Does the pen in your pocket tell others of your social status? How important is it? :)
I see many using fake mont blancs. I guess it's important.

Dino,
I beg to differ on this. Many people that I know do care about that pen they are putting in their pocket.
I am using LAMY for few years and later switch to Sheafer until now.
There are another few friends who dont even bother about what pen they are using, as long as they can use it to sign their CHEQUE and they are still getting special services when they go to the bank.
Hehehe......
Talking about pen, what about the watch you put on your hand? Does it tell a story too?
Heheheheh

In my shirt pocket, most of the time I have two Pilots, one fine red, the other a broad black. One to comment, the other to correct. I have two watches. A platinum Seiko to go with shirts, and a analogue Gshock to go with casual. So you can say that I dun tell any story from my pens or watches lar. buahahaha.
Most of the people I meet do not see pens or watches. They see how you carry yourself, your confidence. But I must say that quite a number look at shoes. Hmmmm....

Trying putting on a blue kilometrico ball pen while wearing RAOUL shirt. Hmm....take a peep in the mirror now. Then replaced it a fake Mont Blanc...try looking at the mirror again. Ask your colleagues for their opinion.

meh, i don't think pen nor watches really matter...
i use some really cheap pen, and it does what it's supposed to do...
watch wise, i only ever wear swatch but people have been surprised...
they're not just colourful bunch with cartoons and stuff...
there are some really cool swatch watches that even look like bracelets...
and i think i have about 4-5 of this variety, really handy for smart occasions.. :)

With computers dominating the work desktop, i don't think people use much pen these days. Mainly to jog down notes but definately not to write essay or anything. Watches however is slightly different, a watch can be seen in its entirety thus a watch would make a bigger difference. Would you agree that brands of watches are more well known by people as compared to pen brands?

Yes, I agree with you on this. However, the awareness had evolved much too. It used to be Rolex here, Rolex there, but nowadays, there are so many more to choose from, with almost same price range or even higher than those Rolex. For most CHINAMAN Ah Pek business man, they will die die stick to Rolex and for the younger generations, who can afford, would go for those more sophisticated type, ie, Patek Phillippe, Oris, etc etc, in my observation.
As for my wristwatch, this ALBA model, leather strap, Water Resist, Made In Japan, which cost me around RM75.00, hehehe, has been serving me well since 2005.
Hence, it all depends on individuals and the crowd one is with. Do they tell a story. Yes, to some it definitely does, social status, success, financial status, synonim to the car one is driving and No, to many it is just a tool to write and a tool to tell us the time.
My opinion.

Hahahaha I also dun carry a pen most of the time, if yes also just a cheapo gel pen to take notes or write receipts. I've not worn a watch for 9 years now. Only thing I wear on my hand is my wedding ring.
Dun really bother me if people want to judge me by what pen I carry or the watch I'm wearing. If you think I'm too low coz I don't have a nice pen and watch then too bad-lah, I'm not hard up for that kind of friends either. As for 'business purposes' I think wearing something presentable is enough already coz at the end of the day I believe it's your personal business ethics that matter. :)

talking about this..i was judged once for the watch i wear.
was going for sime darby interview for scholarship at that time...hehe i din wear a tie although i carried one in my pocket (always very lazy to wear tie..sked overkill..unless i'm interviewing for a bank job at which a tie and a blazer will be the minimum)
the interviewer at the end commented that i have mature thoughts but should also have put on a tie. and wear a better watch, i.,e. those with metal chains. that day iw as wearing my gshock g-lide which was baby blue in colour... reason i use that watch is cause of sports activities where in sailing we need to time our start. haha and i was thinking to myself that well the metal watch i have is much much cheaper than this gshock ..
but that's what matters to them, the image by wearing a metal bracelet watch.
today i wear a casio gshock which is "metalized". it's still a digital watch but u cant tell from far as it looks like one of those metal watches. got it at 50% discount at about $sgd 110.
for pen, i normally carry one around but not in my breast pocket. normally it's in my pants pocket and its really for writing down notes etc.

And the pens I have are all that I 'gasak' from hotels. Once, I went for a field call overseas with several of my angmoh colleagues. 3 of us, all ladies (including one business managers), all carried this pen from one particular hotel in Shenzhen. The pen looked very nice actually, came in metal casing, different colors.
Only the male counterpart carried his own expensive pen.
So is this a male/ female thingy? Pen is more of a a status shower for man only?

