Eh.. I dunno about VC.. but I do not have a DSLR.. I wish.
However, DLSRs are difficult to maintain, especially the lenses. You would have to keep them dry. Otherwise... fungus growth will destroy your lenses. I previously had a film SLR. Din take much care, 1 year later, one of my lenses.. koyaked. Also, lenses are expensive. The standard kit lense will not do justice to your pics. So if you are a casual photographer, better get a prosumer camera. Eg. Canon Powershot G6 or even the Pro1.
Anyways, for starters, both the D70s and the 350D are very good choices. Personally, I prefer the Canon (because have been using Canon since I first started .. hehe) but the D70s has got more functions... and it is bigger, which equals better grip. However, both these DLSRs are made mostly of plastic.
If you do not mind, a used camera is a good choice. Even the D60 or 10D are very good choices. Can get a used set (body only) for about RM3K or less. Or if you are tight ($$$) then a used D70 or 300D not bad also mar. Most of them come in kit form for about RM2K+

i agree with kamkuey. having an SLR is a big responsibility. Lotsa car is needed. Dad has an old SLR. We used to keep in in an air-tight container and in it, as many silica gel we can get our hands on to keep it really dry inside!!

Leslie, if you are serious about selling the camera, may I suggest that you post in Members Exchange with the condition of the camera, peripherals that comes with it and the price you have in mind.
You may be able to sell it off, if THE PRICE IS RIGHT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Price_is_Right)!! :)

Basically, I agree with Kamkuey as to his comments above.
Unless, you use you camera so often & need special quality for your photos, there no need to have a dSLR. I take a lot of photos every months, I am using a prosumer.
Leslie, can you PM as to the camera you intent to sell. I may want to take a look.

SLR are fun to have and play with it. Used to have one. Hwvr, trying to maintain it is another matter all together. I stopped using mine for a while and the auto focus got jammed. A friend from Kodak took a look at it in his lab and discovered the mechanism is jam and have to replace it. Cannot repair. :sad-2:

I guess one fundamental rule about SLR camera is to be selfish. Never let it out of sight.

Anyway.. leslie.. to answer your Q...
Beginner - Canon 350D
Non-Beginner - Canon 20D
Pro - Canon 1Ds MarkII
Sorry ar.. I am more well versed with Canon.
But bear in mind, that these three, given to one person, using the same lense, taking the same scene, will produce an almost identical pic (not considering the pixel count). The differences between the three are :
1) Built quality. (EOS350D is plastic)
2) Speed
3) Pixel count
4) sensor size (1Ds MarkII has a full size sensor while the rest are.. erm.. 2/3 .. I think)
5) Weather resistence. (1Ds MarkII is weather sealed)
6) Size and weight (1Ds MarkII weighs a tonne!!)
Actually... about 1.6kgs
