Prostate cancer dem scary-lah, I know since I lost my dad to it. Finger in your bottom to save your life is dem worth it.
I plan to do PSA test from age 35 onwards. Is this cancer hereditery? I also have to watch out for diabetes as well since it runs in the family. Hmmmm maybe it's a good thing for me if I go for the fatbet thingy.
I think because it involves embarrassing check up for it, most men avoid it.
I bet you in Sitiawan, a lot of men have it but don't know about it because they don't check for it.

1) Removal of prostate -- But got side effect. Leaking and impotency.
2) Planting radioactive seeds in prostate -- Could or could not work, but if kenot work, surgery would be very difficult because of the seeds.
3) Leave it be -- Most men would die of other causes before the cancer gets to be a problem (Normally for men over 70)
I think i know too much about this subject liao. :squeeze:
Add one more, take the wait and see approach and have regular checkups to monitor the growth.

H20, let me share a bit of 'my way'. Can't totally reject Mrs OSS adage. I still agree on the 'starve a fever'. Feverish kids tend to sleep a lot, eat very little and will throw up easily when put food on their face!
When my sons have fever, I'll use Hisamitsu 'Bye Bye Fever' and place on their foreheads and change to new one when it dries up; give them Calpol syrups; plenty of warm drinking water, Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), barley or soda drinks and mien sian with anchovy and lean meat soup and plain porridge, Chinese pear, apple - no oil in all the food. I'll give them quick hot shower to refresh them. It means, I'll be monitoring and caring for them round the clock until they get better (I'm not complaining since I'm a full-time mum).
I also 'guasa' them if they suffer heat stroke and roll hard boil eggs on their stomach and chest (traditional method) until the egg yolk is clear of small spots. I also check on their urine's concentration and quantity. If it's very concentrated or no urge for urinating at all, that means the whole body is very heaty and it's essential to increase their liquid intake. I also check on their stools. Fever will persist if they only have one or two biji like guli stools or none at all. I'll be relieved when I see them passing 'nice-looking' stools because it means they are on the road to recovery.
H20, if kids have cold or flu, their appetite also decrease mah. Same as fever, plenty of warm water and clear soup, porridge, NO barley drink, NO orange or cooling fruits, NO milk or any other dairy products because they only cause excess secretion of mucus hence stuffing up the nose (I learn this from an article in our local paper).
So far, with the above methods, home care and plenty of rest it works well for them.

No need thanks H20. Glad to be of little helps. :)
Yeah, I guess orange is cooling and mandarin is the heaty type. Both contribute to coughing...*puzzle* Remember during CNY, we'd get soar throat, coughing if we consumed too much mandarin oranges?
I think guasa is hokkien and 'guang sa' is hockchew. My late maternal grandmother and mother are very good with this traditional treatment for heat stroke and I learn this from my mum. My hubby is also very good at this. Do you remember seeing Sitiawan ppl with red like bruise spot between the eyes, neck (look a bit like love bite :D)? This was the result of 'guangsa'. I'll use the knuckles of my index and middle fingers to snap these areas several times and using ceramic spoon or the guasa board with some Chinese medicated oil to scrape their back to discharge the heat from the body. My 10 fils.
H20, one more note. In the event someone has heat stroke, it is advisable not to go for fever jab because there were fatal cases after the injection.
Doctors, lychee did not mean to ruin your business ok!

sis was mentioning abt this OGAWA EYE MASSAGER.
any1 wif any info on it? like besides relaxation...wat condition does it help wif?
she's thinking of buying for dad, who is on topical treatment (eyedrops) for open angle glaucoma...and recently his eye-pressure shot up a lil. otherwise he doesnt have hypertension o diabetes.
sis n i had a debate on whether the massager wud actually contribute in reducing EYE PRESSURE.
-massage improves circulation...relaxes eye...reduce pressure
vs
-reduce drainage (more like cause due to narrowed outlet) or increased production causes it...massaging cause more stress to the already hi pressure compartment?
opthalmologist....optometrist...anyone wif experience wif massage stuffs or anyone at all....wat say u?

How do u differentiate between hyperventilation and asthma attack?
When I'm triaging in ER, the 1st thing I see, is the type of breathing, any indrawing, trachael tug, coughing as well as audible wheezes. 2nd is any numbness around the mouth as well as hands (later stage will be claw like fingers, cramps).
Obviously, anyone who is having an asthma attack will let you know straight away that they are having an asthma attack or an anxiety problem.
For asthma, audible wheezing, sometimes with cough (hoarse), tripoding, and chest auscultation will either have wheezes or a silent chest. O2 sat will also give an indication. Tachypnea will or will not be present.
For hyperventilation, most will present with exaggerated screaming, crying, behaviour etc. Almost all of them will let you know that they have an anxiety problem. Chest auscultation will be clear, no indrawing or tugging.
Vitals will be fine. Also tachypnea is the number 1 indicator.
History taking is very important.

