Why la u write such a formal 'letter'?? Sumore why thank me?? Blur...
Yups! I've always wanted to climb dat amazing mountain while james wanted to go water rafting in monsoon season for more thrill. We're all flying there together on 7th Nov but coming back separately as some want to extend their hols while some hv to return to work. I'm coming back on 13th Nov.
Basically in 5-6 days, we plan to climb KK in 2 days (overnite at Laban Rata)and the balance days spent on water rafting, island hopping, visit cultural village, etc. Those who overstay hv their own plans so i wouldnt know.
Budget is between RM1k-RM1.5k including flights, tour packages, accommodation and food exp. We're trying to keep it to a minimum by staying in budget places instead of hotels, eating where d locals eat instead of restaurants, get group discounts for all activities with fabian's help.
There are 6 of us daredevils so far... me, james, hock kin, mal, prescilia & fabian in sabah who will act as our negotiator n 'tour guide' around town.
As for coming back in one piece, u'll be ok as long as u follow d guide while climbing KK and try not to fall off while rafting (it's a really rough ride).
I cant promise u'll return all fair & lovely for d wedding, cuz we're outdoors most of d time, but u can get a sexy suntan to show off at d event? hehe...
U interested?? :D

Try coming down the other side of ungku busu and see if still botak of not. I would recommend you bring along 2 bodyguards armed with shotgun (for babi hutan) and also parang (to clear path). But the last time I went down that way was a few years ago liau-lah.

Dearest Adele,
With reference to the cooking of these mutated prawns,i don't think you should eat it but i suggest that you just kill it and dispose it at the Kg.Koh big longkang. Don't worry, nobody pays attention to anything that floats there. :p
Yours Faithfully,
Dino
Dearest Adele,
It has come to my attention that you have intentions to dispose cooked-mutated-giant-prawns-with-4-limbs-and-long-jaws into our Kg Koh longkang.
I strongly urge that you do not carry that out as it will pollute our beloved hometown. Please consider dumping it into a river near Mount K as those rivers are very clean and can take some pollution. :p

I hv forwarded ur replies to d said govt. However, knowing how snail mail here really IS snail mail, and how the cogs of machinery in certain dept are karat to d point of no return, we may only get a response after a min of 3 yrs.
Meantime, I would strongly advise d nomination to continue for public interest. I would also suggest the most Honourable High Priestess Chris C to be our benovelant & fair judge to select d winner.
May d best man win!

P.S. JC, i believe all ur choices are already booked for heavy filming schedule due to higher sales of d idiot box around d world as a direct result of an increase in idiots worldwide. However, im sure d govt is kind enuf to consider importing d famous giant lizards & cockroaches from galapagos islands as well as some extinct siberian tigers & mammoths from 10,000 BC film set. Im sure they will keep u in good company until u return in several pcs.

i stomach has burst from the non-stop 6 pages of laughter (except for the 2 moments when my agency called to interrupt my flow of laughter *sheesh ppl*). i've not laughed so much in so long and i miss it laughing with you guys. forgive me for saying this but the past 6 pages is way better than our Fav Jokes thread!!
so, yes, where was i? oh, ya, stomach burst.... so, need Dr Alf to stitch it up but because will be too weak, will need the 3 unkers to carry me up but (again) contrary to belief that i'm not that heavy, will need additional help from prawns/crocs and to avoid being harmed further, will need trusted friends to bring along the rotans for the 4 carrying 'saints' (3 each should be sufficient) to tame them and jie-jie and Dr Alf to help carry the supplies.
in other words, we shall all go up to Mount K and have fun!! yipee!!! oh, now i would need someone to carry my back-pack up for me.... hmmm.... who can i nominate??
Dearest Ah Boh,
I think i should be able to make it. Please do count me it and update me further when you have the details.
However, as spoken to Malc, i'm still interested to go to Sipadan. This trip will be too much for me to cramp and enjoy everything so i'm calling out to anyone and everyone if they are willing to travel with me to Sipadan sometime in July (heard June - Aug is the best time to dive). Also, i'm planning to get my divers license there so would be great if got partner(s). will find out more details to share if there are any other takers.
Back to my dearest forummers,

You might as well get your license in KL, becos it is vely expensive to go to Sipadan just to learn how to dive. Oso, now nobody can stay on the island.
Back to my dearest forummers,
Please continue your siao-siao chatters so that when i revisit this thread, i might really have to join you in TR!!

