wah, just on the news... a shop in new york accidentally put harry potter on display and was bought... but then the 9 years old who bought it brought it back after reading a few pages, feeling guilty from having it earlier than everyone else wor... if it's me, i'll finish reading all the way already lor! :p

BERLIN - Pope Benedict believes the Harry Potter books subtly seduce young readers and 'distort Christianity in the soul' before it can develop properly, according to comments attributed to him by a German writer.

Gabriele Kuby, who has written a book called Harry Potter - Good Or Evil, which attacks J.K. Rowling's best-selling series about the boy wizard, published extracts from two letters written to her by Benedict in 2003, when he was a cardinal.

Kuby, a devout Catholic, had sent him a copy of her Potter critique and he wrote to thank her, according to a passage from one of the letters in German on her website.


'It is good that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because these are subtle seductions which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly,' Benedict wrote, according to the excerpt.

A Vatican official was not able to comment on the remarks attributed to Benedict, who is currently on holiday in the Alps. Reuters was unable to reach Kuby by telephone.

The sixth book in the series, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, will be released tomorrow, with millions of copies already shipped to stores around the world.

After Benedict was named Pope in April, his own writings shot to the top of the German book charts and dislodged the most recent book in the Potter series from No. 1.

The Vatican had previously appeared to approve of the books, saying they helped children to understand the difference between good and evil.

Kuby maintains the opposite, listing among 10 arguments against Potter: 'The ability of the reader to distinguish between good and evil is overridden by emotional manipulation and intellectual obfuscation.'

In one of the letters, Benedict gives Kuby permission to publicise his opinion.

'Somehow your letter got buried in the large pile of name-day, birthday and Easter mail,' he writes.

'Finally this pile is taken care of, so that I can gladly allow you to refer to my judgment about Harry Potter.' -- Reuters

well, know of Christians who approve the books as mere fiction. non-threatening ....but do acknowledge that there are conflicting views...anyway, hopefully the critics actually read the books prior to putting their criticisms / views on paper etc

hi, sorry for the late reply...anyway, no, didn't take part. ...went to mph, only a handful of people. that was about 7.05a.m....after that, checked out kinokuniya. wow ! the music from the soundtrack was blasting away, fans everywhere, the deco, free wands...in other words, the atmosphere ..bravo !!!!

by the way, so far, this 6th book seems to be better than previous one :D

the fourth movie "the goblet of fire" will be out soon. hopefully they will be faithful to the book...have you read it ? i think it's the best so far (not taking into consideration the 6th yet...haven't finish reading he he he)

I did not watch the 1 and 2nd chapter. Only the 3rd one and I can say that it's a good movie. So tell myself that I'm going to missed any of them.

(FYI, christians are against this movie. LOTR also. Don't ask me why.) :(

the 3rd one was better than the 1st 2 (IMHO). i'm actually quite anxious about the 4th. all the action etc

the 6th book is good (i've finished) but it's much darker than the 5th...
and with the whole disapproval for christians to read harry potter...
there are lots of contradiction about it... too much conspiracy theory ah..?
the last pope praised it, the new pope condemned it...
