KUYT AND PENNANT KEEP REDS ON THE UP

First half goals from Dirk Kuyt and Jermaine Pennant have given Liverpool an excellent 2-0 victory over Chelsea in Rafa Benitez's 100th Premiership game at Anfield on Saturday.

Liverpool continued the fine Premiership form that has now seen them take 24 points out of a possible 27 after Dirk Kuyt's ninth goal of the season was added to by a brilliant first for the club for Jermaine Pennant.

This match was billed as the first leg of a weekend that would see the top four 'go to war', and Liverpool won the first battle after they put Chelsea to the sword with two goals in a dominant opening 18 minutes.

The Reds flew at Chelsea from the first whistle and they took the lead after just four minutes through Dirk Kuyt. Injuries to Ricardo Carvalho and John Terry had forced Jose Mourinho into a makeshift defence and Kuyt wasted no time taking advantage as his first touch fooled Ferreira and gave him the chance to beat Petr Cech from eight yards.

Chelsea were visibly shaken and a superb pass from Xabi Alonso put Riise one on one with Cech, and although Cech saved well, there was to be to be no respite for Chelsea because Jermaine Pennant made it 2-0 with his first Liverpool goal in the 18th minute.

It came when Essien could only half clear Gerrard's cross and when the ball fell to Pennant on the right edge of the penalty area, he chested the ball down before smashing an unstoppable right footed volley into the roof of the net.

It was a wonderful moment for Pennant and Anfield rose to acclaim it, but perhaps more importantly, it was a hammer blow to Chelsea because they rarely threatened to or looked likely to overturn the deficit it produced.

As you'd expect, Chelsea came into the game a lot more in the second half, but it was still Liverpool who were creating the better goal scoring chances and Peter Crouch worked Cech again when he got his head to Pennant's 58th minute cross.

John Arne Riise has made a habit of scoring special goals against Chelsea, but he would have eclipsed them all if his 61st minute 35 yard rocket hadn't smashed back of the crossbar. Peter Crouch tried to convert the rebound as Riise and most of Anfield stood with their hands on their heads.

Chelsea continued to toil away as you'd expect defending Champions to do, but they couldn't make an impact and Pepe Reina will have enjoyed one of his quieter days. And at the other end it took some fine second half defending from Paulo Ferreira and Michael Essien to keep the scoreline at 2-0.

Liverpool can now enjoy a well earned rest in the knowledge that they are definitely on the up after another impressive win.

I didn’t mean just them’

LIVERPOOL boss Rafael Benitez has tried to diffuse the row over his ‘small club’ jibe at Everton by insisting it was not just the Blues he was refering to.

Benitez’s remark following Saturday’s Merseyside derby 0-0 draw enraged Everton and their fans.

But Benitez launched a explanation which claimed that he was referring to all clubs outside the top four who come to Anfield and not just Everton.

“It ’s easy for me to explain what I’ve said, said Benitez.

“I’ve read lots of comments from Bill Shankly over the years where he’s made comments which compared Liverpool as a club to other teams.

I’ve done it on this occasion.

“I’m the manager of Liverpool and I was simply comparing our club to most other clubs who come to Anfield.

“We are in a position where we are trying to compete with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal while for other teams and managers that’s more difficult.

Benitez said the top four are considered the biggest clubs in the Premiership and even managers from other teams accept it is different for them when they play against the bigger teams.

Rafa also trying to get some media attention too???

Liverpool agree takeover terms
Liverpool have announced to the Stock Exchange they have agreed to an offer from American tycoons George Gillett and Tom Hicks to buy the club.

The club have stated they have agreed the terms "of a recommended cash offer" to be made by Kop Football Limited, the American pair's bid vehicle.

The statement read: "The offer is £5,000 in cash for each Liverpool Share, valuing the issued share capital of Liverpool at approximately £174.1million.

"Together with the £44.8million of net debt in the club as at December 31 2006, this represents an enterprise value for Liverpool of £218.9 million."

Commenting on the offer, David Moores, chairman of Liverpool told the club's official website: "I believe this is a great step forward for Liverpool, its shareholders and its fans. This club is my passion and forms a huge part of my life.