Case 1
I coach the school badminton team. One of my girls have a problem. On many occasions when i put her through shuttle drills and court control exercises (speed & control), she will end up with breathing difficulties:
1) Trying desperately to inhale but you can see that the air is having trouble getting through the passageway. (Her throat will look like someone trying to suck on a ribena packet drink until dry and the packet all crumpled up...)
2) Wheezing sound
When I ask her, she said she doesn't have any history of asthma attack. I ask her father too, and he said the same thing, that his daughter no history of that.
She has no problem with endurance exercises such as continuous jogging for 30 minutes. In fact she can last longer on endurance than me ( so paiseh....)
However, when it comes to speed training as in shuttle drill and court control, where speed and instant recovery is concerned, she will be in trouble.
In my shuttle drill and court control, i will place a box on my side of the court, and send shuttles, one after another, all over the player's side of the court. The player need to cover all corners of the court, with the correct footwork, but at the same time making sure they send the shuttle into my box. Depending on the ability and speed of my trainees, i will adjust my speed too (like a piano metronome.. haha).
This girl has the skill but she always have her routine cut short by her breathing difficulties.
Any comments?

Different types of activity will stress the body in different ways. In this case, the girl should be consulted to the respiratory specialist. There are different tests that they have to do to determine if she has asthma or activity induced asthma. For long distance running, you can settle your breathing into a rhythm, but when it comes to drills and sets esp with a fartlek type activity, it will stresses the respiratory system.
She needs to get tested.

Excercise Induced Asthma (http://www.webmd.com/asthma/guide/exercise-induced-asthma). I have it as well and in the past if i exercise continuously(4-6x a week), my chest will hurt when i breath. Have been in this state for about 6-8 years liao.

Does breathing into a bag really help? how?[/QUOTE]
With regular resps, you take in O2 and CO2 and expel them. The body needs both O2 and CO2 to work. When you hyperventilate, you are expelling CO2 at a high rate than O2. When you breath into a paper bag, you are actually trying to restore the balance of CO2 in the system by rebreathing the CO2 in the bag.
We don't use that anymore, something to do with dependency. What happens if you can't find a bag anywhere? Nowadays, we talk them down, basically, sit them down, tell them firmly to calm down and take sloooooow breaths.
Thanx for the info.

If you can get the hospital to dispense a bottle of Abulterol(since Alf says anything also can in gomen hospital), then she can take 2 puff before the activity and see if it helps her breathing.

Actually, before dispensing the bronchial dilator, you have to make sure that she does have excercise induced asthma. She might have esophageal or trachael spasm 2nd to weak trachael or esophageal muscles that collapses on deep breathing. That will also disguise the true symptoms and allow people to think that it is asthma as trachael stricture will cause stridor.

1st rule of thumb, stop whatever she is doing and let her catch her breathe. The sets and drills will probably have to be modified to her ability until such time that a diagnosis and treatment has been initiated

My 4 year old girl sometimes get nosebleeds, I think it's the 3rd time this year. She didn't bump her nose or anything like that but so far it seems to happen after she kena scolding or rotan.
In today's case, she woke up at 7am and refused to have an afternoon nap and stayed awake till 12pm. Playing whole day with just a 20 minute nap at about noon. She didn't drink much water but had milk and milo. I think she didn't drink enough water today also-lah but can that lead to nose bleed? Her nose bleed lasted for about 4-5 minutes and stopped after that. Any advise?

Dun worrylah.. Look into the nose with a torch.. If u see the center part have some yellow looking tahi hidung it means that there is a injury.. Usually after some running nose.. Because there is tahi hidung children will dig it and it will cont to bleed off and on.. If it bleed too often n wont stop then u need to see either a paeds or a ENT surgeon..

A girl in my class got TB.
She's one of the few who actually has potential of doing well in her SPM.
We are only a few weeks away from SPM.
I dun wish to see her missing schools as we gear up for the last lap.
Her other family members are being tested at the moment.
How infectious is it? Is her presence in school posing a threat to others?
I dun wanna see her being "disishkan".

She said the doctor told her to stay in hospital.
But, her father wants her to come to school, since SPM is just round the corner.
She said most probably she got infected from her Grandma. The old lady passed away last year. Other family members screened and turned out o.k.
I passed her some surgical masks this morning. Dun wanna risk other children.
Has BCG vaccination been phased out in M'sia? These children dun have the shots like us when we were in Std. 6?

