Title is self-explanatory... :)

So guys & gals... students ke, worker bees ke, own boss ke, kaki lepak ke, blur sotongs ke, watever ur status ur input is most welcome!

Here's a guide for a start :

Are u enjoying the life of a carefree student or are u proud to be earning ur own living?

Do you dread exams/deadlines and if given a choice, which of the lesser evil wud u choose?

Wat do u think of the high unemployment in this country where alot of grads cant or wont find jobs?

Shoot!

I miss the carefree life of study life. But I din like the fact that I was using parent's money. Kenot simply buy stuff.

Working life.. earning own money... buy whatever I wan. hehehe... but... life bounded to work. No longer carefree. Got bills to worry about. :(

Fresh grads... I dun think will face any problems in finding jobs. Prolly they are looking at managerial high paying positions which require experience which they do not have....

Student time was great. Life was fun. With or without exam.
Work part time just to earn the extra few hundreds a month.
But not enough money to do & buy what I like.

Working life is ok (a part from the stress)
Can equally enjoy life (when we earn enough to have a little fun)

As for young grads, they need to realise that it will be difficult to pick the job that they want. If am am jobless. I don't mind working as long I have money. For a start, fast food outlet is always the easiest place to get a job

I like the carefree students life with so much free hours, but dread the exams. I like working life because able to own money and dun have to feel guilty using parents or husband's money, but dread the long and unflexible hours. Working life is so boring ...you have to work until you retire (or strike lottery, whichever comes first:D ), not much changes to look forward to.
Whereas student life just a transition, preparing for working life...you cannot stay a student forever...full of unknown futures.
If need to choose, i'll choose working life.

i agree! carefree vs money... hmm... hard to choose lah cuz i wan my cake & eat it too :)

but both study & working life have sumthin no1 can escape - Responsibility, whether to pass exams or to meet work obligations, no shortcut there, rite?

oh yeah... i was studying n doing partime events mgt, it was so much fun until d exam looms near. but d extra $, while it lasted, was very useful to go movies & shopping with frens.

hmm... so working life is the transition to retirement life, by then retirement life is transition for eternal life :p

i would choose working life too. Way too busy & way high stress but also gives me d financial independence dat a modern gal needs! keke... :D

Good thread, ah boh!
hmmmm - my turn now...*bang bang bang* (shooting mahhh)

i like training life. getting paid to study and pass exams.
wish my training life had that kind of $$$ aspect too! unfortunately my dad has to come out with the moolah :( We pay, and we get trained, and sit for exams monthly...hhhmm, so in conclusion --> we pay & subject ourselves to torture. sadistic, yeah?

:p well...when its all for passion :D whats gotta be done, has to be done!

Are u enjoying the life of a carefree student or are u proud to be earning ur own living?
i would love to be earning! feel bad parents (dad lar, since he's sole breadwinner) has to pay so much for me! you know...i'm his biggest investment (dem...even our car+house costs lesser than my cost!) & to think i'm forever having to incur cost for him for time being *sad thought*. there are lotsa things i'd love to have...but have to put on halt coz i'll get them with my own money, in a yr's time....yeaaay!

partime job is out of Q coz siang malam weekend oso have to come hosp...wer got time to commit? unless i can get sumthing flexible...where i can earn money (how i wish...sigh)

but, as to the Q in bold, i am a student. quite carefree, as i still make time to forum etc *now tatz somwthing considering most med students dun even chcek their emails, and here i am...would die if i dun enter forum for a couple of days! =p)
but thats that...hmm, i had a few mths of ideal student life when 1st came to seremban. but, it ended - that was anhther rude shock in my life.

but anyway...when i dun have the life i wish, i love the life i have. (and students life was supposed to be bestest time of a person's life. not for me though...OVERALL, its almost a nightmare that i wont wish unto my worst enemy even - not like i have any =p)

amendments made to my past idealistic thoughts...and i socialize & hang out in this forum! so...seriously, the hi-lite of my student life is this acs forum.