"After much careful consideration, I have agreed to sell my shares to assist in securing the investment needed for the new stadium and for the playing squad.

"I urge all my fellow shareholders to do the same and to support the offer. By doing so, I believe you will be backing the successful future of Liverpool Football Club.

"I am also delighted to accept the offer from the Hicks and Gillett families to continue my involvement in the Club by becoming Honorary Life President."

Rick Parry, chief executive of Liverpool, commented: "This is great for Liverpool, our supporters and the shareholders - it is the beginning of a new era for the club.

"The partnership created by George and Tom is very special. They are bringing to the table tremendous and relevant experience, a passion for sport, real resources and a strong commitment to the traditions of Liverpool. Their approach represents exactly the sort of genuine partnership that Liverpool has been seeking over recent times.

"We know that George and Tom want a long-term relationship with Liverpool and that they also understand the importance of investing in our success both on and off the field. They have made clear their intention to move as quickly as practicable on the financing and construction of our proposed new stadium at Stanley Park and also to support investment in the playing squad.

"This has been an important time for the club. We now have the right partners for the future. I am absolutely certain we have now ended up in the right place, with owners who will help the club succeed and prosper."

Commenting on the offer, George Gillett and Tom Hicks said: "Liverpool is a fantastic club with a remarkable history and a passionate fanbase. We fully acknowledge and appreciate the unique heritage and rich history of Liverpool and intend to respect this heritage in the future.

"The Hicks family and the Gillett family are extremely excited about continuing the Club's legacy and tradition.

"We are particularly pleased that David Moores and Rick Parry will have a continuing involvement in the Club. For us continuity and stability are keys to the future."

Arrangements over the future of Liverpool's new stadium appear to have clinched the deal. Not only has Hicks built up a reputation for developing state-of-the-art stadia for his teams, but the duo have now guaranteed that Liverpool's new Stanley Park ground would not be shared with other teams.

In Gillett's original approach, when he was considering a solo takeover, he had indicated he wanted a ground-share arrangement to cut costs and maximise income.

Hicks and Gillett will split the £470million cost of taking over the club on a 50-50 basis, with around £255million going to buy the shareholding and take over the £80million debt, and a further £215million on the stadium.

The takeover means Liverpool, Manchester United and Aston Villa will all be in American hands.

Malcolm Glazer, owner of American football's (NFL) Tampa Bay Buccaneers, owns United and Randy Lerner, owner of NFL's Cleveland Browns, bought Aston Villa last year.

That's what happen if Benitez put gerrard wide to the right. If gerrard is at his usual central midfielder sure the result will not be the same as it has been proven in the past games.

Putting gerrard on the right gave scholes too much room to move instead. But its a really good game as liverpool played the attacking 3-5-2 and MU played the usual 4-4-2. Hope the boys are not too taken with unlucky loss:crying: and prepare well for the Barca match!

Well said. Controlling a game for 90 odd minutes is good but not enough. WE need a clinical finisher. Bellamy has pace while Kuyt has amazing work rate but both are not clinical finisher. Crouch has got...height!The only striker who has the finishing is God (R. Fowler) but he is not at his prime anymore or maybe he just hasn't had enough matches.

Benitez really have to buy some quality players already. He have to stop buying cheap average players ....Mark gonzalez and pennant(seriously inconsistent) are not up to the mark to cover either side of the wings. Kuyt, Bellamy and Crouch are not 18-20 goals a season type. Mascherano blended well to provide defence and support for gerrard and xabi to roam free tho....but only 40 over million pound for next season...who to buy these days??? Morientes is a failure at anfield, maybe can try to get his partner David villa instead????? Hmmm........

Give him 10 games, then back to clutches again.

Frankly, he's too injury prone. Maybe that's Rafael didn't want to buy him back when he had the chance to do so. Of course the money factor was another reason for not buying him back to Liverpool. You just don't pay so much for a player to sit on the bench, right?

He was red carded when Werder Bremen was leading Espanyol 1-0 in this morning's UEFA Cup 2nd leg. His sending off costed Werder Bremen a place in the UEFA Cup final. In the end, Werder Bremen was beaten 1-2.

I agree he is a great striker, with the striker's instinct. Always at the right place at the right time.