Dear fruit,
KL dive lessons are boring and on part time basis. You will have to make several trips back to KL and learn diving in a pool.
I would suggest to you to make a trip to Pulau Tioman, check in to BJ Diving Centre located in Kampong Salang.
For the next 3 days, you will be stuffed with diving lessons. Theory is taught in classrooms. Practical is done in the sea. Exams are conducted under the coconut tree.
You will then pass with a PADI accreditation from a gold PADI dive center. Your dive license will come in gold color as well.
Regards,
JC

Dear unker,
What's the other meaning to the Ungku Busu climb ah?
Blur-blur,
Adele
Dear Ah Boh,
Not going diving in Nov la... in Jun/July.... how about Tioman as JC suggested? since i'm no duyung, better you come if not the unkers won't be satisfied as their hopes to see one won't be met! ;)
My turn to be in hopes,
Adele
dear 'unker',
got another meaning meh?
2nd-blur-in-command,
ah boh
dear adele,
tioman is very enticing... i will think about it... but not qualified to compete with those sexy dugongs frolicking there to entice unkers, most i can do is throw smelly fish to attract those dugongs nearer for unkers to catch.
yours honestly,
ah boh

a friend offered me a price of SGD 535 for an all inclusive open water package including pool sessions, theory, land transportation to p.aur/dayang , accomodation and food for the duration of the dive trip on the island. Normal public price is SGD 620. i will probably be taking up this offer somewhere mid june...anyone else interested? only con to it is that u'd probably have to come to singapore for the pool session and thoery. pool session conducted on tues and thurs, then fri head to the island and back on sunday.

I thought the title says Mount K, how come from mountain gone to the sea..in Sipadan ah?
Dearest Adele and Ah Boh,
May this old Uncle make some suggestions about your planned Mount K trip since I have been there and done that with the Malaysia Nature Society people a couple of years ago ??
For those planning to hike up Mt K, I would suggest hiking from the Mersilau Park HQ instead of from the old Kinabalu Park HQ. You should spend at least 2nites at the Mersilau Park HQ, so that you have one full day exploring the cool Montane forest and interesting spots around the park HQ.
You need at least a good half day to visit a natural Nepenthes ( Pitcher plants) park. There are many different interesting varieties of Nepenthes. I read somewhere in the Forum that there is a Forummer who has a special interest in Pitcher plants. This park would be of special interest to this Monkey cup specialist.
The Mersilau trail, although longer than the Kinabalu trail, is a lot more scenic and pleasant. The flora along this trail are still intact and track are not so eroded. The cool air, fairy like beautiful Montane forest plants and mist shrouded track made one feel like walking in a heavenly garden !
Your stamina must be good to maximize the enjoyment of the heavenly ambiance. Thus, its important to train well and build up your hill climbing stamina before going for the trip!
BTW, Adele, Ah Boh and James (?), see if you can identify the Rhododendron plants and see how many different colours of the Rhododendron flowers you can spot along the way up to Mt K.
The essential things to bring are; warm clothes, good windbreaker, good windproof gloves, balaclava, a torch and a good camera to capture you pretty faces in the beautiful environment for sharing with the forummers.
As the wise says... enjoy the journey, yes enjoy the climb up Mt K !! ...:)
Regards,
LaoZhang

