Open Letter and Maybe Good Bye

This is an open letter to all Forummers.. sorry for the length as it is from my heart.
It has been a wonderful investment of my time and effort to get to know about this forum for the last 3 weeks. Since the first day I found out about this website, I have spent a lot of my time to access and read the history how it came about and the contributions from members. After being a member that came with its privileges, and with some guidance from many of you, I have made even great progress to gather more information of past and present (true?) especially our friends, classmates, BGR, travels and others.

Before I proceed on, many thanks to DaBoss and the gang who managed to put the website www.acs-sitiawan.com to be on the top 3 in Google worldwide search when the “ACS Alumni” is being keyed. It make the a lot of difference, especially I have been away from Sitiawan for so long!!! This is a selfless contribution by the administrators and regular contributors which have given it a “life” that only similar minded people like us can appreciate. With some juicy sharing, comments and even good clean jokes makes the website worthy of “addiction”. It has been a wonderful journey down the memories lane especially with the pictures posted. With this website help, I managed to contact more old teachers and friends during such short period of time as compared to the last 25 years!

Many of you shared your travel, career struggles and achievements, some even the current personal lives. I am sure that some of the contributions will be inspirational to read by someone who is interested or searching. This is a healthy result of the work done for the last 4 years. The sharing and contributions have made this website a rich deposit of information regardless good and bad experience. You gave real meaning to “LOYAL PIONEER”, the appropriate name of our school magazine.

With such limited knowledge about this ACS website, I have already tried to promote it to some of my former classmates whom are not yet members. I hope in time they will do it. They asked me some very practical questions which I took for granted. Who host this website, who is paying for it, who is supporting it? If it a good Alumni website, why it is still “unofficial”? I am sorry that I really don’t know enough at this time but I am just enjoying the fruits of someone efforts. I also trust the information of this website and even allowed my children to explore it to know my student life history.

However, it also has been a sad journey to this forum as many of us came here to catch up and never come back. I am afraid that I will be one of them because I need to spend more time at my work and family. It is also sad that I missed catching up with some very old friends and members whom do not access the website during this time. We do not know when our path will cross again.

As the result, we just get everything we want to catch up and follow up the interest then just slowly fade away. This is “hangat hangat tahi ayam” attitude is real and after a while we leave without trace (bayang bayang pun tak ada). Maybe there are not enough common topics or interesting thing to talk after the catching up story. Then the challenging question is on how to make it relevant to such a wide audience ALL the time! Maybe there should be a topic opened just for the focal point where we talk about ACS alone and its current happenings.

Let us think on how make the encounter of the website is more than just another one passing moments that we “happen” to come across as we journey through life. No matter where we are now and whatever things we are doing now, be it a career or homemaker….. we have a common cause that is ..… be re-connected to our common history…and connecting with people with similar background.

ACS has mould and prepared us for the future; and here we are today in many parts of the world! But we started from the same school in one small geographical area. We are the results of our parents, headmasters, teachers and well wishers whom have committed, dedicated and trusted the school to develop us. It is here where we started to develop our life principles, beliefs, faith, character and hope during those memorable days. I do not want to wait for another 25 years to catch up again. By them, the friendship and zeal to keep in touch will fade away and eventually goes with us, just like the OPA now. Therefore, I hope this Alumni will replace where OPA has failed and evoke similar feelings.

Physically of going back to Sitiawan on regular basis is no longer the solution to many of us. The call to renew ACS Sitiawan friendship and relationship will slowly replace by others. With the globalised world we are in today, all of us are subject to the pressures and demands which are very different when I was in ACS 20 years ago.

With this Alumni website, we have a unique and common tool to connect with many generations of students. Probably, many of us hope those younger ones like left school after 2000 will search like the way we did and find this Forum useful to them. The current students can share as well and seek information or guidance. Also, when they leave school, they will have an automatic link to be an Alumni! We will just grow. Then this is a opportunity for us to be renewed by staying connected!

Some of us have shared the cry of need, tears of tragedy, joy of success or life endless unfairness. Whatever it is, these sharing will have a better chance of finding a helping hand or laughter through this Alumni network. In the process it will make the website more attractive to visit again in the future. This outpouring of selfless spirit will make any ACSian of CTA1 be encouraged to strive for greater heights.

Our journey through this life after leaving the school is very varied and different due to many reasons. Today, some of you have become big time surgeons, doctors, lawyers, homemakers, teachers, businessmen, activists, or anything. Maybe, we can volunteer to become career counsellors to the current ACS students. Maybe, we create essay competitions for the student to write something based on the information they gathered from this Alumni website and Alumni members to vote on it and find the winner!

