history can indeed be very interesting...
and i've been reading on elizabeth the first etc...
philippa gregory writes novel incorporating real history time line...
and it makes it really interesting and i enjoy it very much! :)
i read the other boleyn girl by philippa gregory. loved it.
btw, dino, i know that there's many history books written about the Civil War and others that are supposed to be quite good. i can't recommend any as i am not into reading much other than fiction ;)

My fav presentation of history is HG Wells "An Outline of History"... my dad had a 1930s or 1940s version of the book. Gives a really good birds eye view of history. You can also find an abridged version called Short History of The World (or something like that). I also read books by Felipe Fernandez Ermesto, but his style is very Euro-centric.
More than half my book collection consists of history books... the last one I purchased was "Rubicon" about the republic phase of the Roman empire, just before Julius Ceasar became the dictator.
Ooohh..nice,will go check out those....:)

During school time, I hated this History subject. That's why, after SRP, I bid farewell to this subject.
However, I love to watch movies based on history. :cheesy:

same with me, another subject during school time which i hated and the only one which I had failed in my entire school life - GEOGRAPHY......:o
History sucks during school......so dry and boring as watching paint dry. But when you learn about World History, its much, much more interesting. As usual, lazy people like me just sit in front of TV to learn history...if you ask me to sit there and read.....it better be interesting or i will fall staight to sleep...:o

I'm not much of a reader, but I do love to watch the documentary series about history in Discovery and National G. chanels. Those about Da Vincci r certainly interesting, and one that caught my attention was about Laksamana Cheng Ho, that we didn't get to read in detail during school days. Was wondering why he came to Malaya and was so interested in the malay culture over here and even persuaded the emperor of China to offer one of his princess, Hang Li Po, to Sultan Mansur Shah. It was in Discovery, that I found out that Cheng Ho, was actually a Turkish muslim. So that explained why he was so keen with the people here. And the fleet of ships that accompanied him them, was discovered as the biggest, most advance ships during those days, even better and bigger than the ships in Europe. In fact the number of ships that was with him during those days were more than the number of all the ships in Europe, combined together. And so, if he were to attack Europe then, it won't be much of a problem to him to conquer Europe. But b'cos of jealousy from the aristocrat group, Cheng Ho's hope to continue the expedition was cancelled. Much of his work, records of his expedition were destroyed too. The ships were burnt and left to rot. What a waste!
The history of China as inventors were excellent on the History Channel. Very fascinating stuff.
I haven't seen any Malaysian related stuff on it though....but i am sure it would be more interesting than reading from the text book.

Another fascinating thing is Islamic people during the middle ages. Their advance in medicine and math was impressive but then all kena disrupted because of the Christains i think. If only they thought that kinda history in school...

That is not correct. Christians did nothing of the sort. The decline in Islamic pursuit of knowledge was self imposed by Islamic religious scholars themselves in edicting at some point in time that pursuit of non-religious knowledge is a form of challenging God, and so backwardness befell them, leaving other cultures to pick up on what had already been pioneered by them. ie while the west moved from the superstitious Dark Ages, Moslems decided to engage gear 'R' to get to exactly where the Dark Ages are like with obvious consequences as can be seen today.......

i think history channel is brilliant and i love it...
but house in dublin no satelite so dont watch them anymore...
sila, i've read the other boleyn girl too...
i also read the queen's fool... love them both...
i enjoy the history channel programmes on renaissance italian...
leonardo da vinci, michaelangelo, the medici family etc...
i find them absolutely fascinating...
history in school was quite different in my opinion...
somehow just so concentrated on malayan history...
i am not sure what the syllabus is like right now...
but i think there should be a bit more focus on worldwide history...
events that shaped our lives in modern days perhaps...
i remembered studying so much back then about WWs...
but they were just on asian side and not much otherwise...
so imagine when i moved here then to find out about holocaust etc...
that's when it got much more engaging for me to learn about WWs...
the human element within it... that's important...

I don't remember the details but i think that it was the catholic church, that opress the muslims(in spain i think) because of jealousy, and that's when the muslims started falling behind in medicine and math. Maybe you're right too, but i vaguely remember what i saw .

Malayan syllabus....i also forget liao. All i know is Parameswara flee from Indo and ended up on Melaka. Also, i think i would love to go back to England one day and visit the castles, i am pretty sure British History would be so much nicer to learn about after visiting it. Went to Warwick castle once and find the dungeons to be the most interesting. Like you said Lil, its the human element thats interesting and humans are so,so cruel....

I love the history of the first and second world wars. next to that, the history of Egypt in the time of the Pharaohs since it left marks in the own history of earth's three main monotheistic religions.

everything is history...but I find history as in european history, 10th century onwards rather interesting...that's when the world as we know it was reshaped, I'd like to think it that way. The Europeans emerged from their Dark Ages and it was an explosive era. The Chinese could have beat them to it but they became inward looking...too bad. Else the world as we know it today may be different...points to ponder:D

worth thinking huh? The Chinese had so many things going for them but lost it all because they started to think they were too good for the rest of the world....lotsa big and small lessons in between the lines.... I think history is a subject that should be taught as a philosophy, not just memorising facts and more memorising. Not much practical use then...pity.

I think also the opression of the crazy emperor also played a part(I think). Makes you wonder if the chinese would have left to progress, would they invented the Internet first??

wahhhhh, history! my second fav subject after science. cant remember the boring history lessons from sec school. but since then, i've tried to read up on world history and most interested in egyptian, roman, greek, chinese and WW2 histories. for a take of wat would happen if japanese won WW2, see the movie 2009:lost memories. for a view of the world if china has seized the day, imagine wat we could do if those books weren't burned by that stupid crazy idiot shih huang di. and i heard 1421 is the year chinese discovered america. if so, americans owe their allegiance to china! no wonder americans now so afraid of china.
Americans afraid of china is because every damn thing is made there!!!

hahahha, reminds me of a joke:
american equipments, russians equipments, all made in taiwan(china)!! <--from armargeddon
doc:do wonder it's defective, it says here "made in japan"!
kid: wat are u talking about doc? all the best things are made there. <--from back to the future
and this is the threshold of an era, an era for the rise of the asian miracle.chinese dragon is awakening, indian tigers are stirring, and the multitudes of sang kancils in the middle better watch out! muahahhaah!!

it was probably a combination of oppression + self imposed "R" gear. i was watching this documentary on ancient china and was laughing and pointing out to vin all the things that the West thought they invented that we asians knew of hundreds of years before the westerners knew what was what. i believe i said "Asia and the Middle East knew how to chart the stars while your ancestors were Pics!" ;)
but then analysis paralysis sets in, and we turn to philosophy and overthink things back to the dark ages.. :(
