Its just that I think England is all hype and no substance. Every tournament also they can win! But when it comes to actually doing something, they get outclassed big time... Like Euro 1996, Euro 2000, Euro 2004, 2002 World Cup, etc.
They got the best hype mechanism in the world, namely their media. But they havent won ANY football tournament since 1966...

This is the most dangerous thing about Brazil. Every world cup, they go in as if the Cup is for them to collect and then they kaput. Only the last 3 seasons, they performed up to expectations. Do you still remember that year Paolo Rossi kicked them out of the World Cup?

Exactly... the 1982 team was even more of a favourite than this 2006 team. But look what happened. 1998 as well.... The rule for world cup is "OVERWHELMING FAVOURITES NEVER WIN"

BTW, I think the 1990 England was one of the best I've ever seen. Gazza was awesome. The 1996 Euro team too was great. IMHO, Both squads were better than the present squad. 1986 was great too...

Quote from the Star today - 17 April 2006
Football fans get set for World Cup madness
PETALING JAYA: There is still about two months to go for the greatest show on earth – the FIFA Football World Cup – but Malaysians are already gripped in soccer fever.
Football fans are already planning their schedule around the World Cup in Germany from June 9 to July 9.
Many have submitted leave applications, especially for the second half of the tournament in late June and early July, when the action heats up with the quarter-finals.
LCD and plasma television screens are also high on the list of World Cup necessities with football fans. Retailers and manufacturers have taken the cue, with many advertising special offers on LCD and plasma televisions.
Some are giving discounts of up to RM2,000, besides throwing in free gifts and competitions, where the winner gets to go to Germany to watch the matches.
Food outlets and nightspots are also planning ahead for the World Cup, investing in television sets and satellite TV subscriptions to draw the crowd for live telecasts late in the nights and early mornings in Malaysia.
Employers, however, are saying that work must go on during the World Cup and have urged workers to not come in late to work.

BBC's Predictor site (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sol/shared/spl/hi/predictor/html/football/world_cup_06/default.stm) & Reknowned Statistician Dr. Henry Stott's Predictor (http://www.dectech.org/times/Predictor.html)
I used Stott's predictor to simulate the matches... then I filled up the BBC predictor with Stott's most likely outcome. I gave home advantage where I thought it was due...
Result was a Sweden vs England finals with Sweden winning the World Cup!!!!
Germany, Brazil, Argentina all went out in the 2nd round... Bummer.

Turning his life around was good...but how can we look up to someone who scored a goal with his hands!
For England to win, Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard have to be on form. Gerrard has played one two many games this season. Defence is going to be a problem, I always have doubts over the Neville sister and Rio Ferdinand ( I may be bias) but with Ledley King injured and Sol Campbell playing way below par. Upfront, boy wonder Owen still injured. Although being a pool fan, I still fell that the Crouch is not up to world cup standard yet.
Whoever wins, its certainly a glorious year, EPL ending in May..spend some time with the wife. World Cup for one month, spend some time with wife in July, August its back to the EPL!!!
Maybe we should get together for one of the matches. It always more fun watching with other crazy lunatics.

neville brothers only gary will be on the right back...he maybe not be defensively solid but he can put a good cross in
as for rio...we always have wes brown here who can do an equally good job so no worry there...my only worry is who will be the strike partner for rooney
crouch is certainly not world class standard....vassel also not doing well atm but fowler is getting back on form....still....we NEED OWEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yo bro... you talk as if no England player has done anything wrong on (or off) the field. Leaving morality aside, talking pure skill, Maradona was 2nd to none (not even Pele)... Having watched football in the 80s and 90s, surely you must agree with that. What he did for Napoli was virtually a miracle.. Scoring with your hand is wrong - same as diving in the box for a penalty.
My contention against the hand-of-God is always one question (the same query Lineker asked off the record during an interview). Maradona is 5'5", Shilton is 6'3" at least. Don't tell me he couldn't have punched the ball before Maradona touched it.
I just feel England lacks pedigree when it comes to football. They have a lot of supporters in malaysia because of the popularity of EPL... not due to their Artistry. Artistic football? Brazil, Holland, Argentina, even Cameroon... but definately not England. That doesn't mean they won't win the World Cup... England has enough firepower to whack anyone, even Brazil. But i don't think they can outplay Brazil or Argentina. I've never seen that happen in my lifetime. Even that recent victory of theirs against Argentina occured during the last 5-7 minutes, with Riquelme substituted and with Crouch coming in to cause confusion in the box. Argentina dominated the game, as they did the 2002 WC encounter. They lost, bummer, but they were not outplayed. England won fair and square, granted.
I am a fan of English players... Lineker, Gazza, Hoddle, Waddle, Shilton, Platt, Lampard, Rooney. Just not their game or their hype machine.

