Hi Andrew
So you got it done, much better than to be categorised as 'lain-lain'. Think many more would throng in, with your powers of persuasion.
Must admit I was taken aback with this message from the admin
There are rules in the forum that have been discussed thoroughly before being put in place. If you don't like them, you can email or private
message any of the admins to delete your membership.
Sounds like there's no room for suggestions.
Not time yet to talk about a better forum interface?
In a month's time, let us meet that the basketball court at the Wesley Methodist Church at Chinese New year's eve and after.

Alka,
Thank you for the welcome. Er, whose toes did I step on and how?
About forum salt, on Net credentials I am a pioneer user of the Internet in this country, having been and still involved in the setting up and administration of among others mailgroups, forums and the Registrar of Societies registered Kelab Internet Wilayah Persekutuan & Selangor housed in HELP Institute. Hobbies include stratospheric broadcasting and communications software and hardware testing.
Was in ACS Form 5 in 1980, Science, usual committees positions, graduated in the UK. No sweethearts to mention about, never a sweetheart to anybody. In occupation am still practising coz not perfect. Andrew's life story is way way more tiltilating than mine. No ambition to beat Andrew's number of posts.
Anybody had posted a list of nice Foochow restaurants in KL/PJ somewhere around?

Here it is.
For months Andrew Hong keeps telling me to register, and now I'm faced with
this hassle. I don't get this even with my UK uni alumni.
Think I should just forget about it. Just delete la.
What's next?

you sure those forums are based on free and open-source scripts?
can you provide a link please? coz they sure look like they're either a custom-built one or a heavily modded script...

Read about it and download the software from here
http://beehiveforum.sourceforge.net/about.html
Version 0.62's the latest. Read a detailed review on the earlier 0.5
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1767960,00.asp
I quite agree with the review, from both sides as user and administrator.
The forum owner is free to customise it. Moderating it is a breeze.
There is a similar interface software, also open source called MX Board but it's not as powerful.
The functions and interface are the same as the one you saw on Delphiforums and Prospero but I'm sure as a user you like the way that it immediately shows you the posts you have not read whenever you log in, whichever computer or even PDA you access it from, no more digging. Wait till you see what you can do as a mod!
For me when accessing forums, I'm very put off by the PHPBB format. It's a personal preference but the majority of forums users I know feel the same. Not to say there're none who are more passionate about PHPBB.

Dino,
That depends on the server. It is very fast on a good server - I can personally vouch for that.
The Idol forum is too full of kids with lotsa clutter, but it was the interface I want you to see.
Take a look at the other forums which use the Beehive software, from the link I provided above, and you can make the comparison and see how careful choosing of a host pays off.

yangmaen, i guess it is a matter of preference... for me, nothing beats vbulletin. the only that even comes close is invision powerboard. a distant third is phpbb.
also, please don't take offence... the format and style of the forum you posted is the 'old' way of doing things... i see that style in a lot of academic and government institutions...
btw the way, you don't have to dig for new posts... did you know that there's a 'new posts' link right in the middle of the top menu bar? :) or you can click on this link: http://www.acs-sitiawan.com/forum/search.php?do=getnew

Noted and appreciate your comments and suggestions. End of the day, its all about personal preference. I frequest sites like
www.dvdtalk.com
www.anandtech.com
so i pretty much gotten use to vbulletin type of forums.
Also another suggestion to you is that if you hit "New Posts" in the tool menu options, you can see all the new posts since your last visit.

i guess all the super major forums (really top volume ones) out there are modded and custom developed. however, for the average joe, nothing beats vbulletin... :) nothing... zilch... zero...
long live vbulletin... :)

No offence, but no, no, it's not old. And no need to flick webpages everytime.
The New Post function here doesn't land one to the next of read post, but the argument will continue till the lembu comes home.

With my fav, let's say you read post no. 1 to 20 in a thread, log off, go away, login, immediately it is post no. 21 onwards in your face for you to read.
Tried that here, clicked on New Posts, but it didn't bring me to where I stopped. It showed me only several but not all threads with new posts, clicked on them, they showed me posts from no. 1 which I've read before.

This thread is called Class Of 1980. Maybe certain words can be inserted to included those who came to ACS for their lower sixth form in 1981 and left school together with the fifth formers of 1980. Other threads are similarly affected. Having the right words to include them affects their sense of feeling being part of it.
