The 2008 summer Olympics are about to start. Are there any events you are looking forward to?

I can't wait for:
Athletics - the greatly hyped men's 100m showdown with Powell, Bolt and Gay
Cycling - can the Great Britain track cycling team really sweep the board or will they get pegged back by the Germans, Australians, Dutch and everyone else? Will Nicole Cook finally win an Olympic medal?
Sailing - can Ben Ainslie get his 3rd Olympic gold? Will the British Yngling girls come good? Will Qingdao ever be free of blue green algae? :p

And some other imponderables:

Team USA decided to bring all their own food, drinks, cooks and cooking equipment. Who can they blame when they get stomach ache? :h:

How many pingat can MALAYSIA win, and in which sports? MALAYSIA BOLEH KAH???

They can blame the air. China is going through great measures to clean up their super polluted air. Stopping the factories, stopping the car usage, chasing non Beijing occupants out from Beijing etc...I hope they can be ready in time for the Olympics. This is causing a lot of inconveniences for a lot of biz and people dealing with China already.

An awesome, spectacular show by the Chinese. Live up to my expectation of a great show !

The show reflected the creativity, organisation skills, discipline, dedication, tenacity, teamwork and strong financial resources of the Chinese people.

The show brought to life the history and culture of a great civilisation.

I thought the display of the huge Admiral Cheng Ho's fleets that rule the 7 seas was really impressive. That was about the last of China's great achievement before it closed it’s doors to the world 600 years ago.

Modern China really begun when the communist revolution in 1949 overthrew a feudal system that was rotten to the core and chased out the imperialist forces that were literally eating up China. Before the revolution, China was known as the sick man of Asia, which is an apt moniker as almost all its adult male population were addicted to opium and the economy was at a standstill with hyperinflation.

The introduction of universal education, promotion of women emancipation and reform of the land policies were the impetus that revitalized China. The momentum of change accelerated when Teng Xiaoping opened China to the world in 1978. Over the last 30 odd years China has experienced tremendous growth and it’s rapidly regaining its position as a respected nation in the world again. Most importantly, China’s teeming population now have proper shelter, are well clothed and have enough to eat. These basic human rights to shelter, cloth and food... are still being denied to the vast majority of the people in the Third World.

The real lessons we can learn from China's history are; for a country, it's important to adopt an open door policy and for a person, its important to have an open mind.

OK, now back to topic: Watch out Cheng Chu Sian, Ahmad Marbawi Sulaiman and Wan Khalmizan Ibrahim - tomorrow they shall be into the repechage for the semis spot in the recurve team event of archery (for MEN). M'sia is now ranked no. 4 in the world and are now lying no.3 in the Olympics points to date, tailing Ukraine by a mere 5 points or so.....aku doakan mereka ni masuk final dapat at least perak :D

Sad thingie that Chin Eei Hui & Wong Pei Tty is out of the women's badminton doubles comp.....and Daniel Bego has broken a Malaysian record only to see himself bundled out of the finals of his event.....

Wong Mew Choo is into women's singles Quarterfinals - dunno who she is gonna meet, tomorrow, Chong Wei meets Ronald Susilo and as for Choong Hann, I hope he can trash Taufik Hidayat off his attitude

I think October is about the best time to visit Beijing. Weather wise it would be just nice for thin skinned tropical people like us. Autumn is the time when fruits ripen, so you can get to enjoy fresh fruits which you can purchase from the street hawkers.

And.. you would get to visit the Olympic sites without the crowd and also without competition on lah ..:laugh: !!

Will you be there as a tourist or going there for a performance ??

I went for a 7-day tour of Beijing 10 years ago. As with my normal practise, I'll scribble some notes of my travel. I managed to retrieve my travel notes and here are more impression of Beijing :

IMPRESSION OF BEIJING - APRIL 1998

1. Fairly clean, especially tourist attraction areas. Many cleaners can be seen busy picking up and clearing rubbish left behind by tourists.

2. Main mode of transport is the bicycle. There are 8 Million bicycles in Beijing and there are special lanes for bicycles along side the Expressway. The bicycle lanes about 4m wide are separated from the Expressway by a green reserve planted with trees and flowers.

3. There are very few motorbikes in Beijing as sale of motorbikes is prohibited. The reason being to reduce fatal accidents and pollution.

