The year is 2007 and 6 year old bluenose Duncan is talking to his
bluenose Dad.

SON "Dad, my mates in school told me that Liverpool won the European
Cup for the 5th time in 2005 - are they right dad?

DAD "Yes son, it's true, but they were dead lucky son, all the way
through the tournament"

SON "Why dad?"

DAD "Well in the group stages ..."

SON "What dad, did they have a team from Azerbaijan, Israel, and
Ireland in their group?"

DAD "Well no, they had Monaco, Deportivo la Coruna, and Olympiakos"

SON "Well they still sound like 3 easy teams to me dad"

DAD "Actually Monaco reached the final the year before, Olympiakos
had
won their league 7 times out of the previous 8 seasons, and Deportivo
finished above the galacticos of Real Madrid in their league".

SON "Jeez dad, that sounds like quite a difficult group then".

DAD "yeh I suppose your right son, but they were still lucky - it
took
a mishit shot by Gerrard against Olympiakos to get through".

SON "oh is that the goal were your hero Andy Gray goes berserk
shouting
"you beauty, you beauty, what a hit son, what a hit!!!!"

DAD "yes son it is"

SON "oh ok. Well what happened in the last 16 dad, who did they
draw?"

DAD "Bayer Leverkusen"

SON "Bayer who?"

DAD "Exactly son, but they had beaten Real Madrid 3-0 at home, and
won their group that included Dinamo Kiev and Roma too."

SON "Bloody hell dad, they sound good".

DAD "Yes, I suppose you're right son"

SON "So did they win on away goals or something"

DAD "errrrr, no, they won both legs 3-1 each"

SON "Oh - well, who next then dad"

DAD "Juventus"

SON "How the did they get past them Dad?"

DAD "Well they did - they won 2-1 at home, and cruised to a 0-0 away
draw without Juve having hardly any chances".

SON "Were Juve at that time - had all their decent players gone
or something?"

DAD "Well actually they still had players like Del Piero, Nedved,
Ibrahimovic, Thuram, and Buffon in the side. And they won Serie A a few weeks later."

SON "wow, they beat the Italian champions elect - which easy team
did they get in the semi then?"

DAD "Chelsea"

SON "Chelsea - for sake - what a easy draw - they've won
nothing, Everton have won more than them".

DAD "Well that season they won the Premiership and League Cup but the
Red didn't let them score in 186 minutes of football"

SON "Jesus Christ - so Liverpool beat the English Champions elect too"

DAD "Yes son, they bloody well did".

SON "So after all that I suppose all the good teams had been knockedout"

DAD "Not quite son, AC Milan awaited them in the final"

SON "No way - aren't they the 2nd most successful team in the competition's history".

DAD "Yes son they are"

SON "So were Liverpool lucky because Milan had all their good players
out with injuries"

DAD "No - they had Shevchenko, Crespo, Maldini, Nesta, Cafu, Kaka,
Stam, Dida, Gattuso, Pirlo, and Seedorf".

SON "Your 'avin a laff"

DAD "It gets worse son, Milan were cruising, 3-0 up at half-time".

SON "What happened, did they have 3 men sent off in the second half -
how did Liverpool get back into the game?"

DAD "No, Milan had no men sent off, the Red sh*te scored 3 goals in 6
minutes"

SON "Against the best defence in Europe"

DAD "Yes!!!, against the best defence in Europe"

SON "So what happened next - extra time?"

DAD "Yes son, and Dudek made the luckiest save ever to stop a
Shevchenko shot from a yard"

SON "Why was it lucky dad - did it hit him on the , nose, shoulder
or something"

DAD "No son, his hand"

SON "Well aren't goalies meant to save shots with their hands"

DAD "Yeah, but that's besides the point"

SON "Then what"

DAD "Penalties!"

SON "English teams are at penalties"

DAD "Not this time they weren't - they only missed one. And
that's how Liverpool became the luckiest team to win the European Cup".

SON "But I bet when they brought the cup home there was hardly anyone
to watch as all Liverpool fans live anywhere but Liverpool you say.
How many was there, 5,000 or so?"

DAD "1 million people lined the streets".

SON "So let's get this straight dad - Liverpool had 3 good teams in
their group, they then knocked out a team who had beaten Real Madrid
3-0, they then knocked out the future Serie A champions, then knocked
out the future Premiership champions, before coming back from 3-0
down to beat the 2nd most successful club in Europe. And then the whole
population of Liverpool came out to welcome them home!!!!

DAD "That about sums it up son"

SON "Dad?"

DAD "Yes son"

SON "Can I have a Liverpool shirt for my birthday next week, and can
you stop calling me Duncan - I'm Stevie from now on"

Nice tale of Pools there, KC.... :p

Amuse me to no end when Pools tried to make the heros out of their boring + lucky games... which of course, they ONLY just had to win these games via penalty...[ok...I get it...that's about the only other way these Pools people won their trophies... wahahahaha..... ]

Let me help jolt some recent memories:

How about the time when the Spanish referee blew for free kicks against Pools in the UEFA Cup and then suddenly opted to change his mind [NB: he must have been given the Freedom Key to the Pool city by the Pool Mayor by now... ]

Stephane Henchoz had had more blatant hand balls than any players in the Premier League that season including in the League Cup Final against ManUtd BUT the amazing thing is he did NOT receive even a single yellow for that...[talk about Arsene needing glasses...]...let alone a send off..

