they shouldn't change it in the first place. looks like mosley (is it mosley?) takut the builders make their own race.

part 1 - 15 mins, all car run, as many laps as like, slowest 6 go to back of grids...
part 2 - 15 mins, 16 cars left, as many laps as like, slowest 6 fill position 11-16...
part 3 - 20 mins 10 cars left, also as many laps as like, position as best timed...
and yes, smaller engine but unlimited tyre change...
but must make final choice of dry-weather compound ahead of qualifying...

Can't believe F1 is going to start next weekend! Yee har!!
22 cars trying to get a good qualifying time in 15 minutes. That sounds very challenging. All about timing and getting a good run without any traffic jams. Hahaha!
Looked for more about the new qualifying rules in www.formula1.com. Yes, it is easier to understand than the offside rule. LOL
Extract from that website:
"A number of changes to both the Sporting and Technical Regulations have been made by the FIA for the 2006 Formula One season.
Qualifying
For 2006, the single-lap system used in recent years is replaced be a new three-part, knockout format, with multiple cars on track throughout the qualifying hour, which is split into two 15-minute sessions and a final 20-minute session, with five-minute breaks in between.
Part one: All 22 cars may run laps at any time during the first 15 minutes of the hour. At the end of the first 15 minutes, the six slowest cars drop out and fill the final six grid places.
Part two: After a five-minute break, the times will be reset and the 16 remaining cars then will then run in a second 15-minute session - again they may complete as many laps as they want at any time during that period. At the end of the 15 minutes, the six slowest cars drop out and fill places 11 to 16 on the grid.
Part three: After another five-minute break, the times are reset and the final 20-minute session will feature a shootout between the remaining 10 cars to decide pole position and the starting order for the top 10 grid places. Again, these cars may run as many laps as they wish.
In the first two 15-minute sessions, cars may run any fuel load and drivers knocked out after those sessions may refuel ahead of the race. However, the top-ten drivers must begin the final 20-minute session with the fuel load on which they plan to start the race. They will be weighed before they leave the pits, and whatever fuel they use in the 20 minutes may be replaced at the end of the session.
If a driver is deemed to have stopped unnecessarily on the circuit or impeded another driver during the qualifying session, then his times will be cancelled.
Engines
For 2006, engines are reduced in size from the previous 3-litre V10s to 2.4-litre V8s. The aim is to reduce costs and improve safety. With similar engine speeds, the change is expected to cut peak power by around 200bhp, which in turn is likely to add around three to five seconds to lap times at most circuits. The FIA may allow some teams to use 2005-spec V10s if they do not have access to competitive V8. The FIA will enforce a rev limit on any V10s to ensure performance is comparable with that of a V8.
Tyres
After a season’s absence, tyre changes during races return to Formula One in 2006. The thinking behind this is that the reduced engine size will offset any performance gain. Drivers also have access to slightly more tyres than in 2005 - seven sets of dry-weather, four sets of wet-weather and three sets of extreme-weather. Drivers must make a final choice of dry-weather compound ahead of qualifying."

absolutely delighted with kimi's performance yesterday...
still upset though his car let him down on saturday...
but goes to show too that maclaren does have good cars...
just need to be more reliable, and performing all the time...
afterall, kimi was on full fuel loads yesterday...
with only one pit stop, he was also disadvantaged that he didn't have fresh tyres for most of the race...
he was also setting a new first sector time just before his rear suspension collapsed...
definitely need to watch out for the rookie rosberg...
a couple more seasons to mature, he'll be the next driving genius...

Yeah Kimi really did well despite the odds stacked against him. Unfortunately his car is the one that always let him down. Dunno if it's just plain bad luck or what but it always have to happen to him.
At any rate this season will be an interesting one. McLaren, Renault, Ferrari all have a solid chance of taking the title and who knows, Honda may just join the fray as well, looking at how Button did.

got to strike a balance there somewhere i guess...

Wat abt Rossi coming in from MotoGP?i am torn about this issue actually...
i've always been a maclaren girl so to speak...
so supporting kimi is pretty much an extension of it...
and he's really good, so the support is much justified...
kimi moving to ferrari will tear my loyalty into two...
because i do want to continue to support him, but not to cheer for ferrari...
as for rossi coming in from moto gp, that would be very interesting...
he still need time for now to get into things for competitive driving...
it's too early to tell right now, but there's definitely a lot of potential there...
he could even be better than massa for all we know...

I'm a Mc Laren and Kimi fan. If Kimi switches, I think I'll stick to McL and support Alonso.
Where I'm concern, the best F1 driver ever = Mika 'Flyin Finn' Hakinnen based on his overataking maneuver with Shumi at Hokenheim.
Flat Out!

Yeah, McLaren needs to improve. JPM could not even compete with the other top teams in terms of speed. Renault is still the team to beat. They got the best package and they are brilliant with their strategies.
yep... sorry for both the williams costworth drivers.. that's the difference between a poorly funded team and teams with bottomless pockets...
that's true. williams have done well so far. at least they have managed to secure 2 good drivers in webber and rosberg. There was an amusing piece before the race started. Someone posted a question to Mark Blundell of the ITV F1 team. 'How does the drivers travel from their hotel to the circuit?' Mark went to the drivers parking area. He showed Renault drivers drove top-of-the-range Renault cars, BMW drivers drove top-of-the-range BMW cars, Mercedes drivers drove top-of-the-range Mercedes cars and so forth. When he came to Nico Rosberg, guess what he was given to drive? The best in Malaysia....a white Proton Wira  I guess everybody has to start from somewhere right?

if you give schuey a good and reliable car, he still have the upperhand to Alonso. now we need Kimi to put in a few good performances so that there will be more competition. The last 2 races have been quite dull...not much overtaking :(

i'm pretty glad that the 2 renaults are on the front row actually. even if the ferrari's had been in front, they would most likely lose it to the renaluts who are known to have better speeds off the lines, especially with the longer straight at barcelona. so, settling in 3rd, schummi should have a fuel advantage over the blues, and should play well into his hands. let's hope massa has more 'b@lls' to push compared to the last race. granted he was contented with a first podium finish, but his adrenaline should still be pumping from then.
my prediction 1st schummi, 2nd raikonen, 3rd alonso