4. The road system is fairly well planned and developed. There are 4 layers of ring roads around Beijing, and the 5 outer ring road is being constructed. There are no traffic lights on these ring roads. All the intersection and junctions along these ring roads have multi-tier flyovers or interchange.

5. There are many vehicles on the road. Most are Gov't owned or taxis

6. River/canals banks are planted with trees and flowers or have been converted to parks

7. The people are well dressed. Women are quite fashion conscious. Spotted some girls with false eye lashes. Saw only one pregnant woman and 2 beggars in 7 days.

8. The greatness and grandeur of the Chinese history and culture can be seen from the many impressive ancient buildings, the level of skills and command of language, art and craft of the people.

9. The people speak very beautiful Chinese, with intonation and sprinkles of idioms in their normal daily conversation.

10. Tourism is big business in China.

11. Beijing has 99 Universities and Colleges

12. Food is plentiful with many street traders and hawkers. Signs of private enterprise everywhere.

13 Very few petrol stations. Petrol price Y 2.20 per liter (about the same as Malaysia). Diesel Y2.00 per liter (more expensive)

14. Pollution is a problem. Main sources; vehicle exhaust, burning of coal and dust storm churned up by the north wind blowing over the Gobi desert north of Beijing esp. during the spring season

15. Hotel TV has 27 stations. Central, provinces, Hong Kong and Star TV (Satellite). All kind of interesting programme; Opera, Sport, Science, Agriculture, Soap (present and historical), documentary, social etc

16 Social issues such as unemployment etc. are widely discussed in the press and TV. People talk quite freely and village heads are elected.

17. The parks are quite well used for cultural and recreation activities like; social dancing, calligraphy, martial art practises and exercising.

If you're interested to read my write-up of the places I toured in Beijing please pm me.

I'm sure Beijing has undergone much changes over the last 10 years ! So what I wrote may not be true anymore.

Forget about the TV broadcast. This is even better. Watch whenever you want in high definition, live or recorded. And not dictacted by the station of which games they are broadcasting.

E.g. badminton: http://www.nbcolympics.com/badminton/index.html

In US, # of badminton games broadcast on TV station = 0.
Watch whichever game, and whenever over the internet in Hi Def = priceless :)

Even better if you download Silverlight: http://www.nbcolympics.com/silverlight/index.html

Only caveat: needs broadband.

Stop press:
1)Archery team MUFFED their own medal chances kau-kau only to trail Italy by merely 5 points in their quarterfinal elimination bout :crying: what more Italy eventually masuk finals only to lose NARROWLY to South Korea........

2)Wong Choong Hann and Lee Chong Wei are through to the 3rd round after beating defending Olympic champ Taufik H (padan muka!!!) and Ronald Susilo respectively. Chong Wei might have an easier opponent compared to WCH in their bouts tomoro, so better we pray hard that they don't crumble under tremendous pressure lerr.......

3)Wong Mew Choo is THROUGH to the quarterfinals (likely to meet China's Lu Lan) after beating 2 angmoh opponents including Bulgaria's Petya Nedtelcheva in straight games.

4) CTF-LWW & KKK-TBH start out in their men's doubles golden quest tomoro evening after dinner and awaiting them is definitely a TRUE test of FIRE BAPTISM, so better pray hard they don't crumble under tremendous pressure as well lerr.......

5) In a few more days, the individual Men's archery event will witness the 3 Malaysians getting themselves to become their opponents' punching bags again......IF THEY DON'T PULL UP THEIR SOCKS HIGH ENUFF

Anson F-Clef
08-11-2008, 11:02 PM
6) CTF's girlfriend/fiance, Zhang Jiewen and her women's doubles partner (they are reigning Olympic women's doubles champs) got crushed by a Japanese pair in the quarterfinals.....

7) Tine Rasmussen and Wang Chen (Hong Kong) have been bundled out by their lower-ranked opponents en route to the women's singles quarterfinals. One player sure needing attention would be Maria Kristin Yulianti who herself scalped two angmohs who are ranked higher than her.....

Exactly what I said about the importance and the need for opening up to the world .... when you'll be exposed to critical comments from around the world, people who will scrutinise every detail and spot light your faults... That's when your blind spots are exposed !!

The Chinese organisers may think it's not such a big deal whereas the western media think it's unethical and some people even commented that it's a con job !!

Well, I hope the Chinese would now look at the matter from the different angle and learn a lesson from it ?? It's part of the learning process in "opening up".