Both our watches more than 16 yrs old liao, still working good(touch wood)
I bought hubby a Mont Blanc pen looooong time ago, he never use, still in the drawer. Nowadays, all our pens bought from superstore 1 dozen $3.50. i personally dont carry pens but i keep alot FOC pens in my hse, collected over d yrs fm co events, curi fm hotel, contest prizes, xmas gifts, travel souvenirs, etc.
i dont care abt status fm expensive pens but i do insist on quality cuz last time i buy those cheap pens on sale in bulk (24 pens per box), half of it the ink dried up within weeks while the other half is scratchy n difficult to write. sheeessshhh...
but i do wear a nice metal J-Bovier watch wch is FOC cuz it was a farewell gift fm my ex-koligs. it comes with fancy box & warranty card with chop, so i guess it must be ori hor. it's my only professional looking watch so i wear it to work everyday, i only wear my p.street fake leather strap watches on casual outings.

I read this thread with great interest. It's nice to know what other people used to put their thoughts down. In this age of electronics, pens and pencils are no longer as important as they used to be. With emails replacing snail mails and PDAs replacing notepads, most people never get a chance to use a pen. Which is a shame :sad-2:
Let me show you what I use when I sit at my desk.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i318/singteck/P1000336.jpg
Pencils that can be reused and dip pens that can be used with iron gall ink if I want to.
I love wooden pencils but I don't use them anymore. Hopefully less trees will be chopped down because of that..... but I doubt it.
I don't use cheap pens because that would just add to the waste that we would all be swimming in soon.
I use fountain pen because they last my life time and probably more.
I use dip pens because it makes me slow down and think what I am writing.
And quite recently I have started making my own ink. And you can still catch me writing with a quill.
Sorry for the subject you to my rambling........ must be getting old.

What else are you not making yourself? I think if we throw you on an island all by yourself also you won't die-lah.
was told that in the UK, professionals are expected to wear shirts with no pockets. the more expensive ones usually have no pockets. reason is coz these people are expected to wear jackets/ suits. so if you have a shirt with pocket, it shows that you are the 'working class'...
was also told that a certain boss threatened to tear any pockets that he sees on the shirts of his employees....
so how then? ....
another thing to consider: if you see robert kwok, ananda krisnan or any other billionaire carrying a kilometrico, will that change what you think of them?
on the other hand, even if i have a RM100,000 diamond encrusted pen in my pocket, people will still think it's a fake...
so what's the point (pun intended) then?

Surely something as cheap as a pen cannot be used to place someone on the social ladder :weird:
How much can a pen cost? Opps sorry..... it should be..... how much can an "ordinary" pen cost? We are not talking about Limited Editions. One two thousands are easily affordable to the average factory workers. It's just that they have no desire to own such a pen. Most people wouldn't know how much the pens I am carrying cost anyway. The only pen they can recognise is MontBlanc regardless if it's real or fake.
Why do people feel that using a good pen is extravagant yet at the same time they would take a huge loan to buy an expensive car and then change it every few years?
If you like it, use it...... just don't buy a MontBlanc, they are not that good quality.

haha that's wat a lot of rich ppl do anyway..
it's sad that society rely on status symbol. i would much rather be practical and go with the utility that a certain item gives me rather than how much glory it can benefit me.
i dun see the point of wearing rolex, a lot of watches now are as reliable as them, and have more functions as well...hehe unless u're an avid collector of watches who appreciates the fine craftsmanship (at which i think rolex shouldn't be ur choice, some other swiss brands are better)..
as for pen,, never tried pelican. but i think bic is quite good and smooth...

Talking about expensive branded goods, and cheap non-branded ones ... is it really a status shower? I know of a lot of ladies who stinge on food and many other things so that they can splurge on a LV bag. Or save for the whole year, so that can splurge on branded goods during the once a year Great Singapore Sales.
And what about the people dressed from top to toe in expensive brands, but once they open they open their mouth, you can see how uncultured they are?
I'd rather live in moderation, and keep my money for rainy days and early retirement.:noworry:

i don't wear a watch, haven't done so since 1995.
i carry different sorts of pilot pens (gel type).. they change all the time, becos I tend to misplace them. hehe.. tt's why cannot carry mont blanc.. sure lose it..
however.. i do have a waterman pen that has been with me for about 5 years.. but the reason i didn't lose it is becos it's stuck to my backpack.. i don't use it!! :o
so.. what does that say abt me? ( besides forgetful.. hehe :p )