Do you dread exams/deadlines and if given a choice, which of the lesser evil wud u choose?
to an extent...yes. though u get used to the idea when its a monthly affair, but when everything comes together...stress wei! it boild down to, shud i study? should i go to ward? so...use the rule of priority - first things first.

drg schooldays, i hated to do last min work. always efficient...tatz all in the past now, coz with heavy-coursework...u have to do last min work, coz there's so much to be done in a day.

i dislike exams coz they promote competitiveness. have u seen the looks on ur 'frens' face when u do better than them? or the feeling of worthlessness when u fail a ppr? well...constantly reminding self that exams are just a measurement of aptitude, and in medic school, it involves luck too...coz the syllabus is infinity & u can nvr finish studying (be fully prepared). its a lot of broad concepts + common sense.

i would choose assignment deadlines anyday, over exams =)
reason being...working on assignments give me adrenaline rush (like last wknd i even forego my zzzzz - without any coffee! and nx day still unable to sleep, though work was done...that intoxicating *wink*) I love to type...and when i see a completed work in front of me, it gives me a sense of accomplshment...ahhhh.

Wat do u think of the high unemployment in this country where alot of grads cant or wont find jobs?
i agree with VC...it depends on ur line of study. some areas, erm...its well known that there's a lack of job opportunity. so...grab the job that comes ur way & use it as a stepping stone. jangan pandang maruah!

in my case...haha, that'd be the day i want to live to see - when Malaysia says "Unemployed Fresh Medical Graduate - what will they do now?". No worries about unemployment. only worry is if i choose to serve in east malaysia first two yrs, will they spare me future rural postings & let me stay 4 good to specialize back here? *shrugh*

wow lav, u sure have strong opinions on this matter.

u dun hafta wori bout getting a job tho, evrywhr i read our country says not enuf docs, not enuf medics, not enuf nurses... y lar like dat, kesian us sick ppl leh hafta hunt down good ppl who know how to use a syringe properly. cheh...

i have a strange feeling why so fussy about certain jobs... i mean, c'mon la if a person is sooo fresh fm college/uni/watever, cant expect super high salary + benefits with only a paper qualification to offer rite?

priority for 1st job shud be Experience, not money or even job satisfaction cuz evry1 gotta start sumwhr, even if its d bottom rung of d ladder. priority for subsequent jobs can be Money + Experience + Job Satisfaction, if u're lucky.

hehe...just my 2 pence (but panjang berjela-jela :P

hmm...u r rite, bobo. for time being shortage, coz after the complusary service...drs waiting to run-away from gomen service ma...or those who r trained overseas dun come back! so...amacam?? those who stay on...some who get into the 'chronic MO category' get so fed-up with their job...and dun do it for satisfaction anymore - but merely as WORK. and IMHO the day u see ur vocation as WORK...it will seem daunting. i have always...and still do believe that 'Medicine is a Calling' :D

oh btw...i heard from my cousin in ukraine that these grads ahh, classified as categoryC (i nvr knew b4 that that they had categorization of registered docs) - are NOT allowed to open up own GP clinics, unless they specialize lo. We local grads fall under CategoryA it seems...funny eh, sometimes when u r within the country, the policies are never revealed to u

ya lo, yalo....experience takda! tapi wan BIG BUCKS. my older cousins (mom's side) who have tasted working world tell us kiddos take ur first job as 'resume building' experience. gather as much as u can...give as much as u can. leave with good-reputation...and a wonderful future referee (the ex-boss) to a job that's more fitting to the nature of ur study, when the time comes

concerning the bolded part...yup, as they say HO (housemen) are the lowest creatures in the ward. so, u can imagine where v medic students stand :p ITS always BOTTOM up =D

well, i am both working and studying at the moment, and i have been so for the past 6 years...
i enjoy my student life aspect for the pursuit of knowledge, freedom to travel, interesting social circle...
yet at the same time, we all know how little/no income student can have...
i'm lucky that i have a very flexi part time job that pays very well to fund my travel etc...
and even luckier to found a good phd program that pays quite well too, tax free...
this way, i'm working through my loan repayment for my undergrad fees...
and i'm proud to say that in the last 2 years, i have repaid a little more than 10K euro of loan... :)

it may be hard work sometimes, and slogging through is not always easy...
but at least to have some of my responsibility looked after...
i don't feel guilty whenever i splurge/travel/spend... because that's reward to myself....
work hard, play hard baby... :D

LiLiaN, I know some of the PhD students here find it difficult as their salaries depend on grants, which when expire, they are in trouble. And there's limited post for them to move on when they complete their PhD. Do you have any of these difficulties?