However, read report yesterday that he has agreed to join Bayern Munich next season. Very unlikely for him to join Liverpool as Liverpool does not spend so much in buying one player.

GATTUSO DISMISSES `LONG-BALL` REDS
AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has dismissed Champions League final opponents Liverpool as a "long ball" side.

Gattuso and his team-mates saw off Manchester United in the semi-finals this week to set up a repeat of the 2005 final, when Liverpool recovered from 3-0 down at half-time to win on penalties.

Of the two sides, former Rangers midfielder Gattuso believes United are the better team and accused Liverpool of using outdated tactics.

He said: "I feel there is a noticeable difference in talent between Manchester United and Liverpool and that we have beaten the better side of the two.

"United have far more technical players, who are quick and able to do things on the ball. Liverpool do not have those individuals.

"What they have is a way of playing as a team. They are like an Italian team of 10 years ago. All they try to do is defend together, with everybody behind the ball and just one striker. Every ball is a long ball."

The war of words has started!!

Good Luck Liverpool!!!

Thats called startegy. why injure key players in a match that has no point. win or loose we finish 3rd/4th and CL next year.

I did watch the game. some good things came out of it. Good to see Kewell play again. Although he didn't score, Fowler still has the moves. Gonzales like all other games still looked lost! Maybe we should play him against Milan to confuse them. No one knows what he is doing on the field.

Cut-price Owen could be going
Michael Owen could be on his way out of Newcastle after it emerged a £9million release clause will kick in at the end of the season.

According to reports in Wednesday's newspapers, the England striker's contract states that he can leave the club for a cut-price transfer fee if the Tyneside club fail to qualify for Europe.

The clause was included as part the deal which brought Owen to St James' Park in a £16million move from Real Madrid in August 2005 and will be activated by Newcastle's lowly Premiership finish this season.

Liverpool and Chelsea are all thought to be monitoring the situation and would be able to offer Owen Champions League football and a more realistic chance of winning silverware.

9 million for Owen okay lah. Hopefully he has gone through the injury phase. Pool still lacks a fast pace forward. Bellamy somehow did not show the pace that he had with the barcodes and blackburn. With God most likely not given another year , I would prefer we sell Bellamy, buy Owen and forward. With Owen fit, he will guarantee at least 15 to 18 goals a season.

EPL Title is Anfield ambition - Stevie
Steven Gerrard insists Liverpool must launch a genuine title challenge next season, insisting the Reds "haven't been good enough" this year.

Rafael Benitez's side finished third behind champions Manchester United and runners-up Chelsea, but the points difference was 21 and 15 respectively - a gap the 26-year-old finds unacceptable.

He said: "We can't escape the fact that, in the league, this season we haven't been good enough.

"You ask the manager, or me, or indeed any of the players in our dressing room and they will all say exactly the same thing.

"We had bigger ambitions for this season than the Champions League. We always had one eye on Europe because it is so prestigious and a tournament that has always served us well, but we also wanted the league flag flying back at Anfield and felt we were in a good position to have a real go."

"The league is always your bread and butter as a Liverpool player and we're not far away," he added.

HAHA!! and you Pool fans says the EPL is not important :p

yeah, cheer up pool fans... no need to be so sad, this game was already predicted for AC win, you should know it.

Rafa was hoping for AC to lead by 3-0 in 1st half and then perform a fight back but did not happened. Rafa said the ref blew the whistle to early by 15 sec as he knew Pool would have level the game in the last 15 sec. what a dramatic ending.

Conclusion, Pool wanted to be Euro King but was not good enough. End up with no silverware this year. CL 2nd spot is all they have this season. Should have focused on the League Cup instead. hahaha! This is a sure class of overconfidence and over focused on 1 competition...

Pool's offside trap backfired and Inzaghi pop in the 2nd goal, after that AC was partying already. And Pool tot they could fight back like what they did in 2005.

nevermind lah...its their turn to take revenge for not qualifying to the finals mah....Anyway the whole world is watching 2 BEST european teams fighting!

