In Setapak, bird flu viruses were also discovered.

Ok! No need to panic yet!!! The bird flu H5N1 virus still containable virus...The transmission via close contact or direct contact with poultry...live one leh...
So far the reported case transmission thru this, ther is no air born disease from poultry to human or human to human transmission yet...That is the main worried for the health department..But they think this way of transmission will occurs and will cuase million or billion to be affected...So prevention is the best way...:)

Huh? You order Tamiflu yourself? I thought you are supposed to get the jab fron your GP?
As far as I understand, Tamiflu for common flu...bird flu no vaccine so far.
If you have Tamiflu, you are not vulnerable to common flu anymore...and if you still get flu, then it is likely to be birdflu...so the doctor will go straight to test you out for bird flu diagnosis and treatment instead of wasting time trying to determine whether its common flu or not. Doctor Zazu and Doc Alfred, please clarify.

Tamilfu is a antiviral drug comes in Tablets form...For Flu vaccine jab there is northen and southern strain of vaccine...Some report said it can help if bird flu occurs but dono leh effective or not..If so worried then go for this flu vaccine jab or I think now still southern strain leh....For the bird flu currently no vaccine being produced because of high mutation rate for the virus..They are waiting for the actual infection to occurs then onli vaccine can be made..There is no epidemic occuring lah..So normal flu stil we treat as normal lor, unless with sign and symtoms of lung involvement...then onli we suspect bird flu....:)

As far as I know, it is not airborne....as along as you don't play with chicken sh*t, it should be okay. Also, the people who had it were usually living with the chickens in close proximity. As far as Sitiawan is concerned, all the swallows' bungalows are a bad idea. Migratory birds can spread the virus.:sad-2:

Scientist in US have genetically engineered a vaccine and successfully tested it in mice. It is manufactured by a genetically engineered adenovirus, and not prepared from virus grown in eggs as in conventional vaccine (as eggs would be in shortage in bird flu outbreak.) They have injected the mice with H5N1 viruses isolated from sick human. Wah-lah! No problem in mice. Not sure yet whether it will work in human.

I was watching TV3 news yesterday.
TV3 interviewed some people in the Kampung.
The people in that Kampung claimed that for the past 2 weeks many chicken died without reason. The chicken look tired, after that it will just die.
What surprised me is that the kampung people got no clue as to "bird flu".

I'm surprised that you are surprised. Not enough information was given to educate the public maa...That's always the M'sian tactic....let the citizen to be the last to know anything. People ignorant, gomen can pretend nothing is happening. If the news go ard exposing everything, then the person will be accused of raising false alarm. Ignorance is bliss, maa...Nobody died yet...nothing to be concerned about. Even if any die, you still cannot conclude it's from birdflu.

shirlene, you're right there's strain H5N1 in germany and france now...
but i do wonder if the situation can be overly dramatic...
i know the implications etc behind this dangerous and mutating strain...
but at the same time, how do we know if this is not something common in birds..?
afterall, prior to this, no one really test for every wild bird found dead in ponds etc...
now though, they're suspicious of even pigeon that was found dead on the road...
another thing to consider if this virus is highly mutated at accelerated rate...
then it'll be akin to HIV and i do doubt the availability of effective vaccine...
afterall, if after all these years there's still no solution to HIV...
do you believe that it'll be so quickly that they've found a solution against bird flu..?
just some thoughts...

Q: What is bird flu?
A: Avian influenza, or "bird flu" is a disease that usually infects only birds. The bird flu virus affecting poultry and some people in Asia is the H5N1 strain of the virus.
This form spreads rapidly through poultry, and can kill entire flocks. It began in poultry in Hong Kong in February 2003, and has affected birds in Asia and Europe. The virus involved is a variant associated with the 1997 Hong Kong outbreak.
Q: How does bird flu affect people?
A: People are rarely infected with bid flu viruses. So far, those infected with bird flu have had close direct contact with infected birds or their droppings. Other avian influenza viruses have caused mild conditions such as conjunctivitis (eye infection) and mild flu-like symptoms.
To date, most human cases have occurred in rural or semi-urban areas where households keep poultry in their yards or leave the birds to roam freely.
As of Feb 20, there had been 170 reported cases of people with H5N1 infection, in 32 countries in Asia, Europe and Africa. Ninety-two of these have been fatal.
Q: Is it safe to eat poultry and poultry products?
A: Yes, if properly handled during preparation and properly cooked. Avian influenza is not transmitted through cooked food. The H5N1 virus is sensitive to heat. Normal temperatures used for cooking (70°C) will kill the virus. Make sure all parts are fully cooked, with no "pink" parts. Make sure that eggs, too, are properly cooked with no "runny" yolks.
Those who prepare food should wash their hands thoroughly, and clean and disinfect
surfaces in contact with the poultry products. Soap and water are sufficient for this purpose.
Q: What should I do if there is an outbreak where I live?
A: The most important thing is to carefully and regularly wash your hands with soap and water. which helps prevent infection. Also avoid contact with birds, live or dead, wherever possible.