LiLiaN
05-01-2006, 06:58 AM
my salary depends on grants too, and i guess i am one of the lucky ones...
while some phd students struggle and had to demonstrate to get extra income...
my PI last year gave me and cait (another phd student on the same grant) pay increase!!

this grant of ours will expire september next year....
and while i feel under some pressure to finish on time (and i feel responsible too)...
i have been assured that if i needed a little more time, it'll be alright...
my PI holds several grants and he can shift some money around...

i hope it doesn't have to come to that of course...
later this year i will be learning about writing for grant application...
so that i can go away to do some lab exchange in canada or kenya...
that should be a good experience and skill for me to learn...
and i am ever so grateful to have wonderful PI and also a very caring postdoc supervisor...

as for postdoc positions, i am really not worried about that...
there's a demand for my skill set in my field of work...
and because my combination is rather unusual, it helps...
saying that, i plan to take some time out after my phd...
to try to figure what i really want to do and where to go...

Very interesting. I suppose genetics is going to be the future. Even aortic aneuryms are being linked to genes now, but still very early and no definite association yet. Is there any specific disease that your research involve?

LiLiaN

no, i'm studying genome wide evolution, namely positive selection, at the moment...
this is rather exciting, and makes me feel great that i'm contributing back to science...

one general advice for students in the forum...
it is vital to have interest in what you're studying...
don't just do it for someone else's sake...
you don't want to feel dragged by your choice of subject....

working does bring in more income, but does it give personal fulfilment..?
this, is where i believe, a vested interest comes in and plays a major role... ;)

cant agree more with u..sound advice there, Lil. Thanx for reminding us.
In fact, interest is what is sustaining me...as its enabling me to see Life as a bed of roses...with some thorns! ultimately...we focus on the roses, which keeps us going...and the thorn-pricks will seem immaterial. =)

Coming back to the topic - I didn't really like my study life except for the sleeps, ponteng classes, some enthusiastic lecturers, my housemates in Uni, my friends including my super nice girlfriends, my juniors, co-curricular activies I was involved in etc ..

Everything, besides the stressful exams and assignment datelines, was great!
I wouldn't mind if the assignments are interesting and can help me acquire new skills....

At the moment, I am doing something I have passion for. I work from home, don't drive to work, have quite some good food to eat around here, it is near Leisure Mall can go to KLCC, flexible working hours, can cabut anytime!! :D

What more have to squeeze in the KTM Komuter!

Getting out from home to relax also.

malcolm, pool or no pool, i still envy u cuz no need travel to work! dats d worst part cuz i drag my butt off d bed every single morning b4 dawn n then work till late by d time i return home its dark... i nvr see d sun for 5 days evry week! so pathetic... d only consolation is dat i remain fair n not hafta worry about sunspots.

From this month onwards, I am trying to sleep early and wake up early.
I have been wanting to be a morning person for a long time but I am so addicted to the Internet. At times I just get glued to to my laptop chatting with friends, writing some post on a blog, fiddle with some of my old programming projects in uni and etc etc etc etc.

Chatting on Yahoo! is my addiction. I seem to like to kacau ppl online by buzzing my friends. hehe :D

How to be more discipline ar? Be in bed by 10pm and wake up by 6am.
I do need 8 hours of sleep one.. I am just like a baby la...hehe
Less 30 minutes and the whole day will just be not productive.
Then I will resort to curi-curi chat online in the day since I can't think much.
When boss comes, I will quickly turn it off! muahahahahaha...

ah boh ah...i understand how u feel!
i had that regime while doing my posting in IJN & HOSPIS Malaysia earlier this yr. i was bunking in with Buvana for a month in puchong...and though the places would have been so near if only PUCHONG had some lrt or even the soooo unlikable KTM...but nope...all it had were buses...and i had to wake up at 5, catch 6am bus...and somedays arrived home close to 8pm.
boy...was i glad that it wasnt my fized routine! though it was great to be staying with frenz though ;)

changed the tyre just now. Test drive around here.
Since it is raining, tak jadi keluar to fix the flat tyre!