But anyway..jerry you're right...i watched the game and first half liverpool were creating a lot of chances but dida was in top form. Mascherano....i'm really glad he came to anfield...he's the man to watch next season. He is amazing...covered kaka really well..and win the ball from him many times like taking candy from a kid. Ref was quite biased...many fouls went in favour of milan.

First goal was a flukie. Supposed to be hand ball but ref buta. The second was a good goal as inzaghi and kaka timed it really well to beat the offside trap. No doubt. Pool's goal came quite late despite creating the most chances. Crouchie came in late. Pennant was in dazzling form giving the defence a torrid time on the right flank.

But on the left side...kewell again disapointed with him play like amateur:( -zenden was better. alonso, gearrard, pennant and kuyt all left their shooting boots at home.
Gerrard not that effective playing second striker to kuyt instead of attcking mid where he will usually let fly 1 or 2 trademark long shots.

During the final minutes milan deliberately wasted time and the ref blew the final whistle before 3 minutes was up. I mean i know....few seconds is nothing but at least let ppl play their game lah...at least we lose in satisfactory... but to be exact the game ended 1 minute earlier taking into account the time wasting by milan's antics. Rafa was really mad at the ref even i was shocked cos the whistle blew much earlier....

We had the heart and spirit and milan had skillful players

exciting, balanced, game tho we lost to a more skillful side.

Eto'o admits Liverpool admiration

Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o has admitted 'it would be wonderful' to play in front of the Kop for Liverpool. ;)

The Cameroon striker, 26, has been linked to the Reds in recent weeks, with manager Rafael Benitez said to have placed him at the top of his summer shopping list.

The cameroonian has over and over expressed his interest in playing for Liverpool since before joining Barca. I will be suprised if he's not playing for Liverpool next season. We should buy him. He's knocking on our door for goodness sake! Rafa is also thinking of bringing David villa wonder how it goes...

Florent Malouda Lyon's winger is also coming next season to replace zenden\kewell. Yeay! finally! Not much can be done since our transfer kitty is not as big as MU or Chelsea:crying: . MU has already spent 50 million pound on three players.

'Liverpool fans are the worst in Europe'

LONDON, June 3 (Reuters) - Liverpool supporters have been identified as the worst behaved at European matches in a report to be handed by UEFA to the British Government in Brussels on Tuesday.

The report, which has been compiled by undercover police agents from a neutral European force over the last four years, will be given by UEFA president Michel Platini to British sports minister Richard Caborn.

UEFA spokesman William Gaillard told Reuters: 'The incidents involving Liverpool fans have been well known to us before the trouble at the Champions League final which involved Liverpool fans last week.

'That was just the latest example. What other set of fans steal tickets from their fellow supporters or out of the hands of children? We know what happened in Athens, and Liverpool fans were the cause of most of the trouble there.

'There have been 25 incidents involving Liverpool fans away from home since 2003 and these are in the report -- most teams' supporters do not cause any trouble at all.'

Problems occurred at the Champions League final when fans with forged tickets and even without any ticket gained entry to the Olympic Stadium for the match against AC Milan, while dozens of fans with genuine tickets were refused entry.

When Liverpool fans did try to gain entry the situation threatened to escalate out of control and the Greek police fired tear gas and used batons.

Liverpool have submitted their own report to UEFA which criticises the security arrangements for the final.

Gaillard added: 'You must ask yourself why at the same match, with the same conditions, there was no trouble with the Milan fans - only the Liverpool fans.'

Liverpool fans were held responsible for the disaster at the 1985 European Cup final at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels when 39 mainly Italian fans died after a wall collapsed following a charge by Liverpool fans before the match against Juventus.

The tragedy led to English clubs being banned from European competition for five years.

No blame for Liverpool fans, says Platini

BRUSSELS, June 5 (Reuters) - Liverpool fans cannot be blamed for the trouble at the Champions League final in Athens two weeks ago and are not the worst behaved in Europe, UEFA president Michel Platini told Reuters on Tuesday.

Asked whether Liverpool supporters caused the fracas at some of the entry gates before the match against AC Milan at the Olympic Stadium, Platini replied: 'No we cannot say that, we cannot point the finger.

Reds to splash £58m on Torres

Liverpool could be forced to splash out around £58million to land Fernando Torres after it was reported the striker wants £100,000 per week.

