Hey u guys n gals in s'pore, what can u tell us about the
budget hotels in s'pore, those around S$100? I wanna find
out about those in chinatown, near sentosa or around that
area, and those near changi airport. On the net, they look
nice, but as the saying goes, "looks can be deceiving"...
I found this site-http://hotels.online.com.sg/. There's this
particular hotel-Peacock Hotel at 55 Keong Saik Road , that
caught my eye. What I wanna know is, is it convenient to travel
from there to the central town, what about traffic, meaning is
that area always jam packed with cars. Safety wise, I know s'pore is ok.

Then there's this hotel Costa Sands Resorts, near Changi. In S$,
it doesn't seem much, but when u convert to RM, it's definitely
not cheap.

Chris,

Costa Sands is really a chalet type place, mostly locals book them for weekenders and BBQ.

Peacock Hotel is a really bad place. Voted one of the dirtiest hotels in Singapore.

Your best bet is still Hotel 81 (http://www.hotel81.com.sg) or Fragrance Hotel (http://www.fragrancehotel.com). Just stay away from Geylang and Joo Chiat areas.

You could try Habour Ville Hotel (http://www.harbourvillehotel.com/) which is somewhat close to sentosa.

chinatown tends to be quite crowded. carparks are difficult to find. but u can take the MRT to and fro. Chinatown station and Harbourfront station (Sentosa) are on the same line, 2 stations away. or u can go to dhoby ghaut, 2 stations in the other direction.

let me check with the wife

when are you planning to pop by? and do you have any particular must-go destinations? that would also be a determining factor

my friend suggested this place too: http://www.oneflorenceclose.com/rates.html

Well, I am planning to go over to s'pore for a short family hol
somewhere beginning of next month when Quinz is having 2
weeks break. Hard to plan hol nowadays as the gals' hols don't
coincide. The last time we had a family hol there was when I
only had Quinz then, she was 4/5yrs old. She'll be 21 in 2 months
time. After that, my most recent one was last Dec, without
Quinz along. I was accompanying my sis-in-law n her gal for
a short 3 days trip, had something to do. I brought my younger
gal along, n we only managed to visit the zoo, jalan-jalan
at Bugis St, n Orchard in the evening. We stayed at an uncle's
place at Jurong.

Actually what I had in mind was Hong Kong, but with Universal
Studio in Sentosa, the gals chose s'pore. So hubby decided to
take the family there n leave all the bookings to me. Free n easy,
cari sendiri hols, is not his cup of tea. He believes in tour
companies....

So our plan is 5 days 4 nites trip. 2 at sentosa or nearby, n 2
near changi since we're flying over there. Now that u all know
when was the last time I've been to sentosa, please update
me. I remembered taking the cable car to sentosa back then.
Yet to know what to expect n how much sentosa has changed.
The hotels there all cost a bomb. The cheapest I found is The
Treasure resort, any of u know this place? Thought if not
convenient to travel in n out to sentosa during our first 2 days
there, might as well stay in that island itself n then move out
to the city for the last 2 nites. Should I, since our next trip
would most probably be when we go there with my grandkids?...:D

Hey everyone! I MIA for for than a year, I think. Haha.

Okay, anyway, I have a suggestion.

Metropolitan YMCA Singapore's accommodation.

http://www.mymca.org.sg/home/metro-y.html

They're a non-profit organization, with quite a competitive entry price as well (as long as you book online). I volunteered there for 2 months before. People there are exceptionally friendly.

Located somewhere near the central of Singapore as well.

Cheers!

If you take the budget hotel like Fragance and Hotel 81, just prepared to have a really small room. No place to put your luggage in your room and the floor is NOT carpetted. I think prices have gone up and you need to look at $150 per night for something more comfortable.

Costa Sands is really a chalet type place, mostly locals book them for weekenders and BBQ.
Note when staying at such places in weekends, the locals tend to be rowdy and noisy and sometimes drunk

Peacock Hotel is a really bad place. Voted one of the dirtiest hotels in Singapore.

yes! no wonder the name sounded familiar - it was in this news report: (http://www.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne+News/Malaysia/Story/A1Story20100129-195246.html)

"According to the survey, the dirtiest hotel was Phi Phi Don Chukit Resort of Thailand where 96 per cent of their guests had posted their reviews as "do not recommend" the hotel to anyone.

