View Full Version : Pickup Truck

Been looking around pickup-trucks lately. Apparently, they have evolved from being a jungle/construction yard type of vehicles to something more on-road, more like SUVs but with better fuel consumption (diesel) and much cheaper to boot.

A few that starting to look more like SUV instead of pickups, Toyota Hilux (new ones) and Mitsubishi Triton. Isuzu D-max and Nissan Frontiers are worth mentioning also.

Anyone has any experience with them? The only setback is their roadtax though. However, with the Government cutting 50% on green diesel engines, a 2.5l will cost RM 1000 in road tax, while a 3.0l will cost RM 2000. compare to your car, fuel saving could more than cover your increase in road tax. of course, servicing each time is more costly, about RM 200-250, but some makes requires you to service every 10000km. Isuzu D-max apparently uses a timing gear, as oppose to timing belt/chain, thus does not require to change every 80000km as most other vehicles.

The fuel consumption is something really funny. I would have expected a 4wd pickup consumption to be more or at least equal a SUV, but surprisingly, better than your average proton. isuzu d-max clocked 1400km on 76 litres of diesel. this is certified by a MAA staff. comes up to about RM0.085/km. considering it a long distance driving, give it RM0.10/km also better than your Wira of RM0.15/0.16 per km, or Waja of RM0/17/0.18 per km.

Yee Keong, I must agree with what you have written.
My choice is Nissan Frontier.
I know it does not look as nice as the rest & it is has manual gears.
But it is very reliable and it has bigger & more comfortable passenger seats.
Look out for a potential new Frontier, it has more power.

One positive aspect Frontier, it is not the target of car thief.

As for Isuzu, I have no knowledge of that car.

Drive a Ranger from time to time, powerful truck but I would want to go long distance with it. Suspension too stiff for a comfortable ride.

The pick-ups were used by yuppies after the launch of Mitsubishi Storm. It got better, in terms of looks and comfort, when the Hilux came about. Pick-ups does have better fuel consumption as compare to SUV and the maintenance is much less than any other type of vechicle (if you are using the diesel engine).
As for cost of servicing, you gotta compare it with another vechicle of the same cc, then you can see the cost savings. Parts prices and availability will largely depend on the make of the pick-ups. E.g Isuzu parts tends to be more expensive then Mitsubishi.
Diesel engine these days are almost as quiet as petrol engine and more durable too. Does not need to warm up before starting and are very powerful. With its green engine, it actually does not emit dark smoke but because of the quality of diesel in Malaysia, you actually cannot help it.The Frontier can easily hits 180km/h on the highway. In that speed, stability is good considering the height of the vechicle.
Those that have not driven a pick-up before might find the suspension a bit hard, due mostly to the lip spring as opposed to normal springs and absorbers at the rear. But after having one, I can almost bet you'll never want to drive a normal car again. Thanks to its height, size and the ease of going through floods and pot holes.:D + also parking on the curb whenever there are no parking spaces available.
One caution after buying one, fix some good tracking system alarm. Pick-ups like Mitsubishi and Toyota Hilux are top on the stolen vechicle list.

Justin, you drive a pickup? i would like to know more about the maintenance. which one are you driving now? i would say that the pickup craze started with the ranger, and the storm came in and blow it up. however, the latest is definitely from the toyota hilux. blowing up a pretty storm really. 4-5 months waiting period, and i heard they are making 800-1000 monthly. and mitsu triton are expecting only about 150 monthly.

Used to own a Hilux. Drove for 2 months, had my side window smashed and my working bag stolen. A further 2 months later, had the whole vechicle stolen from inside my apartment.

Maintenance wasn't so much as it was still under warranty. Just the usual oil and filter change with no labour charge. Durable engine. I even took it for a semi-hard-core off road but couldn't reach our camp site as it's not equipped with wrinch, off road tyres and suspensions. That pick-up can even do drift on the tarmac. Really comfortable and spacious inside with the rear seats having a lean angle for rear passengers' comfort during long journey. Hilux is currently the only pick-up model with this features. Others, even the Triton have an almost vertical rear back seat. Hilux clutch is light (even ladies find it an ease to drive) and the traction is good.

There's no waiting list for the Hilux now just demand from car jackers! If you're into SUV, there'll be a new 3000cc model launching soon. I had a sneak preview, just like the Triton 3 months before it was launch, but they are not telling us the make. From the pictures provided for us, it's either a Nissan, Toyota or Isuzu.

i heard that Ford is coming out with a new Ranger. but if it's 3.0l, could be the toyota hilux 3.0 which has been around in thailand for quite sometime.

still into the Triton though. most likely to buy it, unless something else change my mind. going for a test drive next week!

