Just need to roast the turkey, get the mashed potatoes done, and bake a chiffon cake. It went well, had lots of leftover too. How are things going? I'm swamped as usual...taking 4 classes this quarter, instead of the usual 3, and doing the field placement option for a course paper. Had our first meeting with the local police dept today, very interesting. I was really impressed - they really know their stuff...crime prevention efforts like defensible space, CP through environmental design, displacement, and diffusion of benefits, etc. Very professional and serious about working on specific problems. Well, we'll be helping them with data analysis, research and other things...

from the photos i've seen in class, usually half the head or face is gone, and blood, hair/scalp, skull pieces & brain matter are splattered everywhere especially behind the exit point of the bullet. depends on the type of firearm and ammo used...sometimes the whole head is blasted off. there were a couple of cases where there actually were multiple self-inflicted gunshot wounds!!! apparently, the guy tried shooting through the mouth...but it didn't kill him, then tried again by shooting under the chin, didn't work either; the final was at the temple.

ugh....ok, enough gory stuff. there's always a psychological effect no matter how hard one tries not to think about it.

and yes, i'm throwing a much-needed pizza party on Friday to celebrate the end of term! having some friends over for chicken satay and pizza. a friend will bring indian food, and the others will bring other food, soda and dessert, so it'll be fun. :D need to chill after the stressful past few weeks!

It's a myth locum doctors make nice big bucks. We are getting only GBP35/hr, while more junior doctors get even less. After income tax, it may not be worth doing.

Agree that GPs get a lot more. In a paper recently, a Polish doctors fly over from Poland to locum at a rate of GBP200/hour. Nurses get paid about GBP100/hour, or at least more than me.

Of course it's not about money solely, but one has to take into account all the factors in life. Difficult to survive-lah. The option would be to move out of London and live in a remote village.:p

It's a myth locum doctors make nice big bucks. We are getting only GBP35/hr, while more junior doctors get even less. After income tax, it may not be worth doing.

Agree that GPs get a lot more. In a paper recently, a Polish doctors fly over from Poland to locum at a rate of GBP200/hour. Nurses get paid about GBP100/hour, or at least more than me.

Of course it's not about money solely, but one has to take into account all the factors in life. Difficult to survive-lah. The option would be to move out of London and live in a remote village.:p

Over here, on call $350Cad/hr for docs..... specialists here earn ranges from $79000 (she took 1/2 year off) to $over 3 million a year.. depends on the specialty. And because of the severe shortage of bodies now, everyone is fully booked and on waitlist.
