I don't think Chelsea will win it so easily this season, even though they have strengthened their team by bringing in Shevchenko and Ballack. I just believe too many stars in a team does not guarantee success. These stars will have difficulty to play together. A very good example is Lampard and Ballack. On the paper, they look frightening but on the field, they are not that mighty.

As which team will challenge them, should be Pool, MU and Arsenal again. Spurs will only come 5th, the most.

Hey, this is the first time is many years that Liverpool is rated higher than MU.

Song, what's your prediction of the top 4?

Well, they've got Tomas Rosicky, a player I reckon to do well in Premiership. Arsene Wenger is damn good in buying players, for example, he bought Anelka at 700K and sold him off at 17mil!!!

Whatever it is, these 4 teams should top the table again.

Kuyt may even start in this opening game against Sheffield United. Frankly, I think Liverpool will have something extra this season compare to the previous seasons. They have speed in Mark Gonzalez and Craig Bellamy.

Although, I am a Pool fan, after watching the Sheffield game, they still have work to do. To win the title, you must score big and win games against teams like Sheffield. The midfield was a bit dissapointing as they not only were not able to control well but also failed to get the ball to the forwards. Only consolation is that its the first game.

With Risse and carra out for two weeks its gonna be tought.

Manure (:p ) played well and looked very strong and really got the perfect start to the new season.

Was I the only one impressed with Theo Walcott. He did not score, but certainly had the speed and moves to trouble Villa.

Finally, some justice done at EPL. I was gutted to think of the suspension of both Scholes & Rooney when this idiot was NOT even sent off.

Thatcher banned by City and charged by FA

Ben Thatcher has been suspended by Manchester City and charged with serious foul play by the Football Association as the full horror of his challenge on Pedro Mendes begins to sink in.

The former Welsh international met manager Stuart Pearce at City's Carrington training ground this morning and was told he would not feature against Arsenal tomorrow as a direct result of his elbows-first tackle on Mendes which saw the Portsmouth player spend Wednesday night in hospital.

Thatcher is said to be in full agreement of the internal punishment, which is also likely to extend to two weeks wages and has been ratified by City chairman John Wardle, who also met with Pearce this morning.

'Manchester City can confirm that Ben Thatcher has been suspended from first-team action pending the results of the club's internal investigation into the incident involving Pedro Mendes during the game with Portsmouth on Wednesday,' said a City statement.

'The player will miss tomorrow's home fixture with Arsenal. Ben Thatcher fully agrees with this decision.'

Blues officials have been embarrassed at the negative publicity Thatcher's disgraceful lunge has brought to the club.

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has called for the 30-year-old to be kicked out of the game completely should he ever do anything like that again.

And, though referee Dermot Gallagher inexplicably failed to send Thatcher off, the FA have now stepped in with a charge of serious foul play.

The 30-year-old has been given until September 12 to respond. However, with Pearce describing the incident as `indefensible' it is difficult to see what plausible plea Thatcher could make.

And, having stated their belief a red card would have warranted `an additional sanction', the FA have raised the obvious possibility of Thatcher receiving a ban equal to the six matches meted out to Lee Bowyer for his infamous scrap with Newcastle team-mate Kieron Dyer last season.

'The incident is being considered as an exceptional case because The FA contends that the challenge was sufficiently serious that had Thatcher been sent off, an additional sanction would have been merited,' said a statement released by the FA.

Pearce, whose own game was based on aggression, could come up with no justification for the tackle.

'People will say I played to the limit of the rules,' said Pearce.

'Ben's game is also based on aggression. But every now and then a red mist appears and he steps over the mark, which is totally unacceptable.

'The more I have seen the challenge on Wednesday, the worse it gets.

'It was an awful challenge, completely indefensible.'

Pearce has pleaded with Greater Manchester Police not to mount their own investigation, which they have threatened to do after receiving a number of complaints from outraged City supporters.

'Anything that happens on a football pitch should be governed by the FA and FIFA,' he said.

'Once you starting involving the police, the floodgates can open and you could end up with a situation where players are arrested during a game.'

Pearce followed up Thatcher's letter of apology to Mendes by ringing Redknapp personally to express his regret at the incident, which Blues skipper Richard Dunne claims has visibly crushed his team-mate.

'Normally, Ben is such a bubbly character, but he has lost all that,' said Dunne.

'He doesn't want to speak to anyone. He is really down in the dumps -- and rightly so.

't is something we could have done without so early in the season because it has just brought a lot of bad publicity to the club and has distracted from our preparations for the Arsenal game.

'But, unfortunately, these things happen. They have happened in the past and they will no doubt happen somewhere else in the future.

'There is an awful lot at stake once you cross that white line. It changes some people completely and sometimes, things do get out of control.'