How much does it cost to patch up the hole for a no-tube tyre? (i think mine is without tube).
What about tyre with tube? How much ar?

hmmm... quite off topic la, talking about tayars and whatnot...=P

anyway, for me, i expected to make the transition from academic life to working life without a hitch... hehe, guess i tend to think myself more capable than i really am... because adapting to working life was much more difficult than i anticipated.

and i was working in a college (as a student counsellor), which means my environment was actually more sheltered in comparison to those of u in the big, bad corporate world... not much of office politics, corruption and etc... but still found it hard.

for one thing, i couldn't ponteng anymore... uni days, i could ponteng as much as i wanted to and still get the grades... working, cannot ponteng one...

then, when i found myself unhappy in my job and was thinking of changing jobs, i realised how different working is to studying... in academic life, everything is planned out (e.g. 2 years form 6, then 3 years degree, then graduate). but now that we've graduated, our whole lives stretch out before us... and we could do (almost) ANYTHING!

so many choices... and each choice has implications and consequences which are greater than those we had to make in uni... also got more things to worry abt now... paying rent, transport, food... things that used to be no prob...

i guess in some ways i miss the carefree student days... (mayb for medic students like lavanya not so carefree... haha thank God i didn't do medic after all) but growth and maturity are found in moving forwards, not backwards... although sometimes life seems so much more difficult and dreary than it used to be, meeting those challenges and overcoming them is part of becoming an adult...

so, though i cherish the past, i strive to enjoy the present... and as for the future, i believe that the best is yet to be! =)

ok, that's a pretty long post... hope i hvn't bored everyone to death...=) look forward to hearing other's opinions on this interesting conversation topic.

p.s. about unemployment, i think it's mostly ppl who can't spk english who can't get employment... for those of us proficient in the 'international' language, it shouldn't be a problem. just my 2 cents.=P

haha, actually i'm not working in the college anymore... i'm a contract staff with an NGO now (read my intro/'registration' info carefully).

Sieh Jin! Nice seeing you here.

Saw Malcolm's link to the NGO you're working with. So I see you've chosen a distinct path in life compared to the rest of us. Hope it does yourself and others good.

So how long have you been there so far?

siehjin
05-07-2006, 06:47 PM
Lavanya:
no prob... it was abit too brief, mayb not clear enough.=)

now, i work with secondary school students... slightly larger age gap, but i think still can connect... at least i hope so la, and they're not thinking "who's this wierd old guy who's trying to make friends with me?!?" hahaha.

colleagues, ya i have colleagues... previous job don hv; like yr college counsellor, i held the fort alone... my colleagues, they are older than me... but so far no probs la, can get along pretty well... haven't really gelled together yet, that will probably take abit more time as we work together on various projects...

Malcolm
wow, u found our website! hehehe. since u all now know where i work, come find me if u happen to be in the vicinity la=)

Chung Ming
distinct path in life? well... i guess so!=) actually things aren't set in concrete yet, i'm a contract staff... it's kinda like a probation period for me to c if i really wan to commit to the organization and also for them to see if they realy wan to hire me... after 3 months i can apply to be a full-time staff lor.

one of the options still floating for me is teaching... i've applied online for kpli (kursus perguruan lepasan ijazah). but actually i'm happy where i am at the moment, so i'm a little worried about which path i should choose if my application is actually successful! =P on a side note, i just heard today that ling fong is currently doing kpli...

i've only been with Scripture Union for about a month and a half now... i think the rest of u who didn't do stpm have about 2 year of working experience behind u already right? not like me, still fresh n trying to find my feet...=)

thanks for the encouragement ("hope it does others and yourself good"). that's my hope too; to impact the lives of young people in a positive way. that's one reason why i'm considering teaching; as a teacher i'd have the privilege of being involved in shaping and guiding many young lives. hopefully i don give them any 'ajaran sesat' la, haha!=D

All

enjoyed academic life. enjoying working life (albeit the long hours). never feared unemployment. (ok, maybe a little after i graduated but that was because i didn't know what i want to do and not because i can't get a job. that thought never crossed my mind.)

it's good that we have more humane friends like you working in the NGO and preferring career paths that are so noble as teaching. unlike us in the corporate world where climbing high at all cost only matters. it's only when you have God to ground you to the things and people who truly matters in your life that you remain sane. :) cheers!

malcolm

so cheap!!??!!

standard already RM 130. went to 2 shops to checkout.

