View Full Version : The 20 healthiest foods you can eat
What do oats, oranges and oysters have in common? They're all superfoods and we need them for optimum health......
This is one of the few fruits that contain fat but it's the good unsaturated kind that helps us absorb the vitamin E in avocados. Half an avocado gives you almost 50 per cent of the recommended dietary intake (RDI) of vitamin E. As a bonus, you also get a good source of vitamin B6 and pantothenic acid (another B vitamin).
My tip: use ripe avocado in place of butter or margarine when spreading bread for sandwich

Sabun muka lah.
Half a punnet of most types of berries provides a full day's supply of vitamin C and the tiny seeds in berries are an excellent source of fibre. Berries also contain vitamin E (esp blackberries and blueberries) and folate. But their greatest claim to fame is their high level of antioxidants, which help cells throughout the body stay youthful.
Tip: add a few strawberries or blueberries to your cereal with yoghurt or milk.
Sabun muka lah.

hmm... avocado recipe... i do have a favourite - avocado with young leave salads...
need : avocado, baby spinach, baby rockets
dressing : olive oil, ground salt and pepper, lime juice....
i just toss everything and agak agak to my taste...
discover this when i had to use up the stuffs in fridge one day...
and just play around with whatever i had in kitchen at that time....
guacamole recipe
- 1-2 ripe avocados
- lemon
- chilli peppers (usually jalapenos, but use whatever you like lah)
- garlic
- salt
first you dice the avocados. lemon zest + squeeze the lemon juice all over the avocadoes. mince chilli peppers and throw in. then make a paste out of the garlic and the salt, and put in. then just mash everything with a fork.
typically used as dip for chips, etc.
you can add diced tomatoes if you like, in that case, do not mash and it becomes more like a salsa rather than guacamole.
hmm avocado..... can it be eaten raw?
How does it taste like???
I remember a long time back when one of my friends got his first pay check.
We met at the supermarket with anor friend.... So since he's feeling rich, we decided to get the most expensive fruit in the market.
Avocado at that time was selling at RM6.00 per fruit. So at that price the fruit must be very nice to eat.....
We tried the flesh.... it tasted like ?sawdust.... tasteless and "siap"??. One of us thought we should try the pit.... not edible.... skin.... not edible..... in the end..... one big mess and RM6.00 gone.
So, question:
1. How to choose an avocado?
2. Do you eat it raw?
3. Must wait till ripe ah?

chicken waldorf salad makes a wholesome lunch:
celery, roughly chopped
granny smith, cored and cubed
dried sultanas
steamed lean chicken fillet, cooled before adding to salad
mayonaise
drizzle of lemon juice
drizzle of olive oil
toss nicely
ok, so far featured in this list --> avocado, celery

in this list:
1. avocado
2. berries
(psst - u got a homous recipe meh? can share or not? it is another health food, according to dakota fanning in war of the worlds :D )
OYSTERS
Casanova ate dozens of these potent bivalves but their reputation as an aphrodisiac may have come less from the way they slide seductively down the throat and more from their zinc content. A dozen oysters have about 10 times as much zinc as a good-sized steak. Oysters also have iron and iodine. And most importantly, all this for very few kilojoules.
Tip: A fresh oyster is fat and shiny with clear liquid in the shell. Creamy liquid indicates the oyster is spawning, which adversely affects its flavour.
no4: Rosemary
The flavour of components of herbs are often antioxidants that contribute to health and rosemary TOPS the list for its antioxidant content. Some of the dozens of potent compounds found in rosemary stop blood cells clumping together to form clots and so benefit the heart. Carnosol, another constituent of the herb of remembrance, is a phenolic diterpene, which has antioxidant and anti-cancer properties.
Tip: If u like a mean bbq, use fresh rosemary w ur bbq meat to counteract carcinogenic substances that form when it's char-grilled.
The "stinking rose" helps control blood pressure and cholesterol and may also reduce the risk of cancer. Its benefits come from sulphur compounds. When crushed, garlic releases an enzyme that converts an odourless compound called alliin into allicin, which produces the familiar aroma of garlic.
Tip: The flesh of roasted garlic, squeezed from its peel, is a breath-friendlier option than fried.
(now i don't feel as guilty abt my garlic breath anymore)
6. ASIAN GREENS
They have no fat and lots of fibre plus vitamin C, beta carotene (which the body converts to vitamin A), folate (vital in the earliest stages of pregnancy) and many antioxidants. And most asian greens are low in oxalic acid, which ties up the iron in vegies such as spinach. Chrysanthemum leaves, mustard cabbage, tatsoi and chinese broccoli (kailan) are also good sources of calcium.
Tip: The greener the leaves the higher the antioxidant levels.
(btw, does anyone know what tatsoi is? )

i actually love rosemary. it's soooo fragrant and yummy. i make Rosemary Focaccia bread, roasted whole chicken with a herb rub (rosemary, sage, thyme), also for no good reason i toss it chopped up to brighten up my pasta dishes. just a change from parsley lah.
thanksgiving turkey last year i also made with rosemary herb rub inside and outside the turkey. i've thrown it in with beef roasts as well. it's all good. :D

