1031 (Dow Jones) KLCI +0.6% to 910.92, supported by strong gains in Nestle +3% at MYR24, MISC +2.8% at MYR14.70, Maybank +1.8% at MYR11.60. But thin volume traded suggest gains may not be sustainable, says trader. "Some local funds are supporting these stock prices ahead of book closure," he notes, while marginal gains in broad range of index-linked issues spilling over to some lower liners. "This may prevent a retest of the 900 psychological support but the KLCI is likely to close at the lower end of 904-912 band ahead of the weekend," he adds. (VGB)

DJ MARKET TALK/KL:Proton +0.5%; Post-AFTA Prices Not Cheaper

1144 (Dow Jones) Proton (5304) +0.5% at MYR9.40 on thin 52,000 shares, gets mild boost from International Trade and Industry Minister Rafidah Aziz's comment car prices will not come down next year despite commitment to AFTA. "The Government will institute other measures such as excise duty to offset the revenue loss," she says; under AFTA, motor vehicle tariffs will be cut to 0-5% by 2006. "The comments suggest Proton will still have a pricing advantage over its competitors in the local market and that support firm sales growth," says local analyst. (VGB)