So you ppl out there, try not to park at secluded parking lots especially on a working day.
Someone mischievious person may just want to puncture your tyre. One foreman at the tyre shop suspected so; pointed me the cut too. Sigh...

I didn't need to think of all these when I was studying. Working life a little more complex...
Do you drive Sieh Jin

siehjin
05-08-2006, 10:42 AM
Chui Lin:
hey!=) thanks for the compliment... actually i'm wondering if it's true that i'm more 'humane' n 'noble', heheh... i guess it's just that my personality, my values, and my mix of capabilities makes me more suitable for this kind of job rather than the corporate kind... and in a way, i wonder if it's abit 'cowardly' of me, to run away from the big, bad corporate world and just hide in a more sheltered environment...

i'd also challenge the idea that in the corporate world, "climbing high at all cost only matters"... and i think u know that, as u mentioned some of the things that "truly matters" in your next line.=)

as christians, we talk about the idea of vocation or calling (does islam have this concept too, malcolm? lavanya, what about hinduism?) meaning that we're not at our jobs just to get bread, or just to get ahead... but that we're called by God to fulfill His purposes in the work that we do. the troublesome part for some, is finding out what those purposes are...=)

Malcolm:
well, i have a driver's licence but no car at the moment... my dad did offer to get me one, but with my present salary i don't think i can afford the maintenance and the petrol, so i told him "not yet"... hopefully i'll learn to drive the office van soon, then i can start driving that when i need to go on short trips... but another problem would be, i'm not familiar with kl roads and my sense of direction sucks... i can see myself getting lost in kl every day when i eventually try to drive.=)

if your nature of your job doesn't require you to travel regularly and public transport is convenient, I suggest not to drive a car unless someone is paying the bills of your car!!! :D

My friends drive to work, pay tolls, pay parking - they don't have money money left by the end of the month. Save now Sieh Jin!

hehe...malcolm, tatz a very sound advice.

i used to tell myself...when i start working, i will get a car 1st.
but now, with the increase in fuel + toll price...not to mention abt maintenance etc etc...if i am living in a houseman quarters drg my beginner yrs as a junior doc, am thinking "why shud i get a car??"

with the meager salary...hmmmm. so now new line of thinking...i wouldnt mind maintaining wif a bicycle to get around whicheva town i'm posted to ;) and well...that will help me get some 'exercise' which even now i dun have time for :(

siehjin

actually, i would prefer a manual car... because:
1. it's cheaper
2. there's less chance of things going wrong (simpler system mah)
3. i've more control over d car's acceleration and deceleration
4. i've more control over d car's petrol consumption
5. somehow, is more 'fun' to drive=)

guess both also got their pros n cons la...

but guess wat, i didnt tot of that until now when im a 'working student' (work full time n study part time) n i finally realised the worst-est curse of them all is having to cope with exams + boss + deadlines simultaneously!

yeah, i can imagine the stress... most of my friends who are accountants and actuarists are also suffering the 'work and study' double burden. but for every external paper they pass, their salary gets bumped up a few hundred... so i guess that's a pretty good incentive.=)

apart from the money, i'd think that the sense of personal achievement and the fact that u r becoming a better and better expert in your field should help u keep going thru the tough times. so, don't give up! =)

My work more hands on one, so not many times get called when i'm on leave. Even if get called when i on leave, it means they need something urgently and need my advise on where i've left off so that other colig can take over the task. When i come back, my outstanding job already done...isn't this better?:D

when i was studying, i tot exams were the curse of my life. when im working, i tot my boss + deadlines are a worst curse. Separately, im confident i can cope cuz its challenging and wat is life without challenges eh?

