i don't know what is it today but i'm happy. i just am.
maybe it's because it's sunny outside with clear blue sky, even if it's very cold and can be quite cold at times.
maybe it's the delayed after-effect from the release of accumulated stress on having to give a seminar yesterday, which in the end went quite well even though i didn't get to practice before hand - i finished the slides for the presentation a scant 20 minutes before the talk time. my boss who couldn't attend had a quick look and was very pleased with it. it's strange how he had so much more faith in my work than i do. and quietly encouraging too. it also makes me realise how lucky i am to have such a wonderful and supportive boss.
maybe it's the good long sleep that i had had yesterday after pulling an all nighter to get the talk ready the night before. i can't remember the last time i went to bed before 9.30pm even. i woke up feeling rested and fresh and it's all good.
maybe it's the continuous elation from the weekend after ireland won the rugby 6 nations grand slam after 61 years! what an amazing match to watch, where it was nail biting and nerve wrecking and cardiac arresting, up to the final seconds. when we won, the whole pub erupted with joy and plenty of huggings all round, that the guy in front of me actually hoisted me up in the air. and no, i didn't know him!
maybe it's the email that tells me that i'm really going to be published researcher, with the papers due to appear in science next month. they were both accepted last week but today we received notification of the publication date. it's a huge deal to get 2 science papers in one single day, even though i'm not the first author but one among many (they're two very big projects with international collaborations). now i need to work on my first author paper and get that somewhere good too.
maybe i'm just thankful for living it. the days. all the good and bad.
so what makes you happy today? too often we talk of dramatic events etc but not as often as we would in talking about little things that make us happy. come on, share your joyous moments! :)

and in talking re happiness, check out this video from TED (http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/97)...
it's not new but it's still fascinating in my opinion...
the video is quite long, approximately 22 minutes...
but it's well worth watching, and reflects over what was said...
congrats lil!!
ok - my happy thoughts is that i am happy that winter seems to have ended! i am thankful for sunny days with a nice breeze, and a giggling baby who loves being outside.
i am also happy to see said baby grow and the happiness that she brings to us. so that's my happy vibes :)

jerry, hehehe, that's true, wheeee weekend is coming!
zazu, M&M's? ;)
anson, congrats! have a great gig!
this morning, while chatting to my housemate re her salsa classes, it reminded me of our going out last weekend, where we were out for dinner plus dancing later on. one of her friends was dancing with me at one point, and since we were all amateurs (just dancing for fun) we were all trying to figure how to do turns and moves like that. the guy, at one stage, asked me "who's the one supposed to be leading here - you or me?"... ooops, i guess i shouldn't have bruised his ego by trying to figure the steps and instead let him led the dance, but it does make me chuckle over it.
thanks sila, thanks chris :)

happy moments for today:
i was up early and started baking. 3 savoury tarts/quiche, and a flourless chocolate cake. made some salad as well as caramelised carrots in balsamic vinegar too. cooking is one of the many joys of my life :)
having friends over for brunch/lunch. it has been a while since i invited them over because of thesis work but finally i decided i could take a break. and i did. we had the most fun day, eating and chatting and laughing. a lot of laughing. for a brunch that started at 1pm, we only wrapped it up at 9.30pm!
i also received news that a friend has just got married (well, officially registered as married but no ceremony yet) so yay, that's happy happy news! :D
just picturing your yummy food makes me happy.... caramelised carrots!!! wow!
i am happy cos i just gotten a 24" LCD screen for my computer :D

this morning while walking in to work with my housemate...
i reminded her that i'm going to a friend's for dinner tonight...
and i've swapped the bag i've been using for the past couple of weeks...
to another one, so i can go straight to dinner and look less "student scruff"...
about halfway through the walk, she turned round and asked...
"hey you're using a different bag today - what's the occasion?"...
lol, i couldn't stop laughing and she blamed the coffee for not kicking in yet earlier...

wooooooooooohooooooooooo and i'm counting my blessings!
this morning started a little rough, re some work issue etc...
but it's ok, that's setbacks that everyone has, on a day to day basis...
plus i'm going to see my friends this evening (so major yay)...
anyway, it's tim's (a colleague) birthday today so we had a wee celebration...
noticing that everyone is present for a change, i asked for a friend...
to help take a lab group picture so yay, now we have a proper lab picture... :)
still remembering and looking forward to dinner this evening...
as the day progresses, work thing seems to be under control somewhat...
although i still have a lot to do, and i do worry a bit of my boss' reaction...
surprisingly, not only he was happy with how everything is going...
he had also just ok-ed me to go to a conference in iowa city!!!! OMG!!