Quote from Fabian via email on itinerary :
Greetings,
I've taken a look at the suggested activities and the time frame we have for the trip. I need to finalize some tentative dates so that i can do bookings. Dates can still be adjusted after booking is made as long as the dates we intend to shift to is still available. The important thing is to have the booking done. The key activities while be water rafting and climbing mt. k. Here's the suggested tentative:
Plan A
7/11 - Arrival
Hopefully with no delays in flights everyone will be in kk by 11am. Drive to kundasang and take a tour of whatever available sights there (war memorial, flower garden, dairy cow farm, etc.), spend the night at kinabalu park.
8/11 - Begin hike up mt. k
Start of hike up mt. k at about 8-8.30am. Arrive in laban rata at about 2-4pm (hard to predict). Dinner and rest there
9/11 - Mt. K summit
Wake up real early, 1-2am and begin climb to summit at 2-2.30am. Arrive at summit preferably by 5.30 am to watch sunrise. Begin descent back down and arrive back at laban rata at about 10am. Start descent after packing and checking out and arrive at kinabalu park about 3-4pm.
Begin drive back to KK or alternatively head to Poring(see Plan B).
10/11 - Rest and recuperate
Take it easy by touring KK and nearby attractions (cultural village, museum, zoos, etc.) or island if there's no complains then =) . Realistically its difficult to go for island hopping as we need to wake up early and everyone would want to just sleep in today.... at least I know the driver would want to but he'll succumb to a majority vote =)
11/11 - Rafting
Wake up 7am, either drive(we get a discount if we drive) or follow the tour transport down to beaufort. Train to rafting site is at 10am if i'm not mistaken and arrive at the rafting site about 11.30-12pm. Rafting starts after a short briefing and lasts about 2 hours typically and by about 2.30 everyone is back at the starting point. Buffet lunch follows and train ride back is about 3 or so pm. Arrive back in KK at about 7pm.
12/11 - Departure
Since pres and mal's departure is at 6.30pm there's enough time for island hopping in the morning. Can be back by about 1-2pm and last minute souvenir shopping if needed before departure.
Plan B (Poring & Kudat alternative)
7/11 - Same as Plan A
8/11 - Same as Plan A
9/11 - Mt.
Drive to Poring and spend the night there.
10/11 - Activities at Poring
Activities at Poring will be hot springs, canopy walk, a 100m cascading waterfall if you're willing to hike to it (3km hike), a possibility of taking a look at rafflesia (well technically the rafflesia will be there but the flower bud takes 9 months to grow before blooming and when it does only lasts about 6 days). Leave Poring at about 2-3pm and head for Simpang Mengayau, Kudat. Kudat is the tip of borneo, the "dog ears" you see on sabah map.It is on the northern area of Sabah which is mainly populated by the Bajau and Rungus. There's a Rungus longhouse on the way to Kudat we can visit. Anyway at simpang mengayau which is the very tip of the "dog ears", its a nice beach and seaside and the position gives very nice sunsets to look at which is what its famous for. After sunset which is about 6pm, take dinner in Kudat town and drive back to KK.
11/11 - Same as Plan A
12/11 - Same as Plan A
As all of you are most probably aware, climbing mt. K and rafting are physically strenuous activities and thus need to spaced out to allow enough time to rest in between them. I put mt. K climb as the first item first for logistics purposes (less checking in and out of accommodations) and secondly to maximize the likelihood of success for the climb. I'm afraid if we go rafting first we might be somewhat drained when attempting mt. K. On the other hand, being drained for rafting doesn't make any difference. (Can't give up halfway can you? hehe)
Ah Boh > I think me, James, Prescilia vote for Plan A and Mal vote for Plan B, altho im not sure bout Hock Kin & Fabian himself. What do u think? Bear in mind this email was before we knew about Mersilau Park HQ route so Fabian may revise it slightly if majority agrees with the new route.

Dearest Mount K participants,
I shared both "letters" with my friend who just came back from Mount K last week, this was his reply:
"The 2 plan is very different.....i think plan 1 is better....this is because your time is very limited (dun be too greedy) and secondly after few days in jungle, go to town la.....mat salleh dun like to stary in forest for long!!!!
Mesilau is the better trail to go, come back to Timpohon and not Mesilau.....Mesialu is about 2km longer then Timpohon but as the mail mentioned, more thing to see....
i think the ideal one is after the climb straight away go to hot spring but you must make sure your team member must be fit, if not you can't make it.....just like my trip, i reach at KK park 2.30pm but the last person reach at 8.30pm....how to go??unless you all go by your own la!!!!
u can go snorkling after the climbing, its not that tire......summore snorkerling is very relax one ma....unless u duno swimming.....
water rafting is very syok!!!! make sure u go to sg padas and not kiulu coz in kiulu oli level 2+.........
make sure u bring sunblock along the journey, if not, u not oli turn into balacan but charcoal!!!!!to ease the climb, instead of bring torch bring headlamp........"
So, what do you guys think?

dearest soon-to-be-bridesmaid adele,
i havent got much feedback from the others lately but i'll share wat i know :
fabian is booking huts for us at Laban Rata (halfway up KK mountain) but u must confirm ur flight 1st b4 he book extra bed for u cuz we hv to pay deposit. all 6 of us bot tikets de, waiting for ur confirmation only.
we havent decided to use mersilau trail or kk park trail to climb kk mountain. we're trying to save cost by staying outside of kk park and arrange transport to go to base climb. fabian hv to arrange both accommodation & transport b4 we decide wch route to take, cuz dunno if the van/car can take the rough road to mersilau trail. either way, we're definitely climbing dat pile of rock! :D
yes, we're going rafting on padas river for grade III-IV for better challenge as kiulu river is only grade I-II which is a more tame ride for kiddies... kekekee...
yes, we're definitely bringing lotsa suntan, sunglasses, sunburn cream, wide caps, etc to keep ourselves from turning into walking pieces of charcoals...
yes, most likely we take plan A and skip the hot springs unless we hv extra time. prescilia & myself are eager to check out d cultural museum & village to learn about d headhunters n try out traditional costumes to take pix. we're also hoping to visit d famous 5 islands (manukan, sapi, etc) for snorkeling.
i think we can iron out a final itinerary & things to bring list once fabian confirms accommodation & transport while u confirm flight plans.
looking forward but hate exercising,
ah boh