but guess wat, i didnt tot of that until now when im a 'working student' (work full time n study part time) n i finally realised the worst-est curse of them all is having to cope with exams + boss + deadlines simultaneously!

i fell like this is d most suffering time i have thru to reach the light at d end... die loh... if i cud go back in time, i might think twice.
*hugs* boh!
as ur principle goes....Cest la Vie!
Susah-susah dahulu, senang-senang kemudian. i agree wif SiehJin the only reason working ppl (wif deadlines & being dead tired after a long long day at work) would take up part-time studies is to better themselves & pave the way for bigger fatter pay ;)..and continuously keeping up to date with ur profession, compared to colleagues who have lost touch wif studying world, im sure...gambateh!

Lavanya:
nope, haven't tried out the van yet... i'm on holiday now actually, in kota kinabalu visiting my mom n dad.=) will be back in kl on saturday.

yeah, i can imagine the stress... most of my friends who are accountants and actuarists are also suffering the 'work and study' double burden. but for every external paper they pass, their salary gets bumped up a few hundred... so i guess that's a pretty good incentive.=)

apart from the money, i'd think that the sense of personal achievement and the fact that u r becoming a better and better expert in your field should help u keep going thru the tough times. so, don't give up! =)

thankx for d encouragement! as for d salary bumping upwards, i think no such trend exist in my co. lah, boss kiamsap fella, cheh... anyway i'd rather do it for personal achievement as u say rather than to impress any1.

Wat exams are u taking? CIMA isit? dats a tough one....I was lucky dat I took my ACCA fulltime....so when I came to Penang to work in PwC, I have the luxury to witness my colleagues working n studying at the same time.....

On the subject Study Life vs Working life....I do miss the care free days during my U days.....but nothing can beat earning n spending your money...:)

yeah, sumtimes i wonder why i chose cima cuz its tougher than acca (according to my seniors lah) but then i do like the syllabus better. i once had d luxury to study it fulltime but impatient & ambitious me wanted to break into corporate life asap n earn my own $$ so i grab d first good job dat came along.

Hmmm...jumpa during study life vs jumpa during working life...still within topic, rite? I think during study time easier to find partner, you get to meet more people who have things in common with you, you know their background, and go out in group to know the person better before making your decision. More option too.
During working life, you only get to know your colleagues or business associates. If you are working in a small organisation, then the number of people you meet also limited.

Now i'm still at work! So it's already 13 hours at at today. Yeah, I shudder to think that if i had not met my husband, i would definitely still remain single...as i have not met anyone else after him whom i am attracted to.
2 of my female colleagues, in their early 30's, attractive and single...commented it's very difficult to find a suitable man at their age. This is what she said " 40% of the man ard this age group are GAY:eek: , 40% are married, left 20%. From the mere 20%, not easy to find one that is suitable.

Talking bout that and linking to what Chris C said earlier, another perk of working in the bank is the high female to male ratio. So there's lots to look at. Dont mind watching for 8 hours a day :D Not to mention the fraternising involved hahaha.

hahaha...nice to read the chats there. hmm...meeting the 'one' - those who have found urs...really mus count ur blessings lo :)

shirl has a point...about mingling part & all. daboss is oso rite about some ppl u cant tahan...but have to see the faces daily, and play it cool. mana nak find soul-mate!

though a student...i think i'm in pretty much wrong setting o find 'the one'...haha, maybe me too choosy or wat, i duno....coz i know wat i want, and not willing to settle for less. and trust me...the 1st few criteria itself so hard to find ppl who fit-in. so like wat sieh jin mentioned somewhere about his fear drg secondary school...hehe, i might lead a life of celibacy after all.

esp after today's O&G semiar i attended in Bkt Jll IMU...and talking to our lecturers & some drs about working life....i've really started to think would it be fair for patients, myself...and future famiy (if i settle & have one someday) for me to sacrifice dreams/working towards expanding career & passion VS compromising family member's needs!

