after buying the nikon d50 from KK, i realised i seldom use it.. dslrs are just too cumbersome..
i don't really want to be carrying a huge sign saying "TOURIST!!" when i go on holidays
when i was in HK, i got myself a Canon S90
http://asia.cnet.com/cnet/i/r/2009/dc/44965338/sc001.jpg
for most purposes, it's a fantastic camera, esp for night shots..

SLR provides more control rather than leaving it to electronics to adjust...
i agree with that.. but to what extent to we really require the control of our pictures?
again, for people who want to use it as/for a profession, then sure i can understand..
however, i see more and more people buying dslrs, spending time researching costs, benefits, accessories, magazines, only to take family and vacation shots.. and best of all.. only put them up on the internet :weird:
i've been using an SLR since 1990, starting with a Nikon EM.. in between i've used the "idiot proofs 35mm" ones as well..
when it comes to actual negatives and processed photos, there's a huge disparity between SLR and non-SLR
having said that, my photography tutor back then was the senior photojournalist for the straits times and he's won several awards for his photos from kodak instant cameras, you know those you buy and throw away after processing.
i think someone has said in this forum recently, a better camera doesn't make you a better photographer..
I think most people think that by buying a DSLR camera, their photos automatically comes out like pros. One can have the best hammer and chisel but don't mean one can instantly carve out a statue from a block of stone.
These days, people got more money to throw at stuff they think they need.
Unless you can invest the time to learn how to use the DSLR, better go get a casual camera. When traveling, i prefer a P&S camera, no time to waste snapping pictures at one spot.

There are differences between a DSLR's photo compared to a digital P&S. A P&S cannot do what a DSLR can. Bare with me, I am not trying to be snobbish.
In the days of 35mm film camera, the body of the camera is only used to hold the film. The film is always the same size 35mm (not talking about medium or large format). So the lense of the camera is the only variable. SLR then just give the advantage of changable lense compared to a compact 35mm camera.
With digital cameras, the lense is not the only variable. The sensor size will affect the outcome as well. At the moment DSLR still have the largest sensor for consumer cameras. The expensive ones have full frame sensors (equal to 35mm film size) and the cheaper ones have a smaller sensor (DX for nikon, no idea what canon calls theirs :cheesy:, and the nikon's are bigger then the canon ).
We have been taking about crop factor of a certain lense on a certain camera. The biggest effect is not the crop factor but depth of field. The bigger the sensor the smaller the depth of field for a given aperture and focal length. In another word, if both the DSLR and P&S camera have a lense of 50mm focal length and f2.0 aperture, the DSLR will produce a background that is more blur then the P&S.
All things considered, if you don't know what the camera settings are for, the it really doesn't make any difference. It's the eye behind the camera that really makes the difference.

these days P&S digicams are damn smart..
eh.. have u seen the new Photoshop CS5? fantastic man.
1 function on its own is worth buying the entire program..
you can highlight something on the foreground and hit "delete" and photoshop can fill in the background for you, automatically!!
the example they gave was 2 kids on the beach with the ocean and rocky cliffs in the B/G.. just draw around the 2 kids and delete.. and photoshop filled in the sand where their legs were, ocean to replace the body and the clifss where their heads were.. needs a tiny bit of touch-up, but what a time-saver!

If your skill is at level 10, then having a DSLR will bring it up to level 12. But if you are at level 1, getting a DSLR might bring you down to level 0.

true mar..
if you buy a DSLR and use zoom zoom lenses and take pictures in full auto mode, it kind of defeats the purpose. not to say that it's wrong to shoot full auto, but you are not maximising the potential of the camera mar. Much like buying a 60" LED full HD TV and only watching VCD on it..
... or buying a car with 6 speed transmission and only using 2nd 3rd and 4th gear..
... or buying a state of the art computer with the latest processor, 32gb memory, 4x3TB HDD in RAID1 config complete with UPS, backup tape, and a E1 internet line and a 30" monitor only to do online chat and play facebook games.
..or buying a HUGE samsonite trolley luggauge only to put one change of clothes to teluk batik...

which one better ar? The one that fit better in your hands.
ok ok .. if dowan talk about skills.. I assume that you do not want to talk about brand preference as well as the type of photos you like to take and PURELY refer to technical specs of the two cameras.
If that is the case.. then check out this link <CLICK> (http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=canon_eos600d&products=nikon_d5100).
but seriously... both models will give you bang for buck. Both are also very good starting point.
So which one is better? That is up to you. Essentially they are the same spec wise. There are minor differences here and there, but is up to you to decide which one is the better.. or which one you prefer.
If you asking me which one you should buy... then it's easy. Get the Canon 600D. Why? Because it's newer.

with skill both the same!!!!
SOKONG 1,000,000 per cent Loktor Alf - but talk about STILL PHOTOGRAPHY, noise reduction versus detail control, as well as burst rate shooting, Canon 600D may still lose quite a wee bit to D5100 even though 600D is WAY MORE SUPERIOR, video-wise
Ok Kamkuey. Thk. Now I serious want to get one
that why I'm asking so much.
I will go through and see which one should I prefer.
which one better ar? The one that fit better in your
hands.
ok ok .. if dowan talk about skills..
So happy buying!! Hope not to see you asking the same thing again next year.. hahahaha
fuah!! best reply ever!!