Latest news Big Phil turned down the offer to coach England. Too much media attention as the reason for him to say NO. I gues his is correct to say that British media attention. Look what happened to Ericsson. I guess McClaren will be back in the spotlight for the next England No. 1.:cheesy:
Good luck!!

Could Argentina won the WC without Maradona in 1986? Could France won the WC without Zidane in 1998?
No dis-respect to other English players but Rooney is THAT important to England!! If he can recover and get fit during the first stage of the WC, I think Sven will still risk naming him in his squad.

Don't worry Rooney will play in the World Cup cos Nike has spent Millions of dollars for Rooney to put on the Nike 90 boots. Nike will pay for his foot to heal on time. I am not sure would it help England if he is forced to play even if he is half fit.
Ironically it was the new Nike 90 boots that Rooney worn for the first time in the Man U vs Chelsea game that he broke his foot. Maybe just don't fit him well.
In this world of sports which depends on heavy sponsorships to survive, the sponsor controls the game and selection of players for the world cup. Believe it or not but it is a true fact that is happening now.
Sponsors Rules this World Cup!!
But it is good for us footie fans, without sponsors we will not be able to watch all 64 Live games in this year's world cup. So good for us but bad for the team.

Although, I never support Roney when he wears the red shirt, for England's sake, I must admit that it will be almost impossible for them to win the Cup without Rooney. He is very good!

Extremely important advice and recommendations to be passed on to wives, girlfriends, fiancés, mothers, sisters, daughters, etc. (to all women in general) These rules are to be communicated prior to the World Cup in June/July this year...
List Of Rules.
1. >From 9 June to 9 July 2006, you should read the sports section of the newspaper so that you are aware of what is going on regarding the World Cup, and that way you will be able to join in the conversations. If you fail to do this, then you will be looked at in a bad way, or you will be totally ignored. DO NOT complain about not receiving any attention.
2. During the World Cup, the television is mine, at all times, without any exceptions. If you even take a glimpse of the remote control, you will lose it (your eye).
3. If you have to pass by in front of the TV during a game, I don't mind, as long as you do it crawling on the floor and without distracting me. If you decide to stand nude in front of the TV, make sure you put clothes on right after because if you catch a cold, I wont have time to take you to the doctor or look after you during the World Cup month.
4. During the games I will be blind, deaf and mute, unless I require a refill of my drink or something to eat. You are out of your mind if you expect me to listen to you, open the door, answer the telephone, or pick up the baby that just fell from the second floor....it wont happen.
5. It would be a good idea for you to keep at least 2 six packs in the fridge at all times, as well as plenty of things to nibble on, and please do not make any funny faces to my friends when they come over to watch the games. In return, you will be allowed to use the TV between 12am and 6am, unless they replay a good game that I missed during the day.
6. Please, please, please!! if you see me upset because one of my teams is losing, DO NOT say "get over it, its only a game", or "don't worry, they'll win next time". If you say these things, you will only make me angrier and I will love you less. Remember, you will never ever know more about football than me and your so called "words of encouragement" will only lead to a break up or divorce.
7. You are welcome to sit with me to watch one game and you can talk to me during halftime but only when the commercials are on, and only if the halftime score is pleasing me. In addition, please note I am saying "one" game, hence do not use the World Cup as a nice cheesy excuse to "spend time together".
8. The replays of the goals are very important. I don't care if I have seen them or I haven't seen them, I want to see them again. Many times.
9. Tell your friends NOT to have any babies, or any other child related parties or gatherings that requires my attendance because:
a) I will not go,
b) I will not go, and
c) I will not go.
10. But, if a friend of mine invites us to his house on a Sunday to watch a game, we will be there in a flash.
11. The daily World Cup highlights show on TV every night is just as important as the games themselves. Do not even think about saying "but you have already seen this...why don't you change the channel to something we can all watch??", the reply will be: "Refer to Rule #2 of this list".
12. And finally, please save your expressions such as "Thank God the World Cup is only every 4 years". I am immune to these words, because after this comes the Champions League, Italian League, Spanish League, Premier League, etc etc.
Thank you for your cooperation.