its tough for gals in general...guys senang je, like wat dato siva told (our head of dep in imu) he married a teacher, who's able to care for kids...while he's busy attending all the calls etc. padahal poor gals...drams ada...sumore must compete wif guys in the competitive med world...and then as yrs go by...saham turun lagi. its usually all the good ones around u are taken...and those outside this profession will be 'fearful' of u dee...must clap 2 hands to produce sound mah. not easy peezy

so only thing possible is focus on day-to-day life...live to fullest...pursue dreams to be a complete being. if get s1 to share - cool! else...well...a gal can survive in today's world, nope? ;)
hope my parents can but these points....when the time comes. ohhh...tatz one reason i'm not looking forward to finish studies...housemanship etc etc...all ur relatives will 'start' as they cant stand seeing s1 single & happy :p must push u into the 'gaung'

Now i'm still at work! So it's already 13 hours at at today. Yeah, I shudder to think that if i had not met my husband, i would definitely still remain single...as i have not met anyone else after him whom i am attracted to.2 of my female colleagues, in their early 30's, attractive and single...commented it's very difficult to find a suitable man at their age. This is what she said " 40% of the man ard this age group are GAY:eek: , 40% are married, left 20%. From the mere 20%, not easy to find one that is suitable.

SS2006, it is only logical that you have not met someone else after your husband. If you do, hmmmm, something is wrong somewhere, no? :p

Haha... I already consider myself pretty generous compared to some others out there :D

Actually I don't mind spending on the ladies as long as we have lots of fun... problem is that not many ladies are able to let go easily... must be all the work stress or overly high expectations of dates.

I usually spend my first couple of dates with a new girl just assessing that bit... seeing what is behind the public mask and what kind of "fun-monster" she really is. If the indicators are good, cost doesn't matter... I pretty much blew away my study loan back in Uni on my last long-term girlfriend (thank god the stock market helped me recoup that :D ) but that was fun while it lasted.

People are always so reserved on first dates aren't they?

Actually I kinda agree with the fact that girls are meant to be pampered... I know it sounds cliche but men should just suck it in and make them happy whenever you can...

I always get a certain satisfaction watching a girl getting what she wants knowing that I played a role in it (and the possible rewards later :D)

It differs from person to person...but i think generally a girl would want the partner to be there for her always. and hmmm...oso, to have a good fren in him.

05-31-2006, 12:53 PM
anyways, let me restart the working life vs student life thingy..

i LOVED studying!!! I hated exams.

Assignments were okay, provided it's flexible and we get to choose our own topics. Uni in Australia was great. A lot of choices and flexible.

My point spread was usually 25% exams 65% assignments 10% participation.

so, u are kinda forced into speaking up in classes. which wasnt a problem for me, but most asian students had it tough.

had plenty of free time as a student. we only had 12 official hours a week of studies, we are supposed to put in an extra 36 hours a week on our own.. but who does anyway?

the bad part of it... lack of $$$..

working life is great too.. i earned good $$$ as a freshie.. much much more than my other peers. A Sales job can be a great thing becos your income is set by yourself. the better u do, the more commission u get..

the bad thing.. got $$.. no time..

but working can be very depressing too.. esp when u feel no satisfaction in your work or dealing with people within your company or people outside.. people always feel that they dont get paid what they are worth..

let me say this.. you will NEVER get paid what you are worth. it's simple economics.

if you make $100,000 in nett profits for the company and the company pay you $100,000, then what does the company make then? nothing..

so, usually you will get paid only between 5% -20% of what you are worth to the company. when i put it that way... sad right??

so, what are the alternatives?

i decided to go into business on my own..

also got issues.. non consistent income, need lots of self motivation, bears all the risk. there have been times where i get no income for 2 months.. and then the next month, i get a windfall... so, i need to have a lot of discipline to manage my finances.. which is something i havent been great at.. so it's also a learning process..

Ah Boh
05-31-2006, 01:15 PM
thank u bizzi, for getting tis back on track.

sumhow i simply cant do a sales job. not dat i dont have opportunity or boasting ya... ppl say im outspoken, friendly, nice face, good english n i bet if i take it up i'll do very well.

but i just dun like d tot of getting insulted by customers hvg to use my god-given charms to sell sumtin i dun believe in. worse, getting swindled by d company who pays u only 5% or so of ur earnings. cheh!
