it's almost like we've observed a moment of silence (in this case a few days of silence!) in remembrance of our friend, pau yee lee...

so now, we should be over the shock of hearing the news and have had time to process our feelings about it... the sense of vulnerability, realising how short and fragile life is... so, let's move on and not leave things at a standstill. let's go on to live our lives with a greater sense of it's value, and let's stay connected to one another because every friendship is precious and we ought to make the best of them while we still can. =)

i suppose this chit-chat thread is partly to keep in touch with one another and share current events in our lives, right? whereas the other threads are meant to be topical discussions and exchange of opinions? well, if i'm right about that, how are you all doing?

just fyi, i'll be flying off to kuching tomorrow morning for Scripture Union East Asia Regional Conference... i'll be there for about a week. am hoping to have a good time of resting, relaxing, and learning together there. should be interesting to meet and dialogue with our colleagues and counterparts from other countries in the region. =)

Hehe... basically i dun hafta show my face in office for one whole week cuz Mon & Tue boss tell me to attend Executive Development Training program (with free meals 3 times a day!) which only 3 ppl including me was chosen from my dept (Finance). Apparently it is a company-wide thingy, with a mixture of ppl from different dept to do dunno wat. Hmm...

Then I took leave on Wed & Fri so i can go back Sitiawan on Wed morning n return to KL on Sunday! MERDEKA!!! :)

just flew back from sarawak yesterday! =) conference was great, now i hope i can find some time to process the new experiences and information gained there. =)

to answer guenboh's question, it was a work related thingy. Scripture Union (SU), the organization i am currently working for, has a history of 140 years and is active in about 150 countries. so this conference saw conferees from those countries in the region of east asia gather together to share their stories and brainstorm concerning possible future strategies and directions for the various movements. there were ppl from m'sia, indonesia, philippines, singapore, cambodia, laos, vietnam, hongkong, japan, korea and etc. though the language barrier was often a problem, it was great to interact with new friends from so many different nationalities and cultures! =)

The telephone line for the whole block is yet to be restored and now the lift is out of order! Climbing 5 storeys is still ok but to let our customers to do that is not a good idea. Omigosh... I just took part in the KL Rat Race on Tue n now my legs are aching like mad! Been climbing up n down stairs like old lady clutching the hand rails and going... Ow!.. Ow!.. Ow!.. i can't even go to the toilet properly cuz it hurts so bad to sit or squat... :crying:

Unfortunately i dun have pix cuz didnt bring camera! wat a waste... it's my 1st time so i didnt expect it to be like a carnival atmosphere wat with cheerleaders in colourful costumes & pom poms, aerobic performances by Fitness First hunky guys... *droool*, drinks stations everywhere so got free 100plus/coca cola/lemonade/etc, friends & supporters with flags & stuff to show their support... it was all sooo lively!

Actually, i was one of 5 member team to represent our company. It was an interesting race cuz all we have to do is get ourselves from point A to B which is only 4.5km around kl city centre. We can run/walk/jog/crawl/swim (if kl flash flood again!) watever, only condition is everyone must run in their office attire!

Can u imagine dat?? a bunch of grown men & women running around kl golden triangle area in shirts + ties + long pants, some women even ran in their office skirts! haha... :laugh: The race was 5.10pm to 6.10pm so it was peak 'after office hours' (organisers purposely time it liddat wan!), so u can imagine the stares n honks we get from stuck drivers, plus stares n laughter from locals n tourists alike... :o

Well, i didn't win... how cud i? i nvr trained a single day of my life! hehe... but i managed to finish the race in 40 min, which is well within the stipulated time limit of 1 hour. so at least i can call myself a legit Rat Racer! :D

Wish i had announced it b4 the race so maybe u can come see me 'embarrass' myself for charity. The organisers managed to exceed their target RM1mil donation collected from participating companies. Since my company donated a min of RM10k to send a team, my boss pestered me to take part become 'reserve' so i tot 'why not?'... reserve only wat, dunnit scared... mana tau last min a team member fell sick n this 'overly optimistic reserve' got called up to run! hehe... sooooo last min i no time to panic, just change to my sneakers, cabut early fm work, go register at starting line n start running la... sheeeshhh!

I know people who work 12 hours a day, six days a week, or more. Some people do so because of a work emergency where the long hours are only temporary. Other people I know have put in these hours for years. I don't know if they are working all these hours, but I do know they are in the office this long. Others put in long office hours because they are addicted to the workplace.

Whatever the reason for putting in overtime, working long hours over the long term is harmful to the person and to the organization.

