my sentiment is dat the price will drop esp on the CKD in ASEAN countries but not drastically but over a period of time. I think 5 to 10% reduction would be expected......btw, wat car r u considering?

nice car but still pricey and i think it is a CBU, so might not be affected by the afta thingy....
Hv u seen the Ford Escape 2.3l - around RM140k. CBU with sun roof n leather seat. My fav 4WD is Freelander 2.5l

freelander? too expensive for me lah.
sorento not much more expensive compare to escape - but much nicer and bigger... problem is the 2.5 l is a diesel - the 3.0 petrol is > 200K. not within my budget - maybe for people like fulat and buffy...

The Sorento is based on the Toyota Harrier/Lexus RX. Not a bad thing going. Not familiar with the price thought. What about the Rexton which is retailing at RM160K+? Diesel is not a bad thing. I would not mind driving a diesel powered 4WD around.

I personally don like the look...not too sure of the performance. I think both the prices for Sorento & Rexton are comparable.... around RM160k.....
Any views on normal sedan cars.....Civic, Sentra, Altis, Accord,Camry.....no need to talk abt BMW & Mercs...can't afford them

hey...tw....dat is not a view, dat is jus a general comment....
no point buying (sedan) now, as it's already year end. lots of rumours that new models will be introduced.... btw, anyone checked out peugeot 407? looks like a ferrari from some angles...
but if u r thinking of 4 wheel drive such as x-trail, crv, etc, best get it this year. .. there are rumours in the market that gomen will increase the tax rates on these vehicles. current tariff taxes sedans more than 4wd...
caveat emptor: i will not be held responsible if u decide to buy / postpone buying and suffer financially as a result :p

My thoughts:-
1) Korean cars are all CBU (I believe) and Korea is not part of AFTA, therefore, the price might go up because deduction of 1 duty will be off set by the increase of other duties.
2) I dont like Korean Cars, only Korean gals.
3) why a Sorento?
4) If I were to choose between a Diesel or petrol unit, I would go for Diesel. Diesel technology has gone a long way and is infact more efficient than petrol. The engine is also not as noisy as the older type. In Europe, Diesel is the more popular choise now. Infact, maintenance is also cheaper and Diesel is only half the price of Petrol and 1L of Diesel can take you further than 1L of petrol. The only draw back is higher road tax but the savings on maintenance and fuel will be more significant.
5) Why an Escape?
6) considered X-trail, CRV Rexton (Korean Merc) or even X3?
7) Why a 4 wheel drive? You live in Jungle?

5) Why an Escape?
Fulat, is there anything wrong with Escape?
Its 2.3l at RM140k, similar to CRV and Xtrail.
The only prob I forsee is the resale value...being a Ford....

agree with fulat - diesel the way to go.... problem in m'sia:road tax double and not sure if gomen will continue to subsidise diesel... diesel fuel is the same price as petrol in europe. people buy diesels coz' of much better mileage and also generally lower maintenance costs (in theory)... check out my avatar - twice turbo diesel - 270+ bhp and 500 nm of torque - same as M5!!
btw, fulat, i think kl is like a jungle.. really - with all the kancils around
:D

DJ MALAYSIA PRESS: Min: Don't Expect Cheaper Cars In Jan '05
KUALA LUMPUR (Dow Jones)--International Trade & Industry Minister Rafidah Aziz said car prices are unlikely to be lower in January when Malaysia cuts import taxes under the Asean Free Trade Area agreement, according to the daily New Straits Times.
On Jan. 1, 2005, import duties will be cut to 20% for cars from the Association of South East Asian nations, and further reduced to between 0% and 5% in 2006, Rafidah said. Previously, officials said Malaysia will cut import duties further to between 0% and 5% only in 2008.
Rafidah said the government will offset the revenue loss from the cuts by raising excise duties.
"Don't expect the prices of vehicles to go down," she said.

No offence to Escape owners but the design a bit dated leh. Anyway, their engine also a bit crap. they need a 2.3L to give it enuff juice to really have fun. Anyway, for me, if got budget, go for the new Harrier. very nice car. Sound system also damn good. New defination for a P*ssy Chaser!!

What else is new? this year when they cut import tax, all the other taxes went up and our cars actually became mroe expensive, even those cars manufactured around the ASEAN region or assembled locally. Very [EDIT] man staying in this country.
Guys, splitted the thread on Fulat being single... It is also under General Chat... Let's maintain topic on AFTA, okie dokie :D
