This is the first time I watched the Phantom of the Opera...so it's the only version I have ever watched. But the two songs that I like best in the show, I have heard many times before. I think the guy who plays the phantom really sings very well...no wonder Christine was mesmerized.;)

yea, the song is more contemporary, probably, Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the song just for her. As for the movie, i think those songs are more classical, therefore, i think, she just refrained from singing it in the movie, to avoid comparisons from the actual stage perfomers? just a thought! :)

hehe, should read what my friend said about Phantom of The Opera. he's a musical fan, so he knows what he talks about. ex ACS IPOH Interact President.
let me just attach the review below. sorry it's kinda long.
Assumptions:
- You have seen the movie
- You know I'm a musical freak
- You sense that this will be long, so read this only when you have like 3
hours to spare
- You foresee that you will have not the slightest clue as to what I'm
babbling about... but READ ON anyway! ;P
My comments:
1. This musical actually germinated 14 years ago, when Andrew Lloyd Webber
(ALW) and Joel Schumacher (JS) wanted to make a movie with the original
west end stars (namely Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman). But you see,
Sarah and ALW were married then... and were in the process of 'un-marrying'
(divorce-lah) - then the project got shelved until recently. So tah dah -
the movie.
2. To watch this movie, one would have to be objective, and not succumb to
ill-advised tendencies to compare with the stage version.
3. Emmy Rossum (ER) got to play the lead role of Christine Daae. She was
just 16 when the filming began. Now she's 17. Her background of performing
at the Met in her younger days actually (some claimed) helped in this
demanding singing role. I really have no idea why she got nominated for a
Golden Globe. Thanks to her bosom, perhaps? Definitely not her acting - she
must have burnt countless gallons of midnight oil perfecting the 3 facial
expressions she has : of fear, of awe, of love (which in the end look alike
anyway). Not only that, she also has that
Malaysian-asleep-on-the-Transnasional-bus look : y'know - the one where the
mouth is always slightly apart (1.21 inches to be exact) THROUGHOUT the
movie! As any M'sian would tell her - 'Ha, nanti lalat masuk, baru tau!'.
Her 'Think of me' is particularly nauseating... She looks like a singing
Barbie, and other than her heaving bosom, there is nothing much to draw
from her countenance, or her voice. And after 10 minutes of seeing her,
you'd be like 'Enough of that doe-eyed
4. Gerard Butler (GB) played the titular role - the Phantom. I actually
like his acting (contrary to popular view). I think he plays the
angst-ridden, love-deprived, jealousy-driven, psychologically-scarred
phantom pretty well. Though his malformed portion of the face seems a teeny
bit too unfrightening. Heck, even the Fab 5 can give him a makeover and
turn him into a stud (which 80% of his face shows that he is). Sheesh. A
bit unreal leh. Anyway, his voice shows his weak spot. His rendition of
Music Of The Night is bad, mainly because his falsetto stumbles during the
high B flat (... music start to SOAR...). And while he is great when he's
speaking- he kinda blows it when he sings. Again, his words are not
suffused with emotion and meaning - something so essential in a musical.
5. Patrick Wilson (PW) as Raoul was a tad weak. His singing is impressive,
no doubt (after all, he's a Broadway veteran - Oklahoma! and The Full
Monty). But it's a pretty undemanding role, to start with. His acting is
unconvincing - I mean, he loves Christine? Nope, didn't feel any
electricity there. It'll be difficult for those who have watched Angels In
America to reconcile PW with the image of the swashbuckling Viscount Raould
de Chagny here. Cos in Angels In America, PW plays a most convincing role
as a closet gay Mormon... After seeing the movie, it's kinda hard to
imagine PW as a heterosexual man who digs women.
6. Minnie Driver (MD) as Carlotta steals the show. I guess these roles are
fun, and probably easier to play - since this character is flamboyant and
larger-than-life. She's the only one who doesn't sing. Yup - the operatic
parts are dubbed. But she does dig into her role with relish.
7. Gilles Andre and Richard Firmin, as the bumbling new managers are a hoot
to watch. Of course, credit has to be given to the 'Notes' deliciously
crafted lycrics and tune - which now comes across as a comical interlude
(rather than the ominous scene I imagined).
8. Mme Giry and Meg Giry - underutlized. Best left forgotten. Meg is, well,
totally unnecessary, in fact - other than to sing the short 'Where in the
world have you been hiding? Really you were perfect!' in Angel of Music.
And Mme Giry and her solo French accent. I mean, this show is set in
France, with the cast speaking clipped British accents (other than Carlotta
- in her over-the-top Italian accent)... so why Mme Giry in French? Hmm...
Hokay, this is just the inputs on the actors. The following review will be
on the scenes in the movie.