Dearest Adele, Ah Boh, Ah James et al...
2 months to your Mt K trip ...
Some tips on the preparation for the climb
1) Training for the climb
Remember that you are opting for a very strenuous 2 days up and down round trip from the base camp of about 5,000ft to the summit of 13,000 ft, a height difference of 6,000 ft. As a comparison Genting Highlands is at about 6,000ft, and Genting Sempah is at 1,000 + ft.
Training for the climb should start NOW to build up your stamina and hill climbing/descending leg muscles. Training in the gym, swimming and jogging would help but it is very important to build up your leg muscles for uphill ascent and downhill descent.
Thus, I would strongly recommend that you climb hills or stairs on weekends, the training time should be sustained for long duration like 6 hours to build up your endurance.
The favourite training grounds for folks in the Klang Valley are; Bukit Nuang (Ulu Langat), Bukit Bunga Buah(Gentings), FRIM (Kepong), Batu Caves Steps, Kiara Park and Ulu Klang hills.
Note : Some people suffer from headaches, nausea or disorientation due to mild altitude sickness at the overnight hostel at Laban Rata (3,262 meters/10,703 feet). Headache tablets and anti-nausea medications may help, but if symptoms are severe do not continue the climb. Never underestimate the mountain.
2) Stuff to bring for the trip
Trekking shoes and socks: A good pair of trekking shoes that can withstand a lot of abuse and 3 pairs socks 2 for trekking and 1 pairs for keeping your toes warm at night
Clothing: i) Warm clothing that is not too bulky, easy to put on and take off ii) track bottom iii) Wind Breaker with hood that is water proof and can also act as rain coat
Water bottle: One litre bottle there are many stops along way where you can refill the water with fresh mountain water. You may want to bring along a thermos filled with warm Milo to be savoured at the summit. Some people bring a small bottle of brandy to celebrate the success of reaching the summit.
Food: Bring high-energy bars with nuts and raisins for snatch along the way . Also lemonade flavoured hydration salts to add to your water along the way.
Torch Light: Bring one that is light and bright. A head light that can be strapped to the head is better, as youll need both your hands to grip the rope on the way up to the summit. Bring spare batteries.
Gloves: (A must) - A good high quality glove that can prevent your fingers from being frozen and at the same time flexible enough to allow your fingers to grip the ropes and manipulate the camera.
Balaclava : To protect your face from being bitten and your ears from being frozen by the chilly wind. A woolen one that can cover your entire face will be ideal, (like those use by bank robbers)
Backpacks pack everything in double plastic bags in case of rain. You may want to have another smaller backpack to carry personal effects like water bottle, snacks, telephones, torchlight, camera for your trip to the top. It would be a burden for you to bring more than that.
Face towels.
Plastic bag to pack your camera, phone in case of rain.
Medicines
Waist pouch . It will also be used during the second part of the climb.
Tissues papers and personal effects
Camera - bring spare batteries, memory cards. You wouldnt want to miss capturing the expression of euphoria at the summit of the highest mount in South East Asia
Time for action boys and girls !!
Regards,
LZ

If you are coming this way, FRIM (Forest Research Institute, Malaysia) would be a much better training ground. Have you been inside FRIM ? There are a few hills within FRIM which are suitable sites for training.
The air inside FRIM is cool throu'out the day due to the vast expanse of tropical forest cover, thus you can hike the hills anytime of the day.
If you are really keen, I help can show you around on Sundays. I stay next to FRIM and normally trek up the pine hill on Sunday mornings.
Please pm me if you need my assistance.

If you are really keen, I help can show you around on Sundays. I stay next to FRIM and normally trek up the pine hill on Sunday mornings.
Please pm me if you need my assistance.
Hi LaoZhang. I have been wanting to go FRIM since Guen Boh mentioned about it but ended up nobody was interested.
Also, I am fasting this month. So the better time for me will be in the evening starting from 5pm on Sundays.
Not sure if one of the evenings this month is ok with you. What do you think? Perhaps I should continue my running training first until next month.