The other hotels were ...Goldkist Beach Resort (Singapore).. and Royal Peacock Hotel (Singapore).

Where is it?
Its near one of the North East line stations - Kovan MRT. From there you can take a train straight down to Harbourfront MRT which is about 20++ mins away, and take the Sentosa Express to Sentosa from Vivocity

I am not sure about hotels within Sentosa either. I would recommend staying somewhere comfortable la, like a place which is 3 stars and above. Gonna PM you something in a while

hmm future MIL sounds like u'r not driving

best bet then is to travel by MRT

Universal studios in sentosa easily accesible via Harbourft MRT, from there you can choose to take the bus, monorail or walk across the road to sentosa island. Cable car currently undergoing refurbishment work. Haha my workplace right beside the mrt station sometimes can use my cameras to see the activity in the theme park as well

Resort World Sentosa where Universal studios is is just at the northern shores of sentosa. So even if u walk from harbourft its just a matter of walking across the causeway. Théy also encourage taking public transport which is y per person via monorail or bus is a flat $2 or $3 return (go in pay come out free) whereas if u go by car different tariffs at different points of the day.

Try to look for accomodation near to mrt lines so u can travel around. Changi is also connected to the MRT station as well

There's a costa sands in Sentosa as well but not sure wehther its fully booked or not and what the rates are

I was thinking if its gonna be a family trip once every few years only y not make it a memorable one by booking into a nice hotel? swissotel at the stamford is at city hall has a vvery nice view of the CBD area but will set u back maybe $300 per night. Better than making it memorable by booking into a cheap cramp budget hotels and 'service workers' knocking on your door in the middle of the night or someone utilizing their services next door.

i think all hotel 81 and fragrance hotel also have hourly rates lei...except for those in geylang and joochiat

Aiyah, din grow up with gold spoon in the mouth mah, so tend to

no hotels under S$200 available in sentosa for my traveling dates.

Anyway, hubby didn't mind, told me to just book a nice hotel in
sentosa. No need to travel so much, nice surroundings with tress
n pool (just a guy's way to cover up that he hopes to get to cuci
mata a bit if there's a pool....:p). So I'm going to go ahead n book
one in sentosa. Flight booked liao. The only thing left is the last 2

Btw Alf, talking about tour, if u go with the whole kampung,
it is cheaper, but still u have to see what u're getting in
terms of accommodation, food, transport.

If just a family or small group, less than 10, it comes to about
the same, sometimes more plus their service. A friend of mine
up here went for the RM588 deal, 4/2nites, with a busload of
people, last Dec. Sounds cheap n reasonable, but of course both
nites r in a budget hotel n 1, on the bus while they're traveling
there. After calculation, I'll be paying about 3x more than my
friend, but, it'll be a 5/4nites, nice hotels in (2 nites)sentosa n
in the city, plus, i'm flying there n back.

try this (serious): next time on a flight, after two hours, tell the stewardess that he has severe leg cramps because the leg space is insufficient and see whether they will upgrade him to business class!

also, need to get up and walk up and down all the way to the end of the aisle every hour or so unless asleep

most food here are just so-so, even those that people queue for..

i still think malaysia has better food.

as for shopping, imported branded stuff tends to be cheaper in Singapore.

if something here costs SG$100, in KL would most likely be about RM280-300.

go to the zoo or night safari. still my favourite touristy thing to do in singapore. or maybe the s'pore flyer? when in sentosa, u could try the megazip or luge.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee is a staple for almost every hawker centre/food court.

But the Hainan style is not as common. Tends to have more of a smokey flavour than the normal ones.

i've tried a few places and i don't find it that enticing or appetizing. neither do I enjoy the normal style that much.

give me the black KL Hokkien Mee anytime. my usual place is at the Jalan 222 corner shop.

Will go and check it out this Sat.

When I first came to KL in 1988, I frowned at the KL Hokkien Mee. So fat and black, not like the ones in Swan.