I remembered pool was called LuckyPool that season; surely that was not for nothing.....

James, how about MU beating Bayern Munich 2-1 in the dying minutes in 1999? Schmeichel saving a last minute Bergkamp's penalty in the FA Cup?

The fact remains, MU won treble that year. Luck or not, it does not matter.

Brother James, Liverpool won not because of luck.
They have good players on their side.

No doubt about the good players part, Bro.... and luck definitely played a role.

In fact, Pools won more trophies than Man Utd..but..what differentiates Man Utd from Liverpool is in its entertainment value..

Where Man Utd won them with style and drama... Liverpool won them in a most bunglin' manner.. sometimes bored us to death..that is, until fairly recently. Under RBenitez, the entertainment value has improved quite dramatically but a long way to go yet to match Manchester United.

Still names of superstars like Charlton, Law and "bad boy" Best of 60's till the talismanic Eric Cantona of the 90's and poster pin-up boy Beckham... still reign supreme in the Football Hall of Fame..

Can Liverpool claim to have superstars of the same aura despite having Dalglish, Souness, et. al.??? You would be hard pressed to win this case...

Brother, if you are one of the richest FC in Europe, I am sure you can have all the style. I rest my case. With Money, one can speak louder

Bro, I beg to differ.....

Man Utd was bankrupt at least 3 times..in its early existence (history)

Man Utd football stadium was bombed out of existence during WWII..

Man Utd best crop of young players called the Busby Babes was killed and wiped out in their youth in the 1950s just after being the 1st English team to have qualified for the European Cup Semis..................... (no other English teams dared that up to that time.....)

In comparison, Pools never suffers this kind of misfortune and have won more trophies.. Surely Pools would have been richer... (in another life...)???

BUT why is Man Utd still the richest in the world???

It's the reward of being the Pioneer climbing the "Everest of Football"... Man Utd has the heroism, aura, style, drama and tragedy that many people have come to identify with, with their own lives...

No one is perfect and everyone knows that; but Man Utd embodies this human drama that is about to unfolds before its supporters eyes every day and every season..........non stop!........

That's why so many people crazed over this football team (which leads to crazy amount of jealousy) - be it the superstar genius who screw up his life like Georgie Best, pin up poster boy got kick out of the club like David Beckham....a superstar who retired at his prime like Cantona....etc..

Teams like Pools do not have this type of exciting dramas... e.g. Arsenal don't get the "boring-boring Arsenal" tag for nothing....................

That's why, mate..

I agree 200%. In England, parents spend lots of money training the kids to play football, hoping their investments will pay back one day. What about the poor kids who have natural talent but parents not rich enough to train them profesionally...do they get a chance to play the national league?
Brazil different, Ronaldinho learnt his football from the street...with his natural talent and own style. This one i respek!

As a Liverpool fan, I am not worried at all. All you need to do is trust Rafael to do the job.

Look at Arsenal (and Arsene Wenger) and their achievement. Though they did not win anything, I rate them as well achieved last season. They sold Viera and brought in some youngsters and they played together so well. They were in the CL final and could have won it. All you need to do is trust Arsene Wenger and his visions. The same goes to Pool and Rafael.

Even if Rafael buys Akmal Rizal, I believe Akmal will do a good job in Pool (so long as he does not get Heskey back).

Cisse out of World Cup after breaking leg

Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse has been ruled out of the World Cup after fracturing his right tibia in tonight's friendly against China in St Etienne. Cisse collapsed in agony after colliding with China captain Zhi Zheng in the 11th minute of a match France eventually won 3-1. He lay prone for several minutes before being carried off on a stretcher with his leg attached to a splint. Cisse went straight to the hospital where he is currently being operated on. He has an open fracture of the tibia.

Not Zhang Zhiyi ah?

Anyway, hope he recovers fast. Lyon's manager, Gerald Houllier wants to bring him to Lyon. Let's see the amount he has to offer. Cisse does contribute to Liverpool in certain ways but if the price is right, then sell him off.

Cisse missed the majority of the 2004-05 season with a similar injury to his left leg, sustained in game against Blackburn at Ewood Park in October 2004.

Now both of his chicken legs has broken. I guess no one will want to buy him anymore right now. Poor Pool will have to feed him until he is back on his feet again. :(

What a joke
By MARK IRWIN

JAMIE CARRAGHER was last night reeling after being branded a ‘joke’ by England’s fitness coach.

Ivan Carminati made the astonishing attack on Liverpool star Carra for not knowing the rules of a penalty shootout.

But the Italian waited until the squad had returned home before pouring scorn on England’s stars.

Carragher had courageously stepped forward to take England’s decisive fourth penalty in their World Cup quarter-final shootout with Portugal.

Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard had already missed when Carragher turned and slammed his spot-kick past keeper Ricardo.

But Argentine ref Horacio Elizondo had not blown his whistle and ordered a retake.

This time Carragher changed his mind, hesitated in his run-up and fired a low shot which Ricardo turned against the crossbar.

Carminati sneered: “What a joke. Jamie Carragher is a professional football player. And as a football player you know you have to wait for the referee.

“It is the same rule in England, in Italy or anywhere else in Europe. It’s the same in America or Africa — in fact everywhere.”