According to The Sun, the striker wants a six-year deal worth £31.2million to move to Anfield - and that comes on top of the £27million transfer fee the Reds are expected to pay Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish side apparently want £24million up front for their star player and also want Liverpool to fund a pay-off in the region of £3million which is due to Torres under the terms of his Atletico contract.

The 23-year-old, who is not due back from holiday until July 7, is also holding out for a huge wage deal and his advisors reportedly want him to become the club's second highest earner behind captain Steven Gerrard.

Inter Milan are preparing to swoop if the Premier League side refuse to meet Torres' demands and the interest of the Italian champions could force Reds owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to stretch their summer transfer budget to get their man.

The Sun also claims Liverpool midfielder Luis Garcia has agreed a £3.36million switch in the opposite direction - but it is thought that deal will go through even if the Torres transfer breaks down.

Is Torres worth that much??

elvin
07-03-2007, 11:03 PM
The move is reported to be 27mil pound which is a release clause. After selling off Luis Garcia(whose life has been wretched with injuries thru out the season...boy we reds are going to miss him...) the whole deal comes to around 21 mill pound...which is stil a good deal! Mind you...nistelrooy + veron + ferdinand is already 80 mil pound!

As for the wage its understandable, cos the player of his calibre who has been club captain for Atletico Madrid since his teenage years and among the top scorers in spanish league...its not a suprise if he wanted 100k a week. But finally he agreed to 90k a week which is still far from the likes of lampard, gerrard....etc who generate around 120k a week.

Is he good or not??? Track & scoring feats from back home doesnt mean it will be the same too in england...look at what happened to shevchenko... For me i would jus pray that THIS FERNANDO TORRES WOULD NOT BE ANOTHER FERNANDO MORIENTES! But he is what we need to be more physical and tough in attack.

But if you ask me if he's a better deal than michael carrick(18.6 mil pound for what?)...i would definitely raise both hands up and say yes!

Still we are short of winger and which i believe florent malouda(player of the year france) which is rafa's top choice winger deal is already koyak!!! kena sapu by chelsea! The one to blame is the UPSTAIRS people in liverpool managment. One of them is Rick PArry the chief executive who do nothing but empty talking....also gone is david villa, daniel alves....simao sambrosa...and others...all koyak! thanks to RICK PARRY...i think MU fans can relate this to Peter Kenyon with the Ronaldinho saga...

But we finally break the pantang! YIPEE!!! liverpool never spend more than 20 million for a player which we shud be proud off...Hope to see more signings of top class quality players!! Oh by the way...previous signings like andriy voronin and others...thay are just passer by...apart of a free transfer and some new budak budak...nothing to shout about.. The management need to speed things up and cut the red tapes in order to get players in

Aaah....i really hope the mancini deal will go through then our left wing will be well covered. Really love to see him wearing the reds shirt next season. As Roma turned down Reds offer worth 13 mil pound.... then move in for Daniel alves followed by Heinze main target to cover for riise...

Spain striker Fernando Torres has described Liverpool as a “club of champions” and promised that he too wants to be a champion.

Torres, who was unveiled to media on Wednesday, told Liverpoolfc.tv: "This was the biggest decision of my footballing life but this is a club of champions - one of the biggest there is. I now want to play my part in that and be a champion too.

Ever noticed something similar in liverpool players??? They love to play for the club.

Boss Rafa Benitez has hailed club record signing Fernando Torres for his “passion” for Liverpool, as he revealed that the talismanic Atletico Madrid forward had snubbed clubs “offering more money” to arrive on Merseyside.

The 23-year-old Spain international was a reported target for Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. However, the Reds boss disclosed that Torres was only focussed on a move to Anfield irrespective of the comparative lesser pay on offer.

"We needed to work hard because there were other clubs who wanted him that we knew about - other clubs offering more money.

"But the player said straight away 'I want to join Liverpool'. He said we were his first choice and that was the key for me.

"He has taken a pay cut to come here. Okay he is still on a very good contract because he is a top player. But to be a successful club you need players with passion and Fernando has passion."

ARGENTINA defender Gabriel Heinze is ready to take the Devils by their horns!

