanatic of the trilogy (though it's actually 6 books bound into 3). read all of them years before the movies can out. i have also read the accompanying books that talks about the hstory of middle-earth :D
since the dem valar didn't want to come, they sent their kuncu, the maiar from the order of the istari. 5 of them came to the aid of middle-earth. curunír (saruman the white), olórin (gandalf the grey), aiwendil (radagast the brown), alatar and pallando.
i only know of radagast the brown can talk and communicate with the animals - not a lot mentioned about him and the other 2 'missing' maiar.

Not much are known of them, except that when the Wizards' ship arrived at the Grey Havens, they left immediately for the East and were never heard of again. In fact their names weren't even in the books, not even in the appendices. IIRC the were named in JRR Tolkien's notes in the History of Middle Earth series edited by Christopher Tolkien.

I think those that have digested the History of Middle Earth series will really appreciate the depth of character development Tolkien has infused into the LOTR main characters, I mean I am in constant awe at the background history that a large number of the characters and location in Middle Earth has thanks to him.
Silmarillion (and Unfinished Tales) are a must-read !!
Heart pounding moments in Film 3 4me:
1. The Arrival of the Rohirrim on Pelennor Field
- Bernard Hill's 'Death! Death! Death!' - Outstanding!!
2. The Gondorians and Eldars bowing in tribute to the Hobbits
- I could swear the was a sudden increase in sniffling and heavy
breathing in the cinema at the onset of this scene (think I must
hv bn one of them); Touching to the Extreme.

Apart from those books, other ancilliary books you can read are:
1) Atlas of Middle Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad
2) Tolkien Bestiary by David Day
3) Any of the dozens of Middle Earth Role Play (MERP) RPG sourcebooks published by Iron Crown Enterprise. All the books are out of print, since the RPG license have been transferred to Decipher. MERP had entire books devoted to certain regions, like Lothlorien, Northern Mirkwood (Thranduil's Kingdom), Southern Mirkwood (Dol Guldur area), Mount Gundabad, Weathertop (all eras, not just the ruins of the Third Age), Arthedain (during the early Third Age), etc.
Even if the books are out of print, you can find an active online community here:

i dun agree with this point... when i read the book, i could actually feel the pride, excitement, honor, need and 'can-do'.... but in the movie, it was 'just' one of the scenes...
Well guys, all in all the movies do give credit to Tolkien's work that is now more people knows about it.
By the way, would anyone care to comment whether they should make The Hobbit into a movie or any other Tolkien's writing into a movie.

It would be a big plus to Tolkien fans if The Silmarillion as well as The Hobbit are BOTH adapted for the bigscreen....one thing at a time, I guess. I would have preferred the former to come first, though. Imagine Sauron having more screen time !!

The Silmarillion would be great. If done right, the book can be adapted into a dozen movies. Lay of Lethian, Narn i Hin Hurin, Akallabeth... all can be different stories for different movies.

Heyyyy, now THAT's a thought!
It would do wonders for my current Middle-Earth movie withdrawal symptoms.
Reminds me of the MTV skit on ROTK with PeteJack and Stiller; a multipart prequel would be a great idea as opposed to a 'sequel' :D
well, i read the Hobbit and LoTR trilogy when i was still at ACS :) so it's been a long while. i never was able to get through the Silmarillion or any of the other history books Tolkien and his people wrote. so i did love the movies, and i must say that the SOUNDTRACKS were just f**king awesome.
my fav by far is the theme for the Uruk-Hai, first heard at the end of FoTR. man, what a tension-bringing, doomsaying, danger-ridden piece of music!

What year was this 'unofficial' RPG club? Back in 86-87 some guys in 4ScM2 and 5ScA1 were playing the original Dungeons and Dragons RPG, and I know that my cuz Awie of Class 95 had a group of RPGers in his time.

Hisham's post in another thread got me thinking, when to speak Quenya, when to speak Sindarin. THe general impression I got is that we should be training ourselves to be adept at QUenya, first then if interested move to Sindarin.
ie Quenya is the Bahasa Istana, while Sindarin is Bahasa Rakyat, dis true??
What worries me is if we trying to get to grasp with Quenya when in actual fact we mite be hodgepodging it with sprinkling of Sindarin.
Comments, Edains/Ulairs/Eldars(third category ppl, perasan laa lu!)?
Hisham

Quenya is like Latin, if Sindarin is English... Noldors speak Quenya almost exclusively. Unfortunately, they're mostly back in the Undying Lands. The Sindar (consisting of the exiled Noldors from the 1st Age) and the Silvan (those who haven't seen the Undying Lands before, like Thranduil's kin, and the local wood-elves under Galadriel) speak mostly Sindarin, but they use Quenya for special events.
Aragorn speaks Sindarin most of the time with the other elves, but when he sang his throne ascension bit, that was in Quenya.
Or we can also go with Dwarvish: Tarag-Udrig! Rakhas-Udrig!

OK, when the movie is filmed, I have a strong feeling that they'll have a Legolas cameo (played by Orlando Bloom) at Thranduil's kingdom, seeing as Legolas is Thranduil's son, and Thranduil locked up Bilbo, Thorin, Balin, Gloin and co in jail.

for cross-Babylon5 and LOTR fans only.
didja catch on Babylon5, Season 2 episode titled 'The Geometry of Shadows', the techno-mage was actually quoting a line from Tolkien in regards to 'wizards being prone to anger...'? Cool.

The entire B5 series was an exercise in Tolkien references. JMS practically said in an issue of Cinescape I read that it was inspired by LOTR. Shadows. Rangers. The hidden king. Ancient races leaving the universe, leaving the younger ones behind.