Over the years, I craved for this dish and has become very choosy on the taste. I have been recommended lots of places in KL by friends over the years. 2 months ago, I tried the one at Jalan Ipoh. Comments I've heard, waa, very good leh, etc, etc, so I decided to try. To me so so only.

so far, only 2 places is up to my taste,
1. Old Klang Road, opposite Taman Desa junction - but I think it closed down some years ago.
2. Jalan Kepong, after the Desa Jaya police station. I am there almost every Friday nite. :D

2. Loh mee - 6/10. quite good.
3. Cantonese style kueh teow - 6/10. nothing very special.

waah.. so bad as that?

Wokay, back from s'pore. :D

A summary of my trip there. On the first day, we check into
Siloso Beach resort. A bit old, but very convenient n it has a
lovely pool, with the view of the sea. Tram rides r just in front
of the hotel. On the left, about 100m to the rides n monorail
station where u watch the Song of the sea in the evening.
Right, to the underwater world n Mega Zip ride, also about
100m away.

Universal is not fully completed yet, with the Madagascar corner
n sci fi corner, where the giant roller coaster is, still under work.
A bit smaller than the one in Japan, but their Shrek 4D movies,
Jurassic Park rides n Water world show, r the same. At least over
there everything is in english, whereas Japan, it's in their lingo, so
hear no road. So once it's fully completed, worth going.

Went to Golden Mile to try out the fried prawn mee n it was ok.
The peanut soup tang yuen was good. Ater checking out from
sentosa on the 3rd day, we check into Ibis on Bencoolen St.
The rooms r a bit small n it's new. Located just behind Bugis St,
u can shop till u drop at the malls n pasar malam at Bugis. My
buddy who went to sentosa to fetch us out, then took us to
Orchard. There, the highlight for my gals was bumping into
Russel Lee, the author of s'pore ghost stories, promoting his
20th book. My gals have been reading his book, so getting his
signature n a handful of gifts plus a picture with him, was a plus
to them. He took time to chat with them as well when he found
out we're from CH n shared some jokes.

As for the nite safari, to my opinion, day zoos n safaris r much
better. Not much animals to see, place dimly lit, no flash photos
allowed n there's no way u can walk around as the paths r dark,
so u have to take the tram ride. Shows r nothing to shout about
as well. On the 4th day, spent it in Jurong with an uncle, makan
n minum n got rather drunk by the end of the day...
One setback is the hot weather which tires us down. On the
whole, it was a pleasant trip. :)

Oh, my buddy took us ronda-ronda round s'pore n we saw some
of the places u mentioned. As u all in s'pore know, it was drizzling
on saturday, so we rather stay in the car n see look-see look.:D
Tax, if I'm not mistaken, been paying 10%+7% for hotels wor.
As for the flyer, after taking the rides in universal n looking at
how slow if was moving, my gals gave it a pass....

Oh ya, I saw the Korean rest Doong Ji that Bizzi recommend.
Just happened that my buddy took us to the Nyonya rest a
few shops away. Wanted to try the Katong Laksa but that
place was jam packed that day.

For those of u who have not been to Universal studio, here's
some tips. Since it's hot over there, bring paper fans, mini
battery fans, etc. There's water coolers in the park, so u
can refill your containers. Extra t-shirts for the hyperactive,
sweaty kids r advisable. Bring along disposable raincoats,
as the ride in Jurassic park will get u wet. Go in the morning
n head for the rides first. In the hot afternoon, u can then
slowly enjoy the shows in the air-con studios. Avoid sitting
in the front rows in the water world show, those colored
sits, unless u wanna cool down n get wet while watching
the show.

If u could, avoid hols. Even when i was there on a normal
weekday, it was rather packed by early noon when throngs
of tourist came to spend the rest of the day there. Having
to wait for about 1-2hrs when it's crowded is no fun as i've
experienced that in Japan during a weekend. Food, plenty
even as u enter Resort world. There's BreadTalk, noodle shop,
cafes n restaurants like Chilis outside Universal n in the park
as well.

I don't know whether once the park is completed, u'll get
coupons like S$10 per head for food n S$5 for souvenirs or
not cos' that's what we got but the one in Japan doesn't
give out such vouchers.