Part II of the Review. Hope you guys enjoy it. Sorry again that it's long.
Asumptions:
- You have read my first review on the actors.
- You cannot get enough of POTO.
- You have difficulty breathing and concentration on work is minimal
because you are anxiously waiting for this review.
Well, wait no more!
My comments on the et cetera (everything else except the leads):
1. The opening sequence is captured beautifully... from the photo to
black-and-white... bringing us to the familiar auction taking place. And
the 'Some illumination please!' followed by a gradual transition to a
coloured scence is simply awesome.
2. Purists would cry murder over the blatant use of 'sing-speak' - talking
when they should be singing. For example when Raoul enters Christine's
chambers - 'Litlle Lotte... of goblins and of shoes and of...' It's sung
lah... Or the part when the Phantom appears in the mirror, and Raoul is
banging the door 'Who's is that voice? Who is that in there?' is another
instance. Even Andre and Firmin's 'Notes' experiences a momentary lapse. Or
Mme Giry's - 'Joseph Buquet, hold your tongue... burn you with the heat of
his eyes' - quite loses its malice because it is spoken not hissed out in
tune. For me, it's not a main gripe.
3. The two most mysterious and sensuous scenes SHOULD be during 'Phantom of
the Opera' -POTO (gondola across the lake) and 'Music of The Night'- MOTN.
Gawd, POTO is supposed to be enchanting - with the highlight of Christine
reaching the higher octaves effortlessly under the prompting of the
Phantom. Now it's turned into a stupid flight down the stairs and onto the
boat (ho hum). On stage, it concludes with a dramatic flourish as Christine
faints into the Phantom's arms. MOTN should be sensuous and seductive.
Horror of horrors, Schumacher turned it into a Chinese feast (with the
millions of candles burning), and the lamest camera angles ever taken.
Heck, even when the camera pans left to right, you can actually see the
shadow of the camera! It's that bad. It is just yawn-inducing. Surely they
can come up with something better than standing, and singing, and sweeping
arm gestures. Like -duh! - this is not a stage, if you hadn't noticed...
4. 'All I Ask Of You' AIAOY - is a pale attempt at doing Moulin Rouge's
captivating romantic sequences that incorporate singing at the top of a
building with the Parisian backdrop. I kinda wished that can can dancers or
even better, Nicole Kidman, would appear and save this miserable excuse for
a love song. I'd rather listen to Cliff Richard's version than cringe
through the scene - Ha ha, a bit 'over' there.
5. 'Masquerade' - supposed to be the show-stopper for the stage ends up
pretty drab. I mean, for better direction of colourful costumes and
imaginative dance movements - again, Moulin Rouge emerges tops. It is quite
funny when you see the people on the balustrade with the silver/gold fans
doing some 'Asmaradana' -Puteri Gunung Ledang moves. And the Phantom in the
awful red two-sizes-too-small uniform! (PS notice that he still has
lustrous hair and beautiful skin even on the right side of his face - hmm,
stage make up?).
6. Then the chandelier falls in totally another scene. For dramatic effect,
I think. It should fall during the ballet scene, and not during the staging
of Don Juan Triumphant. On another matter - 'The Point of No Return' is
actually an amazing piece, as it brings discordant harmonies to another
level altogether. For example G/Am! It's like having the G chord on an A
minor base! But Lloyed Webber has unabashedly used this musical theme again
and again (in Requiem, and also in The Beautiful Game).
7. The thing about stage musicals is that you can suspend your logic for a
moment, but for a movie - many inconsistencies will stand out glaringly.
For example - surely, when Joseph Buquet was killed, a police investigation
should be started? But NO... they happily forget the whole thing and sing
Masquerade. Or Raoul (a Viscount, member of the royal family!) guarding
Christine as she sleeps. Er, bawa dia balik tidur lah, budak! Atau upah
orang lain lah. Or the amount of candles and candles and candles in the
Phantom's lair. Like, he most probably spends all of his 20,000 francs on
candles alone (and nice clothes, obviously). Tak busuk ke? Maybe
aromatherapy kind - with ylang ylang. Ha ha. Or how come no rats at his
place? The scented candles scare them all away?
8. And 'Prima Donna'... a musical masterpiece, due to its layered parts and
splendid arrangement has several parts removed (or was it because the sound
system of the cinema was not good enough?). Raoul has some cool
countermelodies in the last few lines that I did not catch. A waste,
actually. The scene with Carlotta refusing chocolates, and jewellery is
amateurish - and she knows it.
9. And the penulatimate scene, where Raoul so bravely goes after his lover,
only to be so easily overcome and tied to the iron bars. And even as he
chokes, he still manages to sing! This is a guaranteed chuckle-inducer.
Surely Sir Lloyd Webber saw this coming! The cinemaI was in really lapped
this scene up - laughter and merriment everywhere! And Schumacher had to
have the cheap scene : hero falls into a door trap, then in a moment of
dorwning agony, the hero valiantly escapes. Why why why?
10. Sadly, lighting is not used to its max effect here. Notice that
everything seems overly bright? Wonder why... Even in the lair, it's a tad
too much of a warm and golden glow. Quite cosy actually, with the plush
drapes and cushions. Wonder how he manages to prevent mold or fungus from
forming.
11. The scene which shows Mme Giry saving the Phantom from the 'freak show'
a la The Elephant Man is a totally new thread to the story. This was not in
the stage version nor the original Gaston Leroux book (which actually gave
the Phantom a name - Erik). Too bad, cos in the musical - it's the mystery
of the Phantom's origins that makes him so enigmatic - fearsome yet
pitiful.
Oklah... keep my comments to 10 only. But I really like the beginning and
the ending... Thought that it was a cool ending... (and that's why
POTO-stage has both the mask and the rose on the design). But do stay till
the end to listen to 'Learn to be Lonely' the new song Webber and Hart
wrote for the movie. Originally, the Phantom was supposed to sing it... but
Schumacher cut it out, and in the end it's included in the credits. But
it'll be difficult trying to catch the tune, since the moment the movie
ends, everyone will scramble out immediately. Ha ha. Thanks to those who
wrote back on your opinions. If you wanna know more, just ask me! I ahve
lots more tidbits up my sleeves - just dun wanna bore you...
As for me, will definitely catch it again - just for the sake of it.