i'm happy today...cause..i dont have to go to work for one month!
and after that one month, when i go back to work, it'll be to do some easy simple stuff, not the hard stressful stuff i've been dealing with the past few months.
and at the end of this month too..i'll still collect my salary..and hopefully a bonus to boot!
i am a little scared about the day after tomorrow tho..
congrats lil!
wow cxtreme! so where are you going for your holiday?
i am happy bcos i submitted two assignments and did a presentation yesterday evening on time (and on the last legs of my adrenaline). i only had four hours' sleep on tuesday nite and none till last nite.

that's scary, for a doctor to not detect what is there...
i don't know, sometimes could it be faulty equipment..?
i'm wondering because someone i know told me of this...
that when she went for a check, ultrasound revealed everything seem normal etc...
when the problem continued, she decided to seek for second opinion...
a laparoscopy result showed she had a missing (non-life threatening) organ...
she was totally puzzled - how did the ultrasound detect something that was not there..?
we've tried to come up with different theories and concluded on faulty equipment...
she didn't want to go back to the first doctor either, to ask for an explation...
oh well... on the happy news front - possible US forummers meet up!!!
details not quite ironed out yet, but it has got to do with my conference trip...
as i'm going to iowa and therefore close enough to sila, i'm planning to visit...
and dino will most likely be flying in too, so that'll be absolutely awesome!
it'll be short visit if this takes place, just literally over 2 days...
afterall the main reason i'm travelling is for work, not exactly holidays... ;)

Amazing! You know this story is so like mine... that its scary... My first baby in 96. I was being followed up by private gyne. He did scans and once he told me to lie more often on my side.... Around 20 something weeks since we were going to go to America, my colleague suggested that I go for a abnormality scan... and the results came back, no kidneys no liquor... I was so shocked and called my gyne. He had not mentioned it at all. Then he told me the same thing, but I wonder why he did not want to tell me earlier..... So we went to UH for a 2nd/3rd opinion and scan and same thing, no kidneys and no liquor. Since, that condition is incompatible with life, I had termination of pregnancy at 26 weeks and at delivery, no liqour. Next time around, in 2000 when I saw the scan and baby swimming in liquor and they told me the kidneys are there, I cried for joy.
How can the fetomaternal specialist make that mistake? It's easy to see liquor no? It's black... now i know... my first baby was grey and no black at all. Good for you, Dr Alf.

Irony....this patient had multiple medical problems....and naturally she was seen few times lioa......the liquor demised around this time but previous scan didn't mention anything which is about 6 weeks ago.....
Yalor... how come ah? Dem scary-lah. :squeeze:
Me also surprise leh......b4 my scanning in my mind......poor baby....terminator gonna scan U and take your life!!!! But first impression...hei....this baby having bladder lah........

We usually able to diagnose this condition after 16 weeks.......I had missed one at 16 weeks.....but the scanning resolution was so bad....that I requested her to come back at 18 weeks.....and sure enough.....absent liqour......absent both kidney......She had TOP in KL.....Feto maternal do make mistake.......but funny thing is he actually cannot see the kidney and bladder......doppler of renal arteries also show non.........funny but my doppler I was able to show the branching of the vessels from abdominal aorta..... Final diagnosis which I refer her to Hospital Ipoh......normal fetus with minimal liquor......cause by premature rupture of membrane!!!!:( Risky pregnancy if no further infection this baby will be delivered at 34weeks!!!

Can u pls PM me the recipe???
Oyster Omelette (from Kuali on line, malaysian star news and modified) more southern style, definitely, not sitiawan style
Ingredients (serves 4)
# 1 jar fresh oyster (6 large ones about 1/2 lb) or 30 small ones
# 110g sweet potato flour or tapioca flour
# 250ml water (this ratio is important... i suggest you weigh it)
# 1 tsp salt
# 2 large eggs, we use more... 8
# 2 tbsp chopped spring onions and cilantro
# 4 tbsp oil
# 1 tsp soya sauce
Ground ingredients (well combined):
# 3 cloves garlic
# 2 shallots
# 1 tbsp chilli paste
# A dash of pepper
Method
Soak oysters in water. Mix sweet potato flour, salt and water into a thin runny batter and leave aside. Heat oil in a non-stick wok or pan.
Scoop out two ladles of batter onto the wok. Give a quick stir and crack in the eggs one at a time. Stir quickly, then push cooked batter to the side of the wok.
Add 2 tbsp oil to the wok; add ground ingredients and saute well. Add in oysters. Cook for a minute and combine the egg and sweet potato flour batter together with the oysters.
Add pepper and sprinkle with chopped spring onions and chives. Give it a stir, then dish out and serve with chilli garlic sauce.
happy trying....

