View Full Version : Small Town Easy To Tipu

In those days, anyone could come to Sitiawan and claimed to be anything and we all would believe him. We would be “tipu-ed” easily. You know there used to be a Methodist clinic near the present Wesley Church near Nan Hwa School. There was this Filipino man who was employed by the Methodist Mission as a medical doctor to run the clinic. Six months after working in the clinic, he turned out to be an imposter. He was actually a doctor quack.
Talking about the Methodist Clinic, there was this Korean doctor (this one was a real qualified doctor not locally but from Korea). I suppose in those days in the 60s and early 70 there was no necessity to register with the MMA. Stories went round that he was an expert at doing circumcision and if the patient so requested he could stitch the fore-skin in the form of stars round the P (reason: make your guess). Years later, when the story was retold, a student of mine came back to tell us that he did that star. Well, Zazu, TK, and Alfred 89, care to comment?
Then there was this young man who professed to be an evangelist. He came to our school (I was already a teacher then) and because of his presence the school started a week of evangelism and that man was supposed to be a main speaker. Of course he was given VIP treatment by the school. After 2 days into the week, someone found him gambling away in the SRC.

I don't how true this but some time ago, few years back, there were a group of so called promoters organising talks in Sitiawan town. Added to the attraction was gift giving ie... if you answer those almost give away questions, you will be given milo, cooking oil, etc etc. Lots of people attended those session and in between the session, they will be promoting health mattress etc etc which cost in thousands. Sadly to say that those tactics works and many, many, especially the elderly did fall into the gimmick and thus bought those mattress. Alas, the mattress only works for a while.
The worst thing is, when the promoters was back in town again, the crowd was even bigger, maybe due to the free milos...

From your description, I presume your student was a victim of the Korean doctor. If the star is causing symptom, or your student is affected by it, there maybe corrective surgery. If he prefers, he could see a specialist in Urology, or even Plastic surgeon although I am not sure which one normally deals with this type of case. :weird:

Wanna see a conman at work? go to Low Yat Plaza top floor. There is a legitimate business going on which will 'take the money out of your pocket'. It will start with a lucky draw where you will win prizes that is worth lots of money (say, Rm10K). However, there is a prerequisite for you to make a purchase of a few thousand ringgits before you can claim your big prize.
You can go there and have fun :) No need to make any purchase at the end of it. You will enjoy the showmanship of the conman...

NO, it's not stereotyping. It's legendary and known the world over, from Sibu, all the way to Fuzhou in China, like King Arthur and its sword. Guess ppl in Fuzhou are proud of this :cheesy:

They do door to door also. Once when i was in Ipoh, a young saleman came selling this gimmick. But i already encountered their tactic before so i know, lah. He let me have a lucky draw...3 or 5 stars i think...but said i can onli see the scratch and win lucky prize after making the purchase. Ok, show me the card again i said, i took it into my house...my gate was locked and he's outside of course...and scratched the card and the prize was a massage seat for car. That time the young man was already shouting and threatening to repeat police. He said i'm not allowed to do that, he will ask police to lock me up...he obviously thought i was some uneducated auntie :squeeze: .
So i dare him to report...and he changed his approach into pleading...he said he will get into trouble with his boss, will loss his job...he just refused to go away. Then it was my turn to threaten him about reporting police if he doesn't want to go away...and i called my husband who in turn called some of his neighbourhood friends to help. that finally scared the salesman away.
Hmmm...he thought he can con this sitiawan lady? Better think twice. But after that incident, i was a bit worried he might be lurking somewhere waiting for revenge. Better not do that again.

shiru,
i would agree with you to certain extend. In every community, there will be some individuals doing better then the other. Collectively, of course there are also some area where they excel better ie : hockiens - trading, cantonese - mining, hockchiews-plantation, hockchiangs-seafarer....( contoh sahaja)
and, since you mentioned it, only now I began to realise why my pocket got such a big hole after my marrriage in 1999.
cheers, brother.

My neighbour was once coned into buying fresh milk from the motorbike man. He said I ordered 5 packets from him and I wasn't around at that time. So he make my neighbour tumpang that 5 packets of milk in her fridge and paid the money. When I came home in the evening, I was surprised to see my neighbour with the milks. So i told my neighbour that she kena conned liao. My neighbour somemore say, that man was pretending to called my hubby on his cell phone  . So cleaver la that man. Worst is, my neighbour even bought extra 5 packets for her own consumption. (lol). That night, one of my other neighbour came and told us about her incident. We just laugh.