aha! finally a thread which i can participate in which has something i am passionate about.
saw POTO and gotta say i loved it very much.
as compared to the original west end played on stage, i must say i am duly impressed, as a large part of the dialogue has been adapted to the silver screen. the first part during the auction, my hairs were standing on ends as i was temporarily brought back to the time i saw the musical live. very nice indeed!
story wise, if you have not seen the live musical, you are not going to miss out on much by watching this movie. in fact, the movie version tells the story better. in the original play you really had to listen to the words very carefully in order to maintain the flow of the story.
casting wise, i think all the characters were picked well. one would expect the phantom to have a more commanding voice, more so than raoul, but i beg to differ. the phantom was gifted in the arts but he was not necessarily a good singer. but the parts he sang, he sang it with SO much passion and that compensated for his lesser singing qualities. that gave him a slight vulnerability to his character which i think was much needed.
raoul shocked me. last time i saw him he was playing a gay lawyer in Angels in America... i must say he is good too.
dun compare any of them to crawford, brightman or ball la... those guys are freaks man! haha :D
overall the players created a perfect balance and i don;t think JS and ALW could have done any better.
compared to other movies in this genre, i must put POTO on top, followed by moulin rouge, then evita and finally chicago

personally, i enjoyed watching POTO, as my knowledge to musicals is almost zero, so anything that moves and sings is already better than everyday. however, i must admit i agree with some of my friend's review, with the Phantom's voice a bit weak when he appears on screen, but fairly good when he's singing to Christine without him appearing. Emma Rossum does a fair Christine, but lacking some acting skills. sometimes i can't differentiate whether she loves Phantom or Raoul. she looks the same everytime her eyes meet theirs. maybe she compensates with her bosom and cleavage. Raoul is not too bad either, but voice is not that strong. all in all, i like the colours in it. certainly stirs up interest for non-musical inclined people, but for hard-cores, i guess my friend's review says it all.

y tu mama tambien was very profane (and yet, with a touch of profound as well). the equivalent of their sentences in english would be:
"Where the bleep bleep bleep is the bleeping bleep thing i bleeping asked you for earlier, bleep?"
"Bleeeeep lah. You have to bleeping wait, bleep"
"Bleeeep ei. How bleeping bleep long must i bleeping wait? i bleeping asked you for the bleepety bleep thing bleeping last bleeping week"

lilian! red handed!!! :D
i gave another clue in anagrams, but i suppose you must be off enjoying your friday night.
for some reason, i have always had a fondness for John Cusack and thought he was really funny in High Fidelity (which, incidentally started out as an awesome book!!). also loved the 2 movies adapted from books written by Nick Hornby, Fever Pitch (the brit version with colin firth and not the american version just filmed in boston - that one not out yet although i will be in line to watch it), and About a Boy. all these films have such great soundtracks as well...
my favourite comedy, Get Shorty.
that's a good one, dream. also good is Out of Sight with clooney and j lo. both are based on novels by elmore leonard. so Out of Sight is in sort of the same vein as Get Shorty.