We need something relevant to our current era and use the latest but affordable technology to socialise in the “virtual” or cyberspace and still do something for the school. Is something else out there that is a better alternative? I do not think so!

But something is very special here…… that you guys has develop… a website with a spirit of ACS SITIAWAN meaning in it! We can do something to rebuild the connection between our beloved ACS Sitiawan and its Alumni. Not just spiritually but also physically. Let everyone (the past, the present and the future students) knows that they can count on us.

Dato, you should see us in the early days, i tell you, i think that time, productivity of the forummers drop to like 5%. But just drop in 5 mins and peek around once a while. Don't have to stay whole day here. :)

Like what others say, just pop in once in a while and I'm sure sometimes ppl will notice if you have been absent for too long, and they will 'page' for you. Here in the forum, everyone plays 'favouritism' also, hehe.. ie when you post something, and they by-pass your post without answering you.. don't take it to heart. It could mean, they don't understand you, they don't know how to reply you, or at the worst, they don't like you. hehe.. but who cares, here in the forum, everyone has a voice and I'm sure every person's opinion counts, somehow.

So, just pop in once in a while when you can. That way, you are already helping to support this forum. =)

The forum is the CNN of ACS Sitiawan. Can come and read everyday the siao postings and news. If not free, read it the next day, if next day not free, read it the next next day.....if everythings else fails, read on weekends. If this weekend kenot, read next weekend.

Whether its goodbye or not, the Forum will always be here unless daBoss pulls the plug.....errr....no money to pay for domain...:p rain or shine or thundetstorm or snowstorm, it will always be here.

Like what others had said, drop in whenever u have
the time too. Everyone has his/her own career and
family to think of, and that is understood. It's normal
for the "hangat-hangat tahi ayam" attitude. In real
life, we don't even stay glued to our friends everyday.
But as long as we do remember and take the initiative
to keep in touch every now and then, that should be
good enough. So no goodbyes here, but "hellos" and
"Hi, I'm back, what's up?", is always welcome. :D

Dear Datokuan,

Although we don't know each other well, I have always enjoy your lively posts greatly and I believe our fellow forummers also share the same enthusiasm. After reading thru your 'open heart' letter, it really demotivate me for a while.....as previously I had the same 'bidding goodbye' thoughts for a couple of time due to personal reasons. Although I'm only a homemaker, at times I also find it hard to divide my time between forumming and tending to my family matters. But, I hold back because deep down in my heart I know this will be a loss for me if I leave. Where else can I re-establish friendship and keep in touch with long lost friends and make new friends constantly? Undoubtedly it is this forum!

Therefore, I have a sincere request for you.....please don't just quit and abandon us forever.

I/We cherish your presence just like we cherish our other seniors like Sir Cucuan, Oddfather, Chris, Ody and others. Like what the others have said, you can drop in anytime at your own convenient. We hope for your good news and comeback!

I will try to come back as often as I can.....sad that I need to reduce my presence as my workload is piling up.. next month I will have to do business review and 2008 budget, then we are mid spring now... my family outdoors life going to start very soon... so how to get internet connection in the bush?

just see the serene camp site waiting for us to explore..... this was taken last summer when a few families decided to go camping and fishing... no mobile phone an electricity.....so no light, internet and TV....

I remembered when we were in Standard Six most of us would go around asking for our schoolmates to pen down a few words in our colorful autograph book towards the end of the term. It's like we will never see each other anymore.

Its jus like catching up wif an old fren after we part away for some time...

I used to be an addict...so much so that people were predicting i'll hit 10,000 posts in no time haha...but this forum helped preserve my sanity yrs back. Though i was a student (of coz i had to study & i did...else i'd nvr be here today) the forum was a respite for me =)
And the frenz i make...thou i may not keep in touch much or get to catch up wif them much nowdays in the forum..i treasure each and every one i've met thru this forum & look forward to catching up again sumtime 'soon'.

Very moving and touching words Dato Kuan. I am particularly interested when you mentioned about career counselors for the kids in skool. It would very much be worth the while to contribute to the kids what we or at least I didn't have during my days. But this is not Good bye hey? Not cleber... jus walked down the memory lane with you and actually I am quite proud of my Lumut/Sitiawan heritage and association with ACS ... we really exposed to multi cultural things in the harmonious way....... u noe this cross cultural appreciation has helped me a lot in my travelling career......

However, I still miss finding someone out there will share my all time favorite of Alley Cats and Sudirman songs..... anyone can help me???

BTW, please tell ur boy boy to appreciate u more each day or else.... this dato will fly up from Down Under to hantam him!!! Jus say hi for me please and let him know I am waiting here for him to get Anushia's contact details.