Tomatoes
The deeper the colour and the more pronounced the flavour of tomatoes, the higher their content of lycopene. This antioxidant from the carotenoid family is good news for men bcos it helps preserve the health of the prostate. It's absorbed best from tomatoes cooked in a little olive oil.
Tip: Add finely chopped rosemary to your tomato pasta sauce and get a double whammy of benefits.
(sounds like sila has read this article b4!) i also read that cooking does not destroy the benefits of lycopene, so for those who can't eat tomato raw, cook it well!
i often pack cherry or grape tomatoes for our morning snack

NUTS
Few foods can rival nuts for nutrition (protein, fibre, iron, zinc, calcium, vit E, seven of the eight B-complex vitamins) but they're often rejected because they're high in fat. However, nuts provide us with essential fatty acids that are needed by the brain and nervous system. At least 16 studies on nuts have shown they lower blood cholesterol and no study reported any weight gain among participants who ate 30-50 grams of nuts a day. Nuts are also rich in arginine, an amino acid that improves heart health.
Tip: Toast nuts in a dry frying pan for extra flavour.
try rubbing rosemary, garlic, sea-salt and splash of olive oil on frenched lamb cutlets and grill till sizzling

maybe you can explain to me more....lotsa cook books uses this....wat's the difference wif the normal salt that we use??
Sea Salt
Other Names: Sal Del Mar, Sel De Mer, Sale Marino
Sea salt is a broad term that generally refers to unrefined salt derived directly from a living ocean or sea. It is harvested through channeling ocean water into large clay trays and allowing the sun and wind to evaporate it naturally. Manufacturers of sea salt typically do not refine sea salt as much as other kinds of salt, so it still contains traces of other minerals, including iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium, manganese, zinc and iodine. Proponents of sea salt rave about its bright, pure, clean flavor, and about the subtleties lent to it by these other trace minerals. Some of the most common sources for sea salt include the Mediterranean Sea, the North Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean (particularly in France, on the coast of Brittany). Sea salt is thought to be healthier and more flavorful that traditional table salt. Available in coarse, fine & extra fine grain size.
Table Salt
Table salt is the most common kind of salt found in the average kitchen. It usually comes from salt mines and once it's mined, it is refined and most minerals are removed from it until it is pure sodium chloride. Most table salt is available either plain or iodized. American salt manufacturers began iodizing salt in the 1920's, in cooperation with the government, after people in some parts of the country were found to be suffering from goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland caused by an easily-preventable iodine deficiency. People require less than 225 micrograms of iodine a day. Seafood as well as sea salt contains iodine naturally and the supplement is unnecessary if there are sufficient quantities of either in one's diet. Note: Natural sea salt is a healthy replacement for ordinary table salt.

This green vegie is a powerhouse of protective nutrients, with a formidable array of vitamins (C,E, folate and beta carotene), minerals (potassium and iron) and dietary fibre. It also contains sulphoraphane, which has been identified as providing protection against cancer. Brussel sprouts, cabbage and turnips also contain sulphoraphane but reluctant vegetable eaters probably prefer broccoli.
Tip: For maximum nutrients, steam or stir-fry broccoli or microwave it without water (as opposed to boiling or blanching it, thereby pouring out the nutrients with the water)
now i understand why i don't like the taste of broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage and turnips - i think they stink but i still can tahan swallowing broccoli and cabbage

OATS
When the Scots ate porridge, their rates of heart disease were low. As consumption of oats fell last century, heart disease rates in Scotland rose dramatically. Oats are especially valuable for their soluble fibre - the gluey stuff in cooked oats. Soluble fibre is digested in the large intestine by good bacteria, which multiply in the process and produce butyric acid. This short-chain fatty acid provides direct nourishment to the cells in the bowel, helping them resist attack by carcinogenic (cancer-causing) substances.
Tip: Soak regular oats overnight and they'll cook quickly next morning

a good way to consume nuts in a moderate and regular way is to sprinkle either cashews or slivered almonds on say, a stir fried chicken or beef or mixed vege dish as powerpacked garnish
ORANGES
Of 32 studies using vit C supplements, only one found any advantage for colds - and then, only half a day's reduction in symptoms. By contrast, an orange gives u protection from invading bugs bcos its vit C works in synergy with beta carotene and nature's extensive range of protective bioflavonoids.
Tip: Eat the orange rather than just drinking the juice and you also get the benefits of its fibre
Extra virgin Olive oil
Olive oil is good for your cholesterol but extra virgin olive oil (EVO) does even more, with studies confirming it helps reduce blood pressure and prevent blood clots. The extra benefits of EVO come from its 35 or so antioxidants - other vegetable oils can't compete on this score. Best of all, if EVO is your usual fat, it provides residual protection against blood thickening when you have an occasional splurge.
Tip: Freshly harvested oils have the highest level of antioxidants. Check the label for the date.