I have the 5-issue Sin City comic "The Big Fat Kill". Some of the imagery in the trailer is RIGHT OFF the pages of the comic, especially with Miho throwing her shuriken and jumping down with her katana, and the CGI cars jumping over the streets, and Dwight slamming Big Jack Rafferty's head into the toilet bowl he just pissed in. Gave me the willies.
Yeah.....its literally watching your graphic novel!!!! Drool!!!!

Ooh... think I better grab the book and read it before watching the show. Watching other people's interpretations of the characters and events usually spoils the imagination and individual interpretation that comes with reading the book without any influence.
Like when I read Anne of Green Gables after watching it on TV, I can't help picturing the main characters as they look in the show...they would've look a lot better if they were left to my imagination.;)
Hmm...I wonder if anybody will make the Dragonlance Chronicles into movies anytime soon...

i tend to go for one or another i.e. either the movie or the book... the exception so far being harry potter...
i'd leave the stuff i read in book to my imagination... often they are spoilt by movies...
i'd leave the stuff i see in movie as it is... especially if i like it, as i don't want to find they leave out such and such, or why wasn't X shown to match description in book etc...

just came back from watching "a series of unfortunate event"... it was really entertaining, well plotted and kinda adventurous... and the youngest baby is the coolest baby ever! she's just so sweet.... :) jim carey played his character well, so well that i hate him now for being such a horrible guardian to the kids... worth watching.... a bit of tear jerker at the end, but i think you'll enjoy it if you see it... :)
i keep watching replays of The Last Samurai on the movie channels :) and keep getting depressed at all the unnecessary deaths at the end. but like a deer in headlights, i can't look away!

oh, you don't like di caprio either!! thank god... someone to share my sentiment... i've always avoided his movies too... was actually going to see another movie but sold out so my friends suggested this one mah... the ending part ah, like what you know of the real howard hughes, gone mental with his obsessive-compulsive behaviour lor...

ah, i see. i want to see sideways. will probably go this weekend. i hate actors who don't/can't act. what's the point? i guess that why i stick to comedy or romance nowadays. no need to act. i hate di caprio, brad pitt, keanu, clooney - all cannot act. mainly trade on their looks. but johnny depp is a whole different story. he's the most brilliant actor of his generation!

well, i think that's a bit prejudice.. even i had to admit that dicaprio is good in this movie... i agree though the others are usually there as eye candies.... ;)
for some strange reason (maybe due to my hectic workload at the moment), feel like rubbish type of movies, just something entertaining... currently on the list: ocean's twelve (a gathering of "treats") and the whatever dancing movie with richard gere and j-lo in it...

NO!!!! i've seen ocean's - it's not that good...probably even elektra would be more fun...and gere and j-lo - i don't know what to say about that. i'm speechless...

I dislike DiCaprio because he doesn't age... but you have to admit he's a bloody good actor for his age. He was brilliant in Basketball diaries and he was quite good in Catch Me If You Can... That said, he looks like a 12-year old girl.

I saw SAW over the weekend... promising premise let down by bad acting. That aussie fella keeps forgetting he should talk like an american in a Hollywood production. Not up to my expectation... but entertaining though.
I saw Signs on astro recently for the first time... quite good. Night Shyamalan is a real hitchcock fan...

paul giamatti is cool! if you like him you should definitely watch American Splendor. it is a strange but good little movie! :D

i agree dream - he does look too damn young and i feel geli about women over 14 who think he's hot. :D
i almost stopped watching movies where he was in it because Titanic totally turned me against him but i re-watched What's Eating Gilbert Grape the other day and realize that i'd forgotten what a good actor he is! euj, you should watch this as Johnny Depp is also in it. it is such a good movie!

My fav hollywood actor from the new generation is Edward Norton... liked him since American History X. I want to see another actor do that neo-nazi role and then go on and play the role he did in Fight Club. That's what I call versatile...
My fav all time actors Al Pacino and Marlon Brando

Actually coming to think of it, the best actor of their generation has to be tie between Depp and Norton. I like them both.

American History X was so gripping. i agree with dream! and he was really good in Fight Club oso. i saw 25th Hour, and it was an OK movie but not great, but not bad either...

i guess i prefer depp cos i'm not into violence except in heroic movies like braveheart and i prefer quirky, interesting plots...and happy/inspiring endings... :)