There are things managers can do to change this for everyone's benefit. Being in the office long hours, over long periods of time, makes way for potential errors. My colleagues who are in the office long hours frequently make mistakes caused by fatigue. Correcting these mistakes requires their time as well as the time and energy of others. I have seen people work Tuesday through Friday to correct mistakes made after 5 PM on Monday.

As Managers, there are things we can do to help people leave the office. First and foremost is to set the example and go home ourselves. Second is to encourage people to put some balance in their lives. For instance, here is a guideline I find
helpful:

1) Wake up, eat a good breakfast, and go to work.

3) Go home.

They are hard for some of us because that requires 'personal change'.
They are possible since we all have the power to choose to do them.

Perhaps some people put in such long hours because they don't want to miss anything when they leave the office. The trouble with this is that events will never stop happening. That is life !! Things happen
24 hours a day. Allowing for little rest is not ultimately practical.
So, take a nap.
Things will happen while you're asleep, but you will have the energy to catch up when you wake.

summore, wearing baju nyonya today 'coz no more baju in cupboard edi - no time to do ironing. so, kena another round of praise there with raised eyebrows including my director. now, you can't possibly imagine how bloated i am from all this!! =D

ok, i reply bottoms up. first time with chiffon - jadi. which was years ago. second time with chiffon - jadi. which was yesterday. it's all about the technique la for chiffon. it's one of the simplest cakes if you ask me. choc cake is another easy-peesy cake. dear, you talking to an amateur baker here la.... do come and visit.

once upon a time, me + sis + fren (gal) went to lumut esplanade have famous ice kacang along the pier. we were in a jolly mood as my fren & I was enjoying our semester break n she one gila fella can laugh till hse runtuh wan.

my sis being d alert one among us blur sotongs, noticed a group of guys sitting at d next table. one of d guys (let's call him ah beng) kept looking at me, pointing in my direction n spoke sumtin seriously to his frens who promptly laughed at him. (...???...) :blink:

yesterday for FOC my grpmates and I had a 10-course sit-down dinner in The Katerina Hotel, BP!!! :) actually for me, they had a 'special' nasi goreng la...and i tried abit of vege from wateva dish that had 'em.

actually, We were invited for a talk on hypertension by our hosp specialist...sponsored by Pfizer. the dinner was scrumtious...talk a tad boring.

now now...since everyone went there for the food mainly (and dinner lasted 2hrs) as opposed to the talk (1hr) =p we had fun with crappy talks etc...and some of my batchmates were snapping candid shots. this guy has got professional cameras, man! to the extent that i think my table was like the most 'happening' one...till the specialist arrived, then his table was riuh oso la...hehe, he's one jovial ole man - a FooChow! wonder if he's from sitiawan...maybe i shud ask sometime, huh? Dr Lee Man Pin.
oh yeah...to the extent that the Pfizer rep actually asked my frenz to help them snap photo wif dr lee...and it was done like a pro :D

Ok. Since I've been MIA for awhile, I'll do a short update here for your info purposes and kickstart the forum.

Been sorta busy lately on a pet project at work. But its all finished and is going live in first week of October (check newspapers and major shopping centers billboards).

My boss has also just found someone to double me at work. So with that wrapped up, an overseas posting in Shanghai next year is now available to me (or a sales manager job maybe if i stay). So I might be away for a year or so chasing skirts in Shanghai. Keep you all updated when confirmed.

My personal life is business as usual. The ladies either think I'm too young or I think they are too young (emotionally) :D I break quite a number of appointments as well so I guess I deserve it.

I'm thinking of picking up golf but my left-handedness is of course a problem. Going for one last liveaboard diving trip in October before season ends.

Mum, dad and bros are all doing well so I'm pretty lucky there.

I'm off next Thursday and Fri so anyone with plans please keep me in the loop. Time to party! I've got 2 ACS-ian girls with me but the more the merrier.

sorry to change maggi mee cooking topic. just wanted to share my amazement. one of my dear friends got me a backpack for my cambodia trip as a b'day gift just now. i'll be seeing it tomorrow. when he was shopping, he called me to tell me that there was this Victorinox backpack that he absolutely fell in love with and wanted to get for me but it was RM 2k+!!!! it's just crazy!! so, i told him not to pamper me that much and get me something cheaper. i don't know what he got me but wow, oh wow!! a beautiful backpack that cost a bomb!! i don't think i'll bring it to cambodia with me too anyway!! :) how much would you all spend on a backpack??

i am a big fan of lowe alpine, and i have several lowe alpine backpack - 15L, 30L, 45L and 60L...
but still, i didn't think i paid too much for them compared to the victorinox that you mentioned...