Chelsea Face Three-Point Loss

Chelsea's title defence has been undermined by a new tapping-up scandal which could see them docked three points. Last night’s BBC bungs-probe Panorama programme showed Chelsea academy director Frank Arnesen apparently offering the agent of Middlesbrough youngster Nathan Porrit a deal to move to Chelsea.

fishboy
09-22-2006, 04:25 PM
Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso intends to try to score more goals from inside his own half after a stunning effort against Newcastle on Wednesday night.

The Spain international put the seal on a 2-0 win which sent Liverpool back into the top half of the Premiership when he struck from 65 yards with 12 minutes remaining at Anfield.

It was the second time Alonso had pulled off that trick for Liverpool, having done so in an FA Cup third-round tie against Luton in January.

'I think this was better,' said the 24-year-old, who had not scored since his Kenilworth Road strike.

jerry, you are right. the miss was very crucial. Although Pool won 3-0, I still feel that the team can improve. The 3 goals were scored in the last 30 mins. For 60 mins, we just found it tough to break in and create good chances.

Still, good victory, esp with Reading (who :D ) draw with some other team in Red and Everton's draw with the barcodes....

Hope this starts a good streak for the Reds..

What about Pool hitting the crossbar against Chelsea last week? Pool could've won the game, right? Unfortunately, Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool, the FT score.

Whatever blah blah blah, we can talk till tomorrow. The result stands, Liverpool 3-0 Spurs.

Cech undergoes surgery on skull
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has undergone surgery for a depressed fracture of the skull after being knocked unconscious in the win at Reading.

Chelsea are now facing a goalkeeping crisis for Wednesday's meeting with Barcelona.

Cech, the 24-year-old Czech Republic international, was knocked unconscious in the opening minute of Saturday evening's 1-0 Premiership win over Reading at the Madejski Stadium in a clash that left boss Jose Mourinho fearing for his player's life.

Chelsea have confirmed that Cech underwent surgery after being transferred to the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford to their specialist neuro-surgical unit. It is unknown when he will return to action but he is expected to miss the Barca game.

Reserve goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini could also miss the Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge after he was also knocked unconscious against Reading, although he was discharged from hospital on the same evening as the match.

A statement from Chelsea confirmed: "The operation was successful but it is too early to give an accurate assessment of his condition.

"Naturally everybody at Chelsea wishes Petr, and Carlo Cudicini - who was discharged last night after being knocked unconscious - a speedy recovery from their injuries."

It means Chelsea are set to start third-choice goalkeeper Hilario. The 30-year-old joined the Premiership champions on a free transfer from Portuguese top-flight club CD Nacional and has yet to make his debut.

Mourinho was furious with Stephen Hunt following Saturday's win, claiming the Royals player was laughing after inflicting the injury.

Chelsea chasing Buffon - Agent
Jose Mourinho is set to make a bid for Juventus stopper Gianluigi Buffon to solve his goalkeeper crisis, according the player's representative.

With first-choice keeper Petr Cech facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after fracturing his skull against Reading on Saturday, Mourinho is said to be keen to draft in a world-class replacement as soon as possible.

And Buffon's representative Paolo Fabbri told The Sun that the Premiership champions are interested in the 28-year-old.

"We are aware (Chelsea owner) Roman Abramovich can offer fortunes," he said. "What he needs is to convince the player it's the right move for him. This is not a financial issue, it's about a chance in life.

"I don't think he wants to leave Italy but things can change quickly in football."

Buffon has four years remaining on his current contract with the Turin-based club, who were relegated to Serie B at the end of last season following a match-fixing scandal.

Can you believe this? Can they always get what they want??

Reds cut to pieces by super Gunners
Mathieu Flamini, Kolo Toure and William Gallas left Liverpool's title hopes in tatters after earning Arsenal a 3-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.

Flamini struck late in the first half to put the Gunners in front and Liverpool never looked like ending their five-match goalless drought away from Anfield, before Toure and Gallas added gloss to the result in the second half.

Both teams went in search of the victory, knowing defeat would almost certainly rule them out of the Premiership title race.

However, Arsenal have now closed the gap on Manchester United to ten points and have a game in hand, while Rafa Benitez's men remain some 14 points off the pace. :p

THE REDS TAKEOVER DEAL
Dubai International Capital are expected to make a formal £450million offer early in January 2007 after Liverpool gave them permission to inspect their accounts.

The potential new owners are said to be happy with the management of Rafael Benitez, and he is expected to be given more money to spend than any other manager in the club's history.

The £450million investment is likely to include £200million to spend on a new stadium at Stanley Park and £80million to pay off the club's debts, while the remainder would pay for 85% of the shares, with current chairman David Moores keeping an interest.

It is not yet clear whether Moores will remain as chairman of the club.