Toyota Fortuner. Lots of problems with brakes and stability. Not worth buying. Triton is nice generally except for its rear end, doesn't look tough nor does it match the front.

I also find that the ranger kinda feels unstable during cornering especially when you're going fast. Skidded once in it and now don't dare go fast liau, but on the height of the car, dem chun man!

i guess you better wait for the new frontier then. called navarra in US. supposedly to be 174bhp, as compared to the Triton 136bhp, which is best currently. mazda will be coming up with one also.

the 3.0l hilux is supposedly to be coming with intercooler, which is expected to increase the horsepower by quite a bit, as the current hilux is underpowered, considering it's cabin size. not many mind though, as can pass off nicely as a fortuner if the canopy is done nicely.

to me, it serves like a car or rather 4wd type of vehicle. (it is 4wd, hehe), but with an extra cargo bed at the back. well, the cargo bed at the bed is the thing that helped reduce the tax for importing the truck in, as compared to pajeros or cars, as it's considered commercial vehicle. looking good so far. rained today, so got to test the car, or rather truck in the rain.

Yes oddpapa's right. Get the full potential out of that car. If not, it's like owning a Ferrari but always drives at 80km/h. It's a real adrenalin rush getting a feel of the 4x4 at work. Put in normal drive first before engaging 4x4on the same surface / condition, then you'll feel the defference.

You won't feel much of a difference testing going uphill especially on laterite road because the pick up itself is powerful enough going up with 2 wheels. Try on muddy or sandy surface then you'll FEELLLLLLLLLLLLL :D

Digging up an old thread, I'm also thinking of getting a truck now. Probably need the space for carrying my barang.
Thinking of getting a Ranger or maybe a Isuzu D-Max 2.5L and put a canopy over the back. Any one here got experience you'll like to share? I don't need it for heavy use coz my barang just bulky and not really heavy. I'm thinking more of the D-Max due to the lower fuel consumption.

I don't know what you call these in Malaysia, but based on your specifcations, I suggest that u get a twin cab with a turtle top for keeping your barang barang. Diesel driven has more power but you need to get larger CC.

Fishingman, if you jsut need a truck for carrying stuffs, and yet you want car comfort, try test drive the Actyon 2.0. engine is 2litres, save in road tax by almost half, RM900 vs RM500, and the suspension is coil spring, unlike leaf spring as installed in most trucks. problem is, the front mouth looks like a whale opening mouth. also, i dont think it can carry goods up to 1ton. mine is a truck, that is more sporty type, since it;s Mitsu. if you want truck look, then go for Hilux or Dmax. Dmax is most cost fuel efficient, and Hilux is best resale value. for pwer, ranger or b50. really depends on what you use it for, but if you carry light stuffs, and car like comfort, actyon win hands down. still, the whale opening mouth....

Thanks Yee Keong,
I don't think I wanna drive the whale shark around, mouth too big liau like wanna telan someone only. Hahaha and also for the same price I would have probably got a Triton or a Hilux anyway. Btw, did you put a canopy for your back? Saw a model of canopy for Triton that looks downright cun man!

Most probably looking at the 2.5L DMax due to the FC and also space to carry barang. My barang just bulky and not heavy so I guess no need extra extra power one lah. Probably just around 100 kilo of barang at a time only, probably less. But the road tax part is the part that makes me think twice-lah, 900 or somewhere there if not mistaken for DMax 2.5L. Don't really dare to consider buying Hilux or Triton due to their popularity with the thiefs and carjackers as well. Somemore I will part it at roadside coz I stay in shophouse so don't wanna wake up in the morning to find the car gone.

Somemore I will part it at roadside coz I stay in shophouse so don't wanna wake up in the morning to find the car gone.

haha, didnt know they are stealing a lot of Tritons now. i know Hilux is really hotcakes due to the re-sale value, which is one of the reasons why i din buy a hilux.

i have yet to put a canopy, but i think i will skip it and install a sports lid on it. looks more modern and not so uncle :P

hey, if i end up taking the canopy, dont say i uncle pls!! but do check out some sports lids. you may find that it's more useful, since it does conceal what you put inside, unlike canopies. to me, it's like a big boot. now, there's no boot and if go travelling with 4 ppl, have to put some luggage at the back. rain got problem :(