Tanya sikit, my hubby's buddy has been having this problem for sometime.
Almost every morning when he's awake, he'll feel numbness on both his
hands. Trying to bend his fingers will take some effort. But once he's up
on his feet, the numbness will go away. He had consulted a few doctors,
but none seem to be able to help him out. Done blood test, body check
up, results free from any illness. He suspected stroke, but loctors said

it's back to square one when he's no longer on medication. So what do

if health check ups are normal, occur only after prolonged periods of rest, gets better when he is upright...
probably it is related to posture?
e.g. posture of sleeping that results in the radial nerve being compressed...
is it just numbness or maybe there is tingling sensation or pain as well? that could indicate peripheral neuropathy... does the friend has diabetes?
or maybe there is swelling or the skin turns pale/bluish? may suggest heart failure with compensation?

As for posture, if he's awake sleeping sideways, then only one arm
that's below the body will feel the cramp and not the one above.
Numbness on both arms r felt when he's awake sleeping on his back.
Nope, not a diabetes, and neither does he have high blood or heart
problems.

I think I might have a problem with high blood pressure, about 3 weeks ago I was at the doctor's clinic coz got fever and flu. The doctor took the blood pressure and said it was 140 over 90 and ask me to come back for follow up after I'm well. I more or less shrug it off and didn't go back since he is not the doctor I usually visit.
Today took my blood pressure using one of those blood pressure monitor thingyies that my MIL uses and the reading is 147 over 98. I guess that is not too good right? I'm didn't sleep enough last night but the reading should not be that high also right? Any advise?

googling is useless la
if that can diagnose and treat ailments, then doctors become redundant liao
this is from the googled answer but it is wrong
"According to the best available scientific evidence[citation needed], tennis elbow is an idiopathic, self-limiting, enthesopathy of middle age. As with many other hand and arm conditions[citation needed], speculative etiologies such as overuse, tennis, etc. have very limited scientific support."
most of the treatments suggested by the wiki page has a disclaimer that they don't work, so what's the use?
anyway, my question was directed at dr cck bcos he suggested seeing an orthopaedic surgeon and my gp said even if there is calcification, seeing an orth/surgeon is absolutely useless. and the bone protrusion will be permanent. can any doctor verify?

H2o,
Ur GP is rite..Even if there is calcification it still nothing can b done. Surgeon wun do anything but Xray will show calcification which means the d/s is progressive n u now got major headache. If no calcification then just b more careful n dun over use ur wrist. Oh ya is tennis elbow but is the wrist action that injured the tendon.
It is actually small tear in ur tendon after heavy use of ur muscle. The repair process cause inflamation n sometimes can b real painful. If repeated inflamation then calcification can occur n eventually stiff joint.
I noe ur age so u r reaching the age where u r losing calsium in ur bones. Everyone will deposite calsium in their bones till age 26. Then all will start losing calsium from their bones. Female bigger problem cos of risk of oesteoporosis. So u now shud do exercise tat less stress to ur joint n bones.. Best is swimming n cycling.
H20- I don't know anything about tennis elbow, sorry. But i do get specimens like lateral epicondyle and wonder what will happen to the patient with these missing.....If I had the probelm, i might watch and wait and don't stress it too much and maybe see a good experienced, reputable orthopedic surgeon for advice. Doesn't mean I have to take it... :)
thanks monay
i got mild soreness slowly over months of playing squash, then one nite after squash it was very inflamed
my left elbow is totally unaffected (so i don't think it's deterioration due to the age prob)
my gp advised me to stay off squash for 4-6 weeks and so i did for 3 wks and the pain has subsided. but the bone protrusion is so obvious that i wonder if the pain will come back if i play squash again. and when it's inflamed i can't work at all (can't use the mouse) - so it's become a serious problem
but yeah since both you and cck suggest seeing an orthopaedic i think i shall

If no calcification then just b more careful n dun over use ur wrist. Oh ya is tennis elbow but is the wrist action that injured the tendon.

oh no!!! i only like squash! :crying:
so are you saying that the protrusion is probably result of calcification (which was a result of repeated inflammation?) if so, i really have to give up squash liao.... i really have to think hard about this bcos it's really difficult to give up one's main form of exercise
how does the loss of calcium contribute to this?

lucky me then, i get to play after church, we have 2 tables... can't wait to match up with my mum. I think i have improved but they train more than me...
hubby tried to get me to play more aerobic game like badminton (amelia can tell you how bad i am at it).. one or two sessions later my elbow started to hurt and I could feel the strain when lifting objects... still not back to normal yet and don't think i need to see orthopedic surgeon. Scared of them... bye, nice chatting.. finished my onion bagel with butter and kaya and milo and ready for Saturday.. yay.