Boss Benitez has welcomed news of the takeover, saying: "I have talked to the chairman and chief executive about this and I was pleased with what I heard.

"It is always good for a club to have more money and more possibilities

Pardew realistic over Addicks task
New Charlton boss Alan Pardew believes his side need to win at least half of their remaining Premiership games to avoid the drop.

The 45-year-old was paraded at a press conference at the Valley on Boxing Day, barely two weeks after being sacked as West Ham boss.

The Addicks were second bottom of the table at the start of play on Tuesday, seven points adrift of safety.

As for taking another job so quickly after leaving Upton Park, Pardew said: "I booked a holiday with the family and was expecting to go on that on the fifth of January. Situations change quickly in football and this opportunity came my way and it just fit well for me.

"It was an easy decision because it was my old club.

"Sometimes in life it's nice to go where you feel you've got a good shot at it and I feel I've got that here."

So funny, it takes one ex-charlton manager Curbishley to replace Pardew at West Ham and then Pardew join Charlton as manager two weeks later... replacing Curbishley's successor.

What's next in football? Mourinho takes over Liverfools as manager??:p

Chelsea 2-2 Reading: Calamity Cole's Royal mess

A bizarre own goal from Michael Essien prevented Chelsea from going top of the Barclays Premiership as brave Reading left Stamford Bridge with an unlikely share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

Drogba leaps to head home Chelsea's first against Reading. The Blues looked on course for victory with Didier Drogba's double sandwiching Leroy Lita's equaliser but a blunder from Ashley Cole in the 85th minute handed Reading a point.

Kevin Doyle crossed but Cole, who had come on as a second-half substitute and was under no pressure, rushed his clearance, hitting it at Essien who unwittingly deflected the ball into the net.

It was a remarkable ending to a match that Chelsea seemed destined to win give the emphatic response to Lita's header, with Shaun Wright-Phillips setting up Drogba's 19th goal of the season.

Blues manager Jose Mourinho had opted for a 4-4-3 formation with Salomon Kalou, Andriy Shevchenko and Drogba forming a three-pronged attack that enjoyed enough chances to put Chelsea out of sight by half-time.

Reading sensed a chink in Chelsea's armour and their second equaliser came in bizarre circumstances in the 85th minute.

Doyle crossed into the area and Cole, under no pressure, hit the ball straight at Essien and it deflected off the Ghana midfielder and into the net.

Chelski's luck ran out tonite? All I can say is about time after two lucky wins in the last 2 EPL games. All EPL team will have a go at Chelsea from now on...:p They are no longer invisible...

The 26-year-old skipper, who was awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours List, got his hands on the famous trophy last May after a remarkable penalty shoot-out victory over West Ham.

His side begin their defence with one of the toughest possible tests this weekend when Arsenal visit Anfield in the third round.

Pool is back in the game, Kuyt header in 72 mins. Pool 1 Arsenal 2. Pool is dominating the game as Arsenal sat back to defend. But for how long?

OK, game over for Pool.. Thierry Henry the KING scored at 84 mins with a solo goal. Carragher's mistake and Dudek looks so fat and clumpsy.. Pool 1 Arsenal 3. Arsenal fans singing Que Sera Sera now..... for who? Pool fans singing their club anthem - you always walk alone.

Yeah, Dudek was hopeless. He really look out of sort last night. Could have save the second goal. Reina could have hold the post better. Wonder why managers likes to make changes like that eventhough meeting a strong opponent. I just don't understand.

Suprising Rosicky scored last night cos normally he will always miss such opportunities. Sad that Pool had to meet Arsenal so early in 3rd round. This years draw sucks. Most Premiership teams are meeting each other early in the Cup games.

Loosing 6-3 at home is bad. no two ways about it. But I agree that rafa should not be blamed solely for it.. its also not fair to compare rafa, wenger and SAF. wenger has been in charge for 10 years. SAF even more. They have had the time to stamp their mark on the team. rafa has been with pool for only 3. Read somewhere that even the great sir alex had it very tough in hist first few years in charge... in his first 4 years in charge of man utd they were in relegation zone twice! he almost got sacked after 4 years. see where he has taken the team to now. unless one has the funds to "buy" a whole new team (read: chelski), creating a winning team takes years. you have to start from the bottom, youth, reserves etc.

rafa has got the right attitude and he is one of the best managers around. sometimes i feel that he won the CL to soon. too much expectations placed on him. but hey a 5th CL is still better than no trophies.:D

Football is all about winning and loosing. Pool have to put the losses behind and concentrate on watford this weekend and barca in the CL. ynwa.

I think Rafa don't like Crouchie, why didn't he be allowed to stay on in the game to complete his hattrick.

Never scored a hattrick in his club career. However, he scored hattrick for England before.

I tend to agree. We had the game in full control. Let the tall man stay on for his first ever hattrick.
