In hockchew it's called 'kuok kuok bang' - literally means skip skip spread your legs!
I think hockkien called it 'Ar Chi Bui' - literally means ready or not? This is when they try to throw the little stone (or whaterver) in the liitle semi-circle.
Nice game. Easy and cheap with good exercise. :D

I think mine is oval after being banged so hard. Can't be square..else you can't roll the guli. Tak masuk lubang you won't get the chance to whack at other people.
I remember the twins brother (Chin Hing & Chin Huat) were very good at making tops (gasing) from guava trees. One fine day, the classes were adjoured to a clinic as the top landed on one of the twin's head...almost hitting the eyes! I can't remember which one already. Must check the next time I see them. Surely the mark is still there.

i played "seremban" (either 5 stone or 7 stone), and zero-point. big fan of drawing the boxes in the sand, throw the stone and jump around (can't remember the name of the game liao..), play one-leg, kompiang, guli. i played with boys and girls.
at home i played with the neighbor kids, play bola of course, badminton with our dad, masak-masak (hisham always ran away if i tried to make him play masak masak with me, so i end up playing with my soft toys and dolls all by myself), congkak and all kinds of card games, carom. at my grandparents' place in pasir panjang, sometimes we dug holes in the pasir under the house (kampung house lah) and find ant eaters and try to play with them.
i always lost when playing guli (the boys just buli me like crazy) and never could get the gasing to go nicely :(
oh very big in standard six, the World Wildlife Fund sticker collection and the Barbie sticker collection. waaaaah...

Once Upon a time in Front of my 'old' house, there is a electrical supply line, bare aluminium type, hanging on the concrete pole. Instead of running to get the kite up, we came up with an ingenious way to make the kite fly. We will throw the string over the supply line and wait. when the wind comes, viola... the kite will fly .....
now, as i recalled back, i would never, never do that again, who knows, sekali the thread string, if can conduct current, jadi arang already...

Talk about kites, the one that's good for kites-fighthing was the one with the tail split (kaki kangkang). Added with strings coated with grounded glass, you can hear kids applauding and chasing the kite that snapped (the loser) on kaki ayams and their mini bikes. Those were the days when a simple game like this could bring you such joy!

I've played almost all the games mentioned by all of you. As for kite, just 'friendly' ones, no fighting.......and just like Sila, also kena bullied kau-kau by the jantans when I play gulis with them. My gasing playing also 'L' plate only....:o
And another fav' pastime was catching peacock fish at the smelly longkang beside the S'wan mosque. Once, me and my buddy Yee Leng, fried some of the peacock fish and fed it to a skinny sickly looking cat. It ate those fish heartily and after it had enough, the cat wandered off. The next day, me and YL found the cat dead behind our house compound. We felt so guilty that after burying it in a shallow grave, we even burn candles, joss-sticks, put some flowers and say a prayer for the poor cat and asked for forgiveness!:squeeze:
I love climbing trees with the boys too, but later when it's time to come down, I realised that I'm actually afraid of heights. So it took a lot of guts and coaxes from friends to get me safely down. The most dramatic one was having my mom waiting with a cane at the foot of a mangosteen tree telling me how many times had she told me not to climb a tree, but did I listen? The other childhood friends ( useless ones cos' they were the ones who betrayed me by telling my mom that I was stucked up on a tree ) added salt to the wound by giggling and cheering me on.....
So I did climb down safely after about 1/2 an hour, but mommy was too soft hearted to cane me since I was in tears. Luckily my dad was not around. Sure kena whack kau-kau wan....

My favorite game is one of fishing.
I remember once my cousin came up with this crazy idea of using chicken intestines as baits for catfish. Phew that really stinks! Anyway, when we got to the river in some rubber estate, it was raining like cats and dogs. Satu ikan pun tak dapat. Imagine soaking wet in the rain with stinking smell and no fish. What a day! :p

wow....this thread sure brings back many childhood memories, i did most of these too but some of them i did reallllly badly like kites, gasing and guli/ gundu!
the lines with boxes to hop in is called hopscotch (told to us by our dear neighbour Mrs Moses Tay) but we small kids could never remember the name so we always called it hop-hop-hop.
some of us naughty children also made their own bows & arrows with sticks from the hedge and raffia twine as the bowstring, then pretended our cats & dogs were wild animals we were hunting.
another game we played was awai-leh-leh, throwing either a small bola raga or tennis ball in different ways behind for some other kid to catch. wild!
when i was about 10 yrs old my dad made a wooden high jump set. the height in inches was written on with pencil with a hole per inch on each upright stick a nail in and the cross bar was placed across on the 2 nails. the bar itself was a grey one-inch PVC pipe that sagged in the middle and if we wanted to cheat, we jumped in the middle cos it was lower. played this at home in our garden for years.
later on we were lucky enough to have a home-made ping pong table, played lots until the wood of the table warped & cracked. this made the ball bounce funnily and added much more fun to the game trying to guess which way it would bounce!

Boh Pian!! You are definately not fishing fanatic lor...Thats why U talk like that leh....
Aiyah, learn from experience mah. Heavy downpour is definitely not for fishing.
Has anyone tried fishing in the early hours of morning just before dawn? That is a golden moment when the fishes never stops biting.
Hey doctor, have you got a yacht in Sitiawan? Next time, organize a fishing trip for the rest of us yah?
Best part of fishing big fish is "Har Riu"....where you leave your fishing rods overnight....waaa...very exciting loor....especially when you leave about 20-30 rods all over the swamp...and next morning you collect them. If you hear splashing sound.....heart-rate goes up and you rush to go collect them and see how big the fish is.

When it comes to life jackets don't play play man. If I'm the type that goes to sea fishing often, I would buy a really good one. Do you know the normal life jackets will not keep you afloat forever? I think for few hours onli-laa. And also, never use it as a cushion and sit on it, it may not float when you need it.
So fishing trip in loktor's boat on or not?

I don't think you killed the cat-laa, I used to catch those fish by the thousands and feed to my Oscar fish and never had any problems. I think the cat died of something else-leh...
.......u see, we fried those fish on a tin cover, using a bit of cooking oil that we gasak from my house.....and since that cat did kong out on the next morning, somehow we felt that we were indirectly the ones causing it....:squeeze: .....how to know all the 'scientific' facts when we were still in lower primary?...:D

Talking about cats, there was a cat stuck on a ledge on the 2nd floor opposite my house a couple years back. It was there for 3 days liau still cannot get down. So I did what a good guy would do, (i have 2 cats at home) I called the Bomba for help. Told them everything and within 5 minutes heard siren wailing. They came in a big ol truck with the sirens on full blast, when the truck stopped, out jumped about 8 firemen with full fire retardent suits and helmet. I was like huh? So keng one ah, need to do that just to rescue a cat? All the neighbours came out thinking there's a fire. Anyway, after a while, one of them started to climb up to the ledge to get the cat and bring it down. The cat being scared got nowhere to run so it just jumped down! Landed right beside me with a thud and next thing I know it had reached the other end of the block of shops. I've never seen a cat run that fast in my life i tell you. So the Bomba just tapau and went home. I belanja them a can of 100 plus each-lah for the effort.