Hi Malcolm and friends,
So how was your Mt K/Sabah trip ? The last I heard was that you dislocated your shoulder a week before the trip..
So did you manage to overcome your handicap and reach the peak ?
What about the rest of the gang ? Did you enjoy the trip ? How was the experience like ? Apart from climbing Mt K you also went for other adventures, right ?
Do post some notes and photos of your trip !!
Regards,
LZ

Hi Lao Zhang!
Sabah was fun! There were 6 of us from ACS - myself, James, Guen Boh, Simon Mak, Fabian and Hock Kin. The other 2 girls were Yoon and Kiat Mei.
We started our hike using the Mersilau trail at about 10am. Lao Zhang. You are right about this this trail. It is exciting to see the different species of plants and tress and of course fat squirrels! Here is a pic of us - the waterfall is in the background.

When it was almost 12pm, it started to rain. We stopped for lunch and continued with our rain coats on. It rained almost throughout our hike up to Laban Rata. There was one point after a long stretch of stairs, we saw one of Sabah's best scenery with hills and several waterfalls. I will never forget that moment. It was at this point the rain stopped too -at least temporarily.

Simon and I kept pushing hard to reach Laban Rata before dusk. We reached Laban Rata 7 hours later at about 5pm. James and Guen Boh reached an hour later just before the sun sets. Yoon, our friend, had breathing difficulty and was exposed to cold. Her progress was slow. Fabian, Kiat Mei, Hock Kin and the 2 guides had to accompany her. They reached about 8.30pm that day.
When I first reached Laban Rata, I was thrilled to continued the hike. I was fit to go except the condition of my arm and shoulder. My friends who have gone up previously advised me not to continue due to my recent injury. Nevertheless, I plan to hike again next time!
Here are some pictures we have uploaded to Facebook.
We had fruit juices somewhere in KK. We mixed all sorts of juices.

Beware! May not be suitable for drinking for some. Simon vomitted at Laban Rata after drinking untreated water from this tank.

On the way up, most of us wore shoes. I wore hiking boots when ascending and descending. Leeches!! yeah..... red one. Nice to touch but nothing to worry about. None got onto us.
Blisters. I almost had one but plastered those affected areas before I hike and while I detected sores on the way up. hehee... Those surgical plasters worked!

Thanks Malcolm for the lovely photo essay of your adventures in Sabah, in particular Mt K.
The photos brought back nostalgic memory of my trip up Mt K with the Malayan Nature Society people a few years ago..
Along Mesilau trail, the montane forest trees drapped with mossy ferns and the misty mountain in the background make one feels like being in fairy land. No wonder the Chinese call Mt K, fairy mountain.
Low's peak looks so near from Laban Rata yet just beyond your reach.. Well, that give you a good reason to go back there again !! Did the rest of the team reach the peak ?
I hope to trek up Mt K again, this time with my children in 2 to 3 years time !!

God I miss u all of u... It's been a crazy year at my new job. At times I am doing the job for 2 or 3 persons due to staff leaving and boss on maternity.
The KK trip nearly didnt happen for me cuz i gotta wrestle out approval from my boss and that took all my persuasion skills as they simply have no backup for my responsibilities. Sheeshhh... *sweat*

You know wat? Altho' i didnt reach the peak, I am not disappointed cuz believe me, the journey was so much more fun and torturous than the destination...
I mean where else can you experience such painful nerve wracking cramps, worry crazy about friends arriving late at nite & freezing to death in the rain, stunned into silence at the awesome scenery along Mersilau trail, pure anticipation of the ungodly 2am hike up from Laban Rata to the peak, scared shitless looking down the steep slopes of granite rock above Sayat Sayat, amazing sight of men & women carrying gas tanks & supplies up Timpohon trail... that's just the climb itself, not to mention the memorable experiences of island hopping, kundasang memorial visit, staying at travellers lodges, etc
it was such a great trip with friends altho disaster strikes too often... Mal shoulder dislocated b4 trip, Simon lau sai & Yoon got hypothermia on the way up mountain, it rained heavily so we're climbing 'waterfalls' of rock & soil, I got severe leg cramps and the climb down was the worst pain i ever experience in my whole life, serves me right for only one training session :p
but we're also blessed with plenty of surprises too... like when the mists slowly part to reveal a beautiful view up on the mountain, friendly squirrels 'sharing' our food, the comfortable lounge at KK park hostel with real stone fireplace, chasing various colorful fishes while snorkeling at the islands, the zen like gardens of kundasang memorial and the gondola view from the top, such fresh seafood and cultural dances while having dinner, waking up one sunday morning to a pasar tani right outside our traveller lodge doorstep...
sigh...i really miss it all, well most of it anyway, hehe... anyway for better or for worse, it was a real adventure, we shud do that more often... in fact i hv an itch for another adventure this year but that's a different thread altogether... hehe