just an update on kelvin (sorry for hijacking this thread if this post is not relevant!)
- kelvin is happy that he has no diet restrictions now, so feel free to bring him coke, BBQ pork (bak kwa), moon cakes and whatever food that you think he would like when you visit him in ward 43 bed 14. not sure whether hospitals allow durian though
he should be discharged on friday

Here's what I googled...
UV light can cause the scar to be more obvious
especially for keloids & to some extent hypertrophic
scars. Smoking (whether 1st or 2nd hand) will lengthen
the period by 2 to 3 times. Patients with newly formed
scars have a higher chance of keloids formation if they
ingest food or soup cooked with ingredient of
Snakehead fish.
http://www.fmshk.org/database/articles/mbdrmktung.pdf
That's what I heard too... ikan haruan although good for healing, can cause excessive tissue formation...thus result in keloid scar.
Aiseh Kelvin..no need to worry about scar laa. The scar will give you an interesting story to show and tell.
You can even use it to remind your cousin everytime.
Kelvin, I'll bring coke over when I visit you. You want Diet Coke or regular?:D
Glad you're doing well.

i guess so, so now i have a manly scar to show off too! haha...
my aunt recommends rubbing some bio oil for keloids, and the plastic surgeon gave me dermatix to apply which seems to work quite alright
my relatives + mom worry that kelvin will seem less attractive to girls after having such a scar..... the surgeon promised that he will make a nice neat cut though.. not like the "mercedes benz" scar that my cousin will have

I visited Kelvin just now ... didn't bring any coke though.:D
Kelvin is doing and looking good, but he looks bored. He was fiddling with his iphone when I got there.
For such a major surgery, he's recovering extremely well, I must say.
If i hadn't known, I wouldn't have guessed he just had an operation just 3 days ago. He could move and sit up and talk like normal.
Take care, Kelvin, and get well soon.

just an update this morning - kelvin will be discharged today, and my mom has travelled down from sitiawan to keep an eye on him and his scar. will keep you all posted! (maybe take pictures of his scar if you wanna see!!)
*update*
kelvin's at home now resting. his scar is looking quite alright, even though he says its scary to actually see the individual stitches while showering
he has to bend over while walking and standing, i think the scar is causing some tightness and pain around the area

It will be tight and itchy for a while. There is a cream out there that you can use to ease it, but talk to the doc and get him to prescribe it.

the funniest thing is, both the doc and dietitian has declared that kelvin can eat anything he wants... ANYTHING
but then my mom + grandma + grandaunt have now restricted his diet - he can't eat eggs, chicken, most seafood (prawns, crab, sotong, some types of fish). so that basically leaves durian, pork, mutton and BEEF
i think they will feed him 3 sticks of carrot every day...

hi guys, thanks for all your wishes and prayers! but i'm not done with u yet!! i'm currently at home recuperating after the surgery, but the next stage will be to ensure that there is no complication such as infection arising from the surgery, this we will know in the next week or two. also do keep sage in your prayers. he is still in icu learning to adapt to the new organ and hopefully accept the organ fully.
its kind of strange how in 4 days so much thing could change. i was wheeled into the OT on sunday at 7am and today at 12noon i was already walking out of the ward. on sunday night i was feeling slight feverish
bad news is that the lab tested me positive for MRSA. no freakin idea where taht came from so i can't visit my cousin for a while lest i infect him too and he's in a much more fragile state.
thanks to SS that came to visit me yesterday. the grapes were yummy! and for the rest of u for keeping us in our thoughts.
as to the ban on food..it'll last about a week i think (as long as my mom is here with me hehehe) but here's the other part of it..kwimango has to eat the same stuff that i do too hahaha!! but i dont like being treated like woman out of confinement.
din really measure the scar. it's an inverse L down 2/3 of my chest and across the right side of the belly..me thinks it'll be about 60-70cm long...

that's what i was about to say...
recently there was a report abt how ppl can catch the most resistant bacteria in surgical wards in five-star private hospitals here in sydney
it is bcos the bacteria have evolved and developed immunity to the strong sterilisation procedures so whatever is left surviving is very very 'keng'

I was walking that way after both my c sec op when i delivered
my gals. Mainly it's b'cos of the pain. Bending, cause less pain
while walking/standing. But the more u walk, the faster the wound
heals.

i stand corrected...just took a tape measure to measure
it's 15cm down and 20cm across....so it's about 35cm...account for the round contours of my belly :p maybe the total length is about 40cm.

it's awesome, because that means i get to have a short trip there...
and meet up with my friend mike (and his gf amy) who'll be there on hols...
mike is from france but he's currently living in oz, so it's not easy to arrange to see him...