Loss of calsium has nothing to do wif tennis elbow.. Just telling u to cool off aggressive sports cos female reaching 40+ reaching age for oesteoporosis.
The protrusion most probably is not due to calcification but over use joint. Everyday ur bone go through remodeling. When overuse the bone may b bigger then the other.
Anyway u need to c ortho cos i m no expert n telling u things over the net is dangerous. Better someone c u properly.

My blood test results are back. Results are not suprising to me as I've expected my cholesterol level to be high.
total cholesterol is 238mg/dL
HDL cholesterol is 46mg/dL
LDL cholesterol is 134mg/dL
Ratio is 5.1
Triglycerides is 288mg/dL
Serum Uric acid is 8.9mg/dL
the other results are normal so not highlighted in yellow. My blood pressure during the test was 140/100. Yesterday night's reading was 140/84.
Looks like I'll be cutting down on a lot of food I normally eat. Sigh....
Dun forget exercise.
At least still can do something about it before its too late.

For triglycerides, you should try the red yeast rice (the red rice) that is used in making the red rice wine. They sell it in US in capsule form, but you can take it raw. My last physical exam had 74 for triglicerides and few years ago I had 200+ as well, not sure if it was the red yeast rice or the fact that I have no gallbladder (can no longer digest fatty stuff fast) or combination of both.
But definitely need some exercise and cut down on the good food :)

hey guys.. need some held/advise here.
I have an allergic reaction to dust mites (that's the only one, as I've done a blood test before). Hence, each and everytime I come back to Malaysia, immediately I'll have an allergic reaction. I wish it's rashes on my body but it's not. It attacks my face especially around the eye and nose area. My face is all red and a bit swollen.
My questions are :
1. If I were to take anti-histamine, is it harmful to my pregnancy? I'm 14 weeks now.
2. What can I do to reduce (if not heal) my facial redness completely?
This is so irritating, I couldn't do anything ie go out and enjoy myself as I look awful!! Please help.
Note that this NEVER happen to me when I'm in Sydney. Only when I come back to Malaysia.

I'm back to normal now. I guess it takes longer to heal because of my pregnancy now. It never use to take that long to acclimatize to the weather here.
I took some anti-histamine initially but I'm not too worried as I've already passed the 1st trimester. Baby's already formed well, only waiting for it to grow bigger now. Thanks for your concern! =)

Why keep aspirin by your bedside?
About Heart Attacks
There are other symptoms of an heart attack besides the pain on the left arm.
One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of sweating, however these symptoms may also occur less frequently.
Note: There may be no pain in the chest during a heart attack.
The majority of people (about 60%) who had an heart attack during their sleep, did not wake up. However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from your deep sleep..
If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit of water.
Afterwards
- phone a neighbor or a family member who lives very close by
- say "heart attack!"
- say that you have taken 2 aspirins.
- take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door, and wait for their arrival and...

well, aspirin is used as "blood thinner" (e.g. travellers advised to take aspirin to prevent deep vein thrombosis)...
and it has also been shown to prevent further muscle damage following a heart attack...
since aspirin is one of the most common drugs that can be found in pretty much every household...
so taking aspirin will likely buy time, until medical assistance arrive, through its anti-platelet action and cardiac muscle protection...
note though, anyone who's on some sort of anticoagulant drugs such as warfarin should not take it with aspirin...
because then there's major risk of cases of uncontrolled bleeding...

ok, aspirin may not be one of the common household drugs in malaysia...
but certainly in most european household that i know of, aspirin is in the medicine cabinet...
there's also paracetamol (which is what panadol is) but aspirin is also there...
some people confuses between aspirin and paracetamol...
and i can't help but feeling this is rather common, particularly in malaysia...
since panadol is so majorly marketed as the analgesic and painkiller of choice...
chris, no, paracetamol (or panadol) and aspirin are different...
while both are commonly used as analgesic and painkillers, and widely available...
paracetamol has very weak anti-inflammatory action in comparison to aspirin...
ibuprofen, on the other hand, would be more similar to aspirin than paracetamol...
both aspirin and ibuprofen has anti-imflammatory and anti-platelet actions (aspirin is better)...
as most people take paracetamol or aspirin for, say, fever, headache, minor pain and aches...
given that paracetamol is less likely to cause gastrointestinal upsets than aspirin...
and there's less likelihood of adverse toxicity effect from paracetamol than aspirin...
this could influence why the touting of paracetamol as better household drug...
but if nobody's trying to overdose on anything, they're both safe to keep at home...
and used appropriately, now, you know the advantage of aspirin over paracetamol...

