Let's talk about everything related to Hockchew & Kutien, like it's cuisine, it's people, it's language, songs, history, it's city Fuzhou/Sitiawan/Sibu and etc, etc. To start off, here is my favourite song that I grew up listening to, 我在汝左右 Nguai kak nue jor riu (I'm by your side) which now I translate it to Hockchew/Kutien language. Well this song is also our minister Dr Ng Yen Yen's favourite song!

The song 玫瑰玫瑰我爱汝 Mui-kui, mui-kui nguai ai nue (Rose, rose I love you) is a favourite classic song of many people, it's original version which is in Mandarin was sang by 姚莉 iu Li in the '40s. The song 第二春 Tae ni choong (The second spring) is one of the most famous classic mandarin song. Like the song 玫瑰玫瑰我爱汝 Mui-kui, mui-kui nguai ai nue (Rose, rose I love you), it was also written by master songwriter 姚敏 iu Meeng. The original 第二春 Tae ni choong song was recorded by 董佩佩 Terng Pui Pui in the 1950's. 第二春 Tae ni choong song was likely the second classic mandarin song after 玫瑰玫瑰我爱汝 Mui-kui, mui-kui nguai ai nue to be successfully recorded in English version as "The ding dong song" by Tsai Chin 周采芹 Chiu Tiek Chang in 1959. The popularity of this song reached its peak when the bilingual English/Mandarin version Ding dong song/第二春 was recorded by Rebecca Pan 潘迪华 Poong Tik Hua in the early 1960's. The 第二春 mandarin lyrics is beautiful & meaningful, 第二春 has a figurative meaning of "second youth". The English version, The ding dong song's lyrics is plain silly!

There are quite many Foochow restaurants in Sitiawan & Ayer Tawar but I don't really know which are the good ones. You can check out this thread where CC introduced a restaurant in Simpang Dua, Sitiawan.

Sibu Foochows are predominantly Min Chiang people (they do share fundamental root Foochow words but their intonation is quite uniquely different - unlike Hockchews, Hockchiangs and Kutiens in Manjung......but I can still manage to understand part of their conversation tho' - only if fundamental words are used - by the way, Sibu also has quite a sizable Kutien population too....most of whom I should be able to converse with......:D

The singer was interviewed over AiFM not long after he sang this pop Foochow song... apparently he took some Foochow lessons from an old Foochow veteran before recording the song !