England's Provisional World Cup Squad
Goalkeepers: Paul Robinson, David James, Robert Green.
Defenders: Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Sol Campbell, Jamie Carragher, Wayne Bridge.
Midfielders: David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick, Owen Hargreaves, Jermaine Jenas, Stewart Downing, Joe Cole, Aaron Lennon.
Forwards: Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Peter Crouch, Theo Walcott.
Aaron Lennon and Theo Walcott are two shock inclusions in England's World Cup squad, with Ledley King, Darren Bent, Shaun WP and Jermain Defoe ignored.
Is Sven thinking of creating a new "Rooney" ? Walcott is only 17 years old, just like Rooney when he played in Euro 2004.

sven must be out of his mind taking theo walcott to world cup
if he really want to take theo, then he should not have taken aaron lennon
he should give that midfield slot to a striker who i think should be defoe
for god sake look at england striker list
rooney - 80% not able to play till like quarter or semifinal...and even so fitness level will be low
owen - still suffering from previous injuries and not yet 100% heal so fitness level is still quite low
crouch - is he good enough for world cup...i don think so
theo - he may be good but that is future issue...he has not even play for arsenal, how do u expect him to play for england ?
liao this sven is really out of his mind... he need 1 more striker to cover that area

Looks like Gerard and Terry could be playing upfront with the team that Sven picked. Crouch and Walcott the only 'fit' strikers in there. The other English strikers who didn't get picked must be feeling really bad...beaten by a giraffe and a raw 'interesting' talent. Hmm...
Sol Campbell, Owen Hargreaves (anyone know how well he is playing in Germany?) and Wayne Bridge is also in the squad!!Looks like Sven is prepared to gamble a lot. He is getting lots of criticism here. Personally, I don't think he cares that much anymore.
and West Brown is not in the squad...bummer!
Good luck England...looks like they need it a lot now.

Talk is rife that Eriksson might go for 4-5-1, using his midfield strength to get the goals.
Probable line-ups:
Robinson
Neville Terry Ferdinand A. Cole
Beckham Gerrard Carrick Lampard J. Cole
Owen
Carrick will sit back and do the defending, leaving Lampar and Stevie G to roam forward. J Cole also good at playing in the hole..:amused:
If all else fails, throw in the giraffe and pump in the crosses!

Like England Captain, David B said :
There is enough strength in depth to win the World Cup without Rooney. We'd rather have Wayne in the team on and off the pitch. He's great off the pitch and everyone knows what he can do on it. But we've got other world-class players. A lot of them are club captains and have won huge games.

Looking at how Ghana can sink Czech Republic and the US and therefore make it to the last 16, makes me think that this team is a truly awesome lot and being debutants in WC2006, who knows that even minnows can give their worthy opponents a HEFTY run for their money.....catch them tackle the Brazilian Sambamen tomoro nite/wee hours of Monday morning.............
I hope Ghana defend like crazy and after 90mins+extra time, they win by penalty... :p

Ghana's game is about attacking. If they defend, they are going to lose. The only way to win is to go all out attacking.

This theory is currently being circulated in the
cyber world.
Will it work this year? Lets just wait and see if this theory is proven
right.
1. Brazil won in 1994 and before that won in 1970
1970 + 1994 = 3964
2. Argentina won its last world cup in 1986 and before that in 1978
1978 + 1986 = 3964
3. Germany won its last world cup in 1990 and before that in 1974
1974 + 1990 = 3964
4. In 2002 and 1962, Brazil won the championships
1962 + 2002 = 3964
5. So it is logical, if we want to predict what will happen this year, to
then look for another year that
would verify the formula .
3964 - 2006 = 1958 ...
Brazil was the champion in 1958, so we conclude Brazil will win this year .
Good luck to all of you who put on bets this World Cup.
maybe for the next World Cup 2010..Germany..cz in 1954 West Germany won the World Cup..hope so laa..:)