The in-form leftback, who shone for the Albiceleste in the recent Copa America in Venezuela, is considering seeking legal action to force Manchester United to allow him to make his dream move to Liverpool.
It has been claimed Heinze’s representatives are thinking of going to court after United refused to sanction a move to Anfi eld, even though their rivals matched the £6 million (RM41.3m) asking price.

Reports claimed Heinze has a letter signed by United chief executive David Gill claiming he would be free to leave for £6 million, although it may not be the case that this clause is formally written in his contract.

United manager Alex Ferguson said earlier this week: “I can assure you, Liverpool will not be getting Heinze.

“We can put that to bed right now and we have done so. We have had a couple of offers for him and we have turned them down.” Heinze has also been linked with moves to major clubs in Spain and Italy.

He is very much in demand again thanks to his sterling display in the Copa, where he helped Argentina to the fi nal, only to lose 3-0 to Brazil.

However, there has been no reports of any concrete activity on the interest from Spanish and Italian clubs and that will only increase Heinze’s desire to be allowed to move to Anfi eld.

If Heinze does sign for the Reds, he will have the company of fellow Argentina international, defensive midfi elder Javier Mascherano.

Voronin really exceeded way beyond my expectations! looks like this old man not only have experience but can score too..! not bad...
Best goal of the lot was from Babel.
Kuyt was his usual self...running around the pitch like he lost his underwear... Pennant was giving derby defenders some afternoon football classes on how to dribble and pass the ball.
Reina was having a nap between the posts with occasional alarms but nothing serious...
Overall we were on fire in all departments! This year is definitely REDS year! :)

Liverpool main worry would not be MU this season but will be arsenal young guns which i said in last season they will excel even without henry. So MU can keep on dreaming about being Liverpool main threat. hehehe:D

Of course, Liverpool has never been in the same class with MU and the scenario will be the same this year as last season, Pool will be way below MU in the EPL table come Jan 08. Pool has never been a threat for MU.

MU never dream, we just play attractive football. :p

Pool was brought down to earth by Pompey tonite... Killer Pompey, they always play well against top 4 teams. Pool could have lost if Pompey scored the penalty. What happened lar?? Over confident, kept Torres, Gerard and Babel on the bench??

MU is catching up......:D on level points now...

OMG! what was benitez thinking.... starting without torres in attack? This result pisses me off! 19 shots vs 5 shots but none found the net. Teams like birmingham should be a walkover. Derby swallowing another drubbing. This time by arsenal 5-0. Now Arse sitting comfortably on top of the league:mad:

Good observation!! Keep it up.... :D Rafa believes in rotation. We are not complaining....

Yeah, Arse is on the roll now. Fabragas scored in 6 consecutive games.. and Adebayor is back on the scoring sheet...:( Very interesting game on Star Sport vs the game played on ESPN at 10pm Sat night. :p

"Well done Rafa, we Liverpool-supporters should be ever grateful that you have kept an unbeaten run so far this season. Very well done. And good job keeping Torres on the bench. He will be fresh come May next year. Well I suppose he will be fresh come summerbreak. And with all your rotation its good to see that you keep one player on the field everytime. The incredible Arbeloa. He is good both defensively and offensively. Marvelous player. Hmm. Isnt it time to quit Benitez? "

Agree or Disagree??

Nobody knows what benitez is thinking. His rotation policy will backfire him if some of the players grow impatient. Of course cannot be denied that he has a soft spot for Champions League-thus making him resting important players for important matches. But for me i would like to see crouch/babel getting more games under his belt rather than voronin who is already a veteran.

Benitez-quit? No way.

My view is that do away with the rotation system. The club's main goal is the EPL forget CL and the others. We paid 20 plus million pounds for Torres and since he is playing well he should play in every PL game. He is paid to play for us as many games as possible. Forget rotation, each time we rotate, the players have to change the style of play or tactics. Rotation should only come in when there are injuries/suspension or significant drop in form for the first 11. Choose the best 11 and play them every week. The other players should understand that the success of the club is bigger than the individual's need to play.

Man U is a good example of always playing their best 11 (unless injury comes into play). Rafa will one day be judged on his rotation policy and it could cause him his job but for now since he is the manager, In Rafa We Trust!
