I have been having trouble with my PC.. slows down considerably. Do not know how to catch those buggers. Dun even know which buggers are crawling inside my PC.
The only thing I can do is to clean install my PC. Which means tons of house keeping of my data files. :(
ISTbar is a homepage and search hijacking adware. It adds a toolbar to Internet Explorer and displays popup ads that come mainly from porn sites. This adware is distributed by Integrated Search Technologies/CDT Inc. It may also install third-party adware and spyware on the computer. Jeng! Jeng! Jeng!

kamkuey, no need to be so drastic until wanna reinstall la - hah hah
try using adware detection programs la.. a lot of freeware in the market. the one i use is ADAWARE... not 100% failproof but better then nothing.
more importantly please make sure your windows is constantly updated. you can do that at www.windowsupdate.com. this will lock up any backdoors or security loopholes in your operating system

Adware pisses me off to no end.
Last Aidilfitri, I first went to Kelantan. My in-laws computer was riddled with adware & spyware which when purged caused the computer to to catastrophically crash, requiring a HDD format.
Then I went to Sitiawan, where my father's computer was ALSO badly infected by wares to the point that it hijacked IE6.0. We were unable to go anywhere but the webpage that we were automatically directed to all the time. So, I installed Mozilla 1.5, which looks much better than IE6.0 any day and parses HTML beautifully. No problems since.
To everyone who wants to install one of these beautiful "custom search bars" on your browsers, I got one advice for you: DON'T.

I'm using Aluria's Spyware Eliminator - highly rated as one of the most trusted and reliable spyware buster.
Takes care of all adwares and spywares by preventing them from intruding your system in the first place, cleans all the cookies and activex apps from your internet browsers cache and prevents hijacking of your internet browser's homepage.
It costs US$29.99.

believe it or not i just got whacked by another one - this sys32cfg.exe - another 3 hours gone down the drain when i should be studying for tomorrow's exam.
for both cases, i ran adaware and spybot with the latest definitions - but no good. what i finally did was to run hijackthis and go through the individual items in the log one by one... very painful lo...
anyone need help with istsvc.exe and sys32cfg.exe, just give me a shout - i know how they work now.
i better stop using my broadband connection until i get my xp updated and a proper firewall installed.

Internet explorer has a security hole that lets an application hijack your homepage. Everytime that you launch Internet Explorer, it will connect you to an unwanted site. I know Spyware Eliminator takes care of this, not sure whether there is a freeware out there that can do it.

song, i'm sure you pc hijacked oreidi. do yourself a favour by going to http://www.download.com and download the latest copy of adaware. install it on your computer and run it. request it to download the latest definition file and perform a scan - you'd be very surprised at how many of those bastards are on your machine.
some of the more sophisticated ones need pro help - but you should be able to catch most of them using adaware.

Aiseh ppl. If you are using Win XP, than install Service Pack 2. If not on XP, than upgrade to XP. I dont have such problems anymore. Yippee.....
I have switch browsers to Firefox(Mozilla) and i tell you, its damn good. It reduce your probabality of catching adware by almost 80%. Try it...you'll not regret it.

 Never again I will install Service Pack 2. My notebook could not even start up (NOT EVEN SAFE MODE OR RECOVERY MODE) after restarting. Had to build the whole system from scratch. Lost everything!! Luckily i got back up some of my stuff. Damn pissed off. This happened 2 months ago.

I recommend Sygate Personal Firewall Pro. It does prompt you whenever some funny thing is happening in your machine like application hijacking. Not to mention...it's FREE!

The problem with the designated driver program, it's not a desirable job, but if you ever get sucked into doing it, have fun with it. At the end of the night,

like Dino said... Firefox eliminates the worry about adware/spyware. (or am i just ignorant). It works fine with our forum somemore.
But when i was using IE, i used to clean-up the system with webroot's spy-sweeper. Donno if its good or what, but it was the cheapest one i could find... got regular updates somemore.
Some good freeware to share
1) Adaware(Takes care of adwares)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
2) ZoneAlarm (Firewall)
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
3)AVG Virus Scanner
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
This 3 to me are the one of the best freeware around that deals with PC protection. I use them personally and i have got no issues with them, in fact, they work pretty darn well. All these are free to homeusers.

i think it also depends on the hardware and the applications you currently have on your system. i do hear it works fine on others but one bitten...never going to try again. My advice before u install SP2. BACKUP!!

9th Jan. Just checked on the firewall on my notebook. In the Register area, it says Sygate Personal Firewall is free for personal use. That's why i can still use it until now :D

i sense a general dislike toward windows service pack 2... and just like to say this...
i hate it too!!! annoying man.. fulat, better forward our complains in to microsoft! :D
i installed SP 2 in all my desktops.. after 1 day fiddling with it, i decided NOT to patch my XP on my laptop.. SP1 with all the security patches doing just fine :D
nah, i'm a microsoft person all the way... eh fulat?
fulat, no offence, but i predict that in 10 years, microsoft will no longer be a force to be reckoned with:
1) browser - losing to firefox etc,
2) passport.net - withdrawn
3) windows - under threat (in certain markets) from linux
4) search - google is preferred
cracks are appearing.... and there is a whole army of programmers out there waiting to bring down the soft gates (pun intended)...
only things going for them : word. excel, powerpoint - already household name. ... if only someone will come up with viable alternatives...
why am i against MS? i have spent too much of my life re-booting

Eh! dont say like that coz I work for them. I had the first version installed without problems but waited like hell to download the patch and later upgraded to the latest SP2 release, also no problem. My machine very stable and free of all the nonsense since the installation of SP2 until now.

10 years!! By that time Fulat is already happily retired. I had problems with adware until I "upgrade" my OS to XP Pro.
But those adware really pissed you off.

First of all, competition is everywhere. Microsoft is not satisfied with whatever applications or software they have now and they are moving very aggressively into other apps. Therefore, it is a matter of how long you can hold your ground until defeated. By then, maybe I dont work in MS anymore but would have probably retired? hahaha..... But honestly, MS is also moving very aggresively into other areas and coverage of the market to ensure we survive.
Anyway, the revenue we get from MSN is I think loose change for Bill. IE comes free anyway, so I doubt loosing these 2 products to our competitors will pull MS down the drain, maybe not yet for now.
But I think it is time you upgrade your machine and installed the latest version of the XP wth SP2, trust me, rebooting of the machine will be unheard of again. Otherwise, install linux and use open office, if got problem, jcwong can support you!!