Granted there were some ethical questions in relation to the show ... but my opinion on this matter is that the western media is making a mountain out of a mole hill!

Nevertheless, it does not take away the fact that it was a magnificient great show !

I'll post something about the tremendous effort and techniques used by the 896-member "printing" block team.

I agree with you that it is mole hill story. Don't forget that we have live in many decades of bigger western media lies and worst of all, still never want to admit it. Just like the reasons to invade Iraq by Mr Bushie.... even his right hand man Colin Powell does not agree to his story at UN. What is the right ethics then?

Looking from another way... it is an impressive and well done con job by China.... hahahaha...:laugh:

Yeah well done to the organizing job but the only flaw was the murder of an American tourist which ended up being the assailant from Hangzhou killing himself  stupidity all right.......

BTW it's now down to just Lee Chong Wei in the singles quarterfinals fray against Sony D - the rest were quite teruk cases that got bundled out of Beijing Olympic badminton competition for GOOD......

Strongly agree with u :p And YES, he shall meet Lee Hyun Il later this evening (all bcos BCL did not have enuff killer instincts) but dare not watch the scoreboard but to pray hard that LCW's killer instinct still goes rampaging like no man's biz - that's what LCW n LD's mentality is all about :p

MSIA:

LCW is playing tonight, finals.. !

Apparently 2 of the Msian cyclist are in finals too, if I'm not mistaken.

What happened to Msian rhythmic gymmnasts? They won gold during commonwealth before.. that was such a moment!

AUS:
Stephanie Rice and Liesel Jones are simply awesome!

Lisbeth Trickett, placed too much hope in her. Dunno what happened to her, the world record was hers, yet she only managed to get 4th place in 50m freestyle.

Grant Hackett, apala, world record also his, but got second.

I never know why Ian Thorpe retired ar??

Phelps... man of the Olympic Game 2008!!

lee chong wei certainly crumble when under pressure
this happens before in the world championship 1/2 years ago when it was held in malaysia, and all eyes are on him to get a medal but he lost tamely in the first round
then for the few following super series championship he performed very well and managed to bag a few medals
yesterday is certainly not the usual Leechongwei that i see
his skills are certainly much better than that and his speed is certainly faster than what he shows yesterday
anyway must give him credit for getting a silver

I agree with you LCW not being in his usual mode. Too many errors and repeatedly doing the same errors. Look at how he is during the semifinal match...net play, jumping smash, drop shots all beautifully executed. such contrasting play he put on.

But even if he repeat the same mode against lin dan i would say he still lose because lin dan was at the top of his game. Suprised LCW with a few impressive net plays himself and he was just too fast and strong.

Crowd support was marvellous where i have to turn the volume down because it was just too noisy.

Poor LCW was totally outclassed by Lin Dan... suggest he train harder in badminton .. instead of being led by the nose by the likes of MCA's Ling Hee Long to campaign for Ling during the General election.. Hope LCW will not repeat the same mistake during the up coming MCA election !!

Usian Bolt's performance for the 100m sprint was superb !!

He's fluid running style is so elegant ... and the way he accelerated from the 50m mark leaving the rest of the field trailing was just astonishing ..

If he had not ease off in the last 20 meters...he could have shaved of may be another 0.1 secs ?? The record could have been 9.59 secs !!

He will naturally be the sprinter to watch during the 200m final !

Given his form, he will be racing against the clock rather than against the other competitors ! I'm sure he will secure a double !!

The question is, will he break the world record ??

The current men's world record holder is Michael Johnson, who ran 19.32 s at the 1996 Summer Olympics.

y'know my colig was chatting with a Chinese (as in China) counterpart of ours and he also mentioned that as much as he was proud of LinDan for winning the gold, he said LCW just threw the game away! tsk tsk

HAIL USAIN the SPEEDY GOLIATH & THUNDERBOLT!! World records in 2 blue-riband athletics events in 100m and 200m....next to watch are two Americans in the 400m (one White and the other, Afro-American)....the White one, Jeremy Wariner eventually lost to that Afro-American, LaShawn Merritt.......:p

Elaine Teo kaputted again (she lost in round 1 in Athens 2004) in her Olympic taekwondo bout, round 1, this time against a Turkish girl, and later to a former world champ from US during the repechage stage for bronze medal....only hope left would be Che Chew Chan - let's check Bryan Lomas's performance in the 10-metre platform diving event too............
