There's something to be said about the effort she put in to achieve what she did. If it was something so common it would not be a story worth mentioning. So I say Syabas!....and dont let anything belittle the accomplishment that you have managed to reach for yourself.

there is a difference in the attitude of those who study to LEARN, as opposed to those who study to get a GRADE.

Nadiah gets only 18 As instead

By TEH ENG HOCK

BATU PAHAT: Nadiah Amirah Jamil, who was widely speculated to have scored 19 1As in the SPM examination, obtained 14 1As, four 2As and one 3B instead.

The SMK Tun Sardon student had even written two books to record her achievement. The first, Diari Nadiah, is due to be released at the end of the month while the second, Meniti Kecermelangan, should be out by the middle of the year.

Outstanding achievement: Nadiah showing her results slip to her father Jamil Omar and mother Zakiah Zakariah yesterday.
Even buntings congratulating Nadiah on her “19 As achievement” were hung on street lamps around Rengit town.

Nadiah, 18, said she was not satisfied with the results but would put the disappointment behind her.

“I will accept the results in good faith. The important thing is that I have given my full effort in the SPM.” She scored 1As in Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Science, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Islamic Studies, Principles of Accounts, Commerce, Tasawwur Islam, Al-Quran and As-Sunnah studies, and Islamiah Syariah studies.

The subjects in which she scored 2As were Biology, Additional Mathematics, Economics and Malay Literature. The 3B was in English for Science and Technology.

Nadiah had earlier wanted to take up art and engineering drawing as well.

“But my parents discouraged me from doing so .”

Asked if the sale of her books might be affected because of the less than perfect SPM scores, she said: “I do not think it will be badly affected. The books will be published. We must take risks.”

Nadiah said she has applied for a government scholarship to study pharmacy in Britain.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi felt that an apology from Utusan Malaysia was in order as it did not report Nadiah's situation correctly.

“The newspaper really carried her up, giving her hope that she would score 19 As but she only got 14 As. I think the newspaper should apologise as it has embarrassed her.

“She never said she would get 19 As. Nobody would be able to tell until the results come out,” he said, adding that he felt sorry for her.

Abdullah said Nadiah's academic achievement was outst

Well, acs s'wan record holder will be the one and only Young Su Ling, with 16 As. Since the max will only be 12 from this yr on, so this record will remain. :)

It was published that the ministry did not go on with the plans of limiting the subjects to 12.. therefore Su Ling's record may still be surpassed.

ACS values SPM results according to number of As.. but the national ranking system or if you're applying for scholarships, 15A1 and 1A2 comes after the list of straight A1s.... that means even a straight 9A1 is ranked ahead of her. That is why the top student in Perak is a straight 14A1 girl from Ipoh and not her.

Thus, her decision to appeal was a right one to take but if its the case of A2 appealing to be changed into A1, the chances are VERY slim because I've never heard any of these cases being successful...

Anyhow, Su Ling's target should be JPA scholarships for medicine so her A2 in Basic Economy won't do much of a damage i think... At least she won't have to come here (Indonesia)....

hmm my view on things...chee eng's results was quite surprising..he was getting a bit too involved in school near the exams...maybe same thing could be said bout peixuan??

matriculation has always been a bone of contention..it's comparing apples and oranges but what to do that is the government's decision. that's y it's always better to go for matricuation if you can getin...having said that, education in malaysia isn't up to par...i've recommended to tance to apply to Singapore (no harm trying, just waste a fewdollars)...and i think he has a good chance of getting into Singapore.

Skool sys in Sg is still MARGINALLY BETTER off compared to Msia and what more Tertiary ed.........

But then, I have even heard of lotsa complaints of ppl I know who went into ASEAN Scholarships after F3 or 5 leh! (The complain beh tahan due to BOTH peer and teachers' pressure)

With this new system of 4 subjects compared to those days where we had to take 5 subjects. How would you rate a result with 1 A and 3 B?

Sg has high standards + pressure esp for Sec & JC level - the teachers are required to get students (all students) to hand in homework - which leads to a culture shock - msian students : "my teachers havent chased me for hw since pri school!! sheesh ...*grumble* ".

also, sg based v much on exam results - even from PSLE (UPSR) onwards the students are streamed into schools (lousy results --> "bad" schools). Each year, students can get retained by the school for lousy end year results - tho if ur a scholar, ud get kicked back - sometimes after a 3 mth "probation", sometimes not.

hence the pressure.

yeah... was expecting worse... as for pei xuan, I dunno... I expected her to make the straight A list. She's very unhappy with what she got... I heard that because of the one A she missed she can't get scholarship for medic in m'sia.

I'm not too sure whether it's scholarship or acceptance, but I suspect both... yes, the koku makes up 10%, but still... I guess it's very dang hard to get in, esp when she wants medic...