i just wrote a long post with my lamb kari recipe but then my stupid laptop froze after i clicked on "submit reply" :( so i will rewrite the recipe later. sorry hon...
Many studies show that wholegrains reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. And while this protection is partly due to their fibre, the nutrients they contain are also important. Wheatgerm - which contains vit E, most of the B complex (esp folate), iron, zinc, manganese, magnesium, potassium and essential fatty acids - is hard to beat.
Tip: Sprinkle wheatgerm on cereal, add it to smoothies or mix it with grated cheese, sprinkle over vegetables and bake for three to four mins.
Honestly I'd pick the fare on sunday kopitiam over this one anyday!!

What do oats, oranges and oysters have in common? They're all superfoods and we need them for optimum health......
We also need zinc for Men's health and as tolerance factor to glucose. Good luck!

(how to say ur name again ah?)
d---b---s--- lah! :p
why all this gwai-lo food leh? Can't you have local food like petai for instance.... can make it into top 20 ah??
MUESLI
The combination of oats, wheatgerm, seeds (sunflower, sesame and pumpkin), dried fruits and nuts provides protein, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and dietary fibre. Muesli is slowly digested and so provides long-lasting energy.
ie good for maintaining weight
Tip: Buy natural muesli or make your own to avoid the fatty toasted varieties
CHICKPEAS (or was it horsepeas?) :p
Ask a nutritionist to design the perfect food and they would probably come up with a chickpea. These legumes provide protein, essential fatty acids and fibre, plus vitamin E and most of the B complex (except B12), iron, zinc and calcium. You can even sprout them to get vitamin C. The carbohydrate in chickpeas is digested slowly so they're filling and ideal for those with diabetes. While healthy bacteria in the bowel are digesting chickpea fibre, they do produce gases but these are medically harmless and it's a sure sign you're making anti-cancer compounds.
Tip: Tinned or vacuum-packed chickpeas save time
(i don't think it was kacang anak ayam tho?!?)

i supposed for most food lovers, there's tendency to try in variety...
experimenting with cooking, you get more conscious of what you eat...
Superfood no 16
Omega-3 fatty acids are found in all seafood but salmon is one of the best sources. The essential fats help prevent inflammation in the arteries, skin and joints. Salmon is also an excellent source of iodine, often in low supply in many areas of Australia. Two servings of seafood a week will meet our omega-3 and iodine needs.
Tip: If u cook salmon steaks do them quickly - two minutes on each side - so they stay moist and flavoursome
(i say two trips to sushi train will suffice) :D

if you eat cooked salmon make it quick or it's extremely fishy...
try to get wild salmon rather than farm salmon if you can...
and eating raw with lemon, or smoked salmon (imho) tastes much better than cooked...

yeah i agree fully
but when i do make grilled salmon steak, i use a paste of freshly mashed garlic seasoned in sea-salt and chopped parsley soaking in EVO oil, then spread it on top of the salmon. after grilling squeeze lemon generously over it. not so fishy and makes a helluva healthy meal over raw baby spinach leaves..... no need to wash wok and can watch news when dinner is cooking haha
A luscious mango has an impressive array of nutrients - one day's supply of vitamin A (from the conversion of its beta carotene) and almost two days worth of vitamin C, plus folate and fibre. As a bonus Indian studies have found mangoes contain beneficial phenolic acids, which act as antioxidants.
Tip: Wait until mangoes are in season as that is when their antioxidant content is at its peak.
well i dont want to wait cos its my fave fruit (besides lychees and watermelon) and shall eat it all season long....... any mango sorbet recipe?

The inhabitants of Okinawa, a chain of Japanese islands, have the world's longest life expectancy and rarely get heart disease, osteoporosis, dementia, diabetes or cancers of the breast, bowel or prostate. Their diet of rice, fish, fruits and vegetables includes two daily servings of tofu or tempeh. As well as supplying protein, vitamins from the B complex, potassium, iron and calcium, tofu is also a source of isoflavones, which have a proven role in reducing heart disease and may also protect against some cancers.
Tip: For high calcium, look for tofu that is coagulated with a calcium salt.

YOGHURT
The good bacteria in yoghurt partially digest the lactose in milk, making yoghurt a suitable source of calcium for those who are lactose intolerant. Some types of bacteria take up residence in the large intestine, where they may help prevent food-poisoning bacteria or cancer cells getting a toehold. Look for "contains living bacteria" on the label.
Tip: Add fresh fruit to natural yoghurt or sprinkle nuts or cereal on top for a power breakfast.
(a doctor friend says that after taking a course of antibiotics our immune system is weak and can be replenished by the good bacteria in yoghurt, dunno if this is accurate...... doctors' verification?)