Agree that masks are so difficult to get hold of. A piece from Made In Where I also dont know, looks SIMILAR to the ones used by the doctors at the hospital is costing RM0.70 a piece here. But the sad thing is, no stock, and people are not buying by pieces anymore, mostly by boxes, yes, 5 boxes at one go and each box have 50 pieces.
Hand sanitizer, good practise, my kids do have the dettol hand sanitizer, small bottle but expensive, just squeeze and rub against the hands, no need rinsing somemore, quite convenient also.
Hopefully the vacccine will be coming out soon.
Doctors, any other advices on what other things to watch out for other than the standard thing we hear everyday.. wash hands.... wear masks.... blah blah blah.
Because as doctors, as Dr Alfred mentioned, if the patient sakit even with H9N9, you doctors are the first liner they will come visit.

i suspect washing will actually destroy the integrity of the masks...
sure, outwardly, it'll look fine particularly after careful washes...
however, these masks are simply not made for abrasive actions on them...
plus if there are germs present, they can't be rid of from the mask surfaces just like that...
it's really not just what we can see, it's the microscopic level that we need to consider too...

From engineering point of view, face mask suppose to be a filter.....and if is use to filter off bacteria in the air, the pores are very very tiny.....and the detergent and tap water we use consist of particles size greater than the pores...so when u wash the mask, u will clogged up the pores and making the "clean" mask ineffective in filtering out the bacteria....:)

Received this thru'e-mail:-
Friends,
Thanks to media hype about H1N1, I've received calls from several who trust me, to advise. The hype in media about the utility of face masks and N95 as a tool for general protection against H1N1 can't be deplored enough. Today, a friend who listened wanted me to write down briefly what I advised so that he could tell others in similar words. Hence this short email to friends whom I have advised recently.. Please realize that this is not an official advice, especially the one about face masks or N95.
Most N95 respirators are designed to filter 95% particulates of 0.3µ, while the size of H1N1 virus is about 0.1µ. Hence, dependence on N95 to protect against H1N1 is like protecting against rain with an umbrella made of mosquito net.
Tamiflu does not kill but prevents H1N1 from further proliferation. H1N1, like other Influenza A viruses, only infects the upper respiratory tracts and proliferates (only) there.. The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/ throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not the problem but proliferation is.
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps - not fully highlighted in most official communications - can be practised (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):
1. Hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications)
2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at Sutra Neti (a very good Yoga asana to clean the nasal cavities), but blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.
Happy breathing!

Who is that??? Good advice for washing....but don't agree with the statement on mask.....yah yah....virus is small....but it doesn't come as individual virus......it comes in droplets.....which can be filtered with the mask.....so wear your mask!!!!

But your mask, over prolonged use, gets damp and become a good breeding ground for virus. And if you don't have a beautiful nurse to take out the mask properly for you, risk of infection is high...

The cyst it just past the ribs at the side of the abs. So when I lie face down and my kids are jumping on my back I can really feel like I'm lying down on a small guli. No pain or anything like that but sibeh irritating. :squeeze:
my boss had one on his back years ago, he was dem worried abt it before the removal and told us, but it was quick and painless and he was happy after :D

a girlfriend kelly has a fibroid the size of a big lychee (she found out by feeling the bump on her abdominal area). after a visit to the sonographer, she was told it's ok to leave it be.
i have another girlfriend kim who "left it be" for two years and it grew to the size of a grapefruit! her abdomen was bulging and everyone thought she was pregnant. it turned out to be a bigger procedure than if she had had it removed when it was the size of a pingpong ball.
so even if it's benign, should kelly have it taken out? after all it's discernible from the exterior already

That is not the same as grapes. It is about the size of softball.

thank you HH
i was at a loss with that reply
so any comments abt leaving something like that knowing that it is increasing in size
even though it doesn't present itself as a problem, the size becomes a problem (unsightly, discomfort, etc)

That's why I was quite dubious as it looked like some sort of pyramid scheme but my friends have checked with a Doctor in Canberra for due diligence before trying and raves about it.
They are not doing it to earn money as the husband is a lawyer and earns bucketloads and i've known them for a long time. So quite save to try as everyone feedbacks seems quite positive about it. Thanks Dr Alfred

she's 40 never had kids not planning to in the future
everything normal except for some liver abnormality
she's very very fit
i don't know why the sonographer said it was ok to leave it
isn't it impossible to tell whether it's benign or malignant by just looking at the U/S ?
and even if it is benign, nobody wants to have something that grows to the size of a grapefruit before removal!!!! that would be more problematic wouldn't it?
