THE name Vaness Reid may not mean much in these parts and given that not only is her chosen profession chess but she is ranked a lowly 47,694 in the world, that's hardly surprising. But this is — Vaness, a 16-year-old who hails from Sydney is making headlines around the world after leaping to the top of the rankings, but not in chess as such, but on a website which (and wait for it) rates the beauty of the world's female players. In a game not readily associated with sex appeal, the creation of the website has raised eyebrows in the chess world, with its organisers defending an attempt to sex-up chess. "If you want to promote women's chess on its own, then you have to have something like this," said Nigel Short, one of the judges for the online contest and No. 32 in the world. The people behind the competition are so serious about it they have even created their own website the work of chess-playing brothers Vladislav and Eugeny Tkachiev. "Chess desperately needs some glamour," says Vladislav, a Kazakh grandmaster. Which means he must be grateful for female competitors such as Alexandra Kosteniuk. The 21-year-old dark-haired Russian grandmaster who is ranked fifth in the world among women, models and uses her website to sell photos of herself posing in bikinis next to giant chess pieces. Another, Maria Manakova, 31, Russia's fourth-ranked woman (and eighth on the beauty contest site), attracted attention last year when she posed nude for Speed, a Russian magazine. She followed it up by appearing in Maxim and the Russian edition of Playboy.
