Does the stars have the answers to everything?? Feng Shui...Vasthu Sastra....Astology...Numerology...Old wive's tale....and the list is endless.

Juz interested to know how many of u out there are die-hard believers/sceptics/so-so/undecided when it comes to superstitious believes.

As for myself...used to be a sceptic, but along the way...i have now come 2 believe there's a certain amount of influence in our life (all those serendipitous, unexplainable, out of our influence happenings in our life) maybe like 65-35 ;)

I'm not the next Lilian Too...but the extent of how a fren was affected by the fact that her 2nd toe was longer than her big-toe made me wonder wat other believes are out there...so, people do share-share yea... :)

***Lavanya going to look for her crystal ball now***

Ok...me start d ball rolling now yea...hope to see many more follow suit

Indians have this believe that if a gal has 2nd toe which is longer than the big toe...she (wife) will be the dominant figure in the family...if its shorter vice-versa, and if equal arr...then 50-50 lar *ladies check-check toe length??* hehehe....

i was told that the chinese have some believe associated with the same toe matter too...but my fren couldnt recall what it is...any1 knows??

lavanya, my 2nd toe is also longer than my 1st toe. How ah? What's your intepretation of that?

I don't believe in superstitions, horroscopes and many more. However, I believe in some of the old chinese believes, which were passed down from our great grandparents. Examples as below.

1. When you kena chicken pox, you are not allowed to eat anything related to beans such as soya bean, soya milk, taugeh, groundnuts,... (when you grow old, you will know the effect)
2. Do not take shower late at night. You may wipe yourself dry but the bones are still wet. Huh?

I also believe in feng shui to a certain extend. I believe feng shui does not fall from the sky, they are derived with scientific reasons behind them. I also believe in the 5 elements of nature (fire, water, wood, earth and metal).

Let me highlight a few feng shui teachings that I believe.

1. For love, do not hang your single picture in your room. You will not get to fall in love easily (because you keep admiring yourself mah). Picture of a group is okay.
2. Do not have any living things (things with life) in your room such as fish, flowers (fresh or dead). They attract negative elements to you.
3. Do not put your shoes and slippers right in front of your doorstep, they prevent the yin energy from coming into your house. To me, simple. When the wind blows, the bad smell will come into your house, that's it.
4. Do not place your wok directly under the toilet (upstairs).
5. In workplace, you should have a solid wall behind you.
6. When building your own house, it is good to have mountains behind your house (far also nevermind).
7. Keep a fountain in your garden, they attract positive elements and give you peace of mind when you see the water flowing freely.
8. Your bed should not face the door of the room. It is against the yin-yang energy.

Please note some of the things I mentioned may not be true hor. I simply tambah one lah.

Haha, that's why I ask you mah. Nevermind, I don't believe that anyway.

As for plastic flowers, they are lifeless to begin with. So, no problem with those.

I only tambah a little bit ajinomoto. Most of them are true version, just that I use my own words nia.

i don't follow any old rules unless they make sense, like some of the ones my parents told me like - don't leave anything on the car roof or else you might forget and drive off. i've done that so many times!

i think my lack of respect for old rules started when i was young. my grandma took me to a chinese temple when i was about 5 and i got so bored i pissed outside on one of the buddha statues!

i'm neither a sceptic nor a believer... anything that make sense goes...
although sometimes, i don't know why, these old ways are comforting...
reminiscing of the times my greatgrandparents would tell me what not to do etc...
and they told me these because they cared for me, and that's what matter...

actually yea...if u look at those BELIEFS...most of them might have hidden reasons!

Like my parents would scold if i cut fingernails at night...suposed 2 be bad luck or sumthing...i tink they oso duno d reason! but logically...those days no electricity...so ppl takut ter-cut skin...nowdays wif proper lighting, shud be ok gua...marning or nite doesnt matter i think...as long as u keep ur eyes open when u r snipping ur nails! :cheesy:

me, no, i'm pretty respectful for old ways...
i was very close to my greatgrandma and she was devout buddhist...
so i'd always went to temple with her, and i enjoyed learning the customs...
i still have a fascination for customs, for any religion or any race... not just chinese... :)

Precisely, same thinking, lavanya. My point is, these old believes have reasons behind them.

i guess modern day ppl like us all mostly accept things that has a logic & can be reasoned out :)

i too share fascination for culture & beliefs (even if dun make sense)..its kindof an eye-opener...coz when u try 2 know ppl's beliefs, u'd naturally get 2 understand them better, rite??

tatz y i tink they say...the more u travel & see...d more u gain & understand in life, besides being more open minded

HM... this is interesting. But I don't believe it. Everything I do, i am just more aware of the logics behind rather than believing every single thing my grandma pass on to me.

One of the supersitions my grandma passed to my mum and my mum to me is never sweep someone's feet with a broom, else bad luck will befall that person?? What a @#$*?

There's no good and logical reasoning to that. Without any reasoning, I will not resign myself to believe it...

Chinese believe that you should not sweep your floor on the 1st day of CNY. If you do, you are actually sweeping all the wealth away from your house. I never believe that.

Anyway, I hate to sweep floor lah but everytime kena forced by my mum. :p

I personally don't buy into this superstition stuff... i break all the rules all the time and nothing happens to me, ever....

Touchwood!!!

Sarah

yea yea, im never allowed to sweep the floor on the 1st day... i guess, that's the belief laa... so, its been few years since we last swept the floor on the 1st day, but our "wealth" doesnt seem to increase also?? cheh...

oh btw, don't use broom to sweep the floor laa. Nowadays, ppl use vacuum-cleaner. If u have kids arounds, its really good becuz sweeping with a broom, actually allows dust to stay in the air before settling themselves back on the wall/shelves/etc.

So, i strongly suggest use vacuum-cleaner at home to clean the floor.

what bout tis explanation, Art...consider it yea >> Broom is kindof dirty...coz u sweep all d dirt rite...so, if u shud sweep someone's feet, u r actually dirtying their feet lo...i tink tatz kindof disrespectful oso.
How...logic rite?

Sarah
04-25-2005, 08:53 PM
well.. i don't think dust is all that dirty ... at least its not deadly. I just hate the way ancient ppl make up the consequences of doing so. But yeah, all these supersitions actually arise from some reasoning behind. But i don't believe with the consequences they made up.

Lava Gal
04-25-2005, 09:02 PM
agree...mostly have reasons..but instead they made up silly 'consequences'/stories...wic'z juz 2 scare ppl

tatz where we new generation can make a difference..take d good & logical ones...adapt to our modern day living & the bad ones...*chuckle chuckle* discard it :amused: sshh....dun tell d grandmas tat i said these yea..they'd come after me wif a broom then!
